Critical Threat by Lynette Eason is book 3 in the Extreme Measures series, but each book can easily be read as a stand-a-lone. I really liked the first story in this series, Life Flight. It is exactly what I like in a thriller, romance plus nail biting scenes that kept me on the edge of my seat.
I was hoping that Critical Threat would have that same feel to it. Sadly, for me, it did not. I didn't connect with either of the main characters as they both seemed a little one note. There was very little romance, and a lack of chemistry, which really took me out of the story. I also felt like the plot went in too many different directions and seemed very unrealistic.
While this one did not work for me, I am sure I am in the minority. I do highly recommend the first book in this series, Life Flight, and I'm looking forward to the next story in this series, Countdown, which releases in August.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own. The faith thread was light.
Don't you wonder how information gets in and out of prisons? Especially when these prisoners are in confinement....restricted access to visitors....every move watched. This case is very interesting. How can there be a copycat when certain details aren't released? How would you feel if you were related to one of these horrible people? Lots of things to think about in this book!
This is another good inspirational romantic suspense from Eason. Though it is part of a series, each novel focuses on a particular character so it reads really well on its own.
The plot is good as Grace, a behavioral scientist, attempts to create a profile of a gruesome serial killer. She is hampered by drama in her own family. She partners in her work with a man who is also of potential romantic interest.
The killer targets Grace and that provides for some suspense. Even after an attack, Grace manages to wander on her own and, of course, another attack. It irritates me when suspense is generated by lack of due diligence by agents. I was happy to see that the final suspense was generated because the killer outwitted agents.
I liked this novel. I liked Grace, even if she was too assured of her own abilities and got herself into trouble. Sam, the prison psychiatrist, is a suitable fellow with whom to work to uncover the killer. Both come from families with troubles and their family drama balances out the intensity of the FBI investigative work. The resolution was not such a surprise as astute readers will have figured out much of it by the end.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
This was a highly anticipated read for me! I am always ready to dive into another Lynette Eason thriller, and this series has been a good one. While this book delivered some moments of suspense and surprise, overall I wasn’t as drawn to the main characters as I would have hoped. They both felt a little lacking in energy and personality and their romance was sudden and lacked any sparks. My theory about who the serial killer was was formed in the first 25% of the book and I was right! It was still interesting to see how it all played out and watch the pieces fall into place to solve the case. I loved the elements of surprise that happened in this story, as there were several face to face encounters with the serial killer that provided danger and suspense. I did feel like we got too much of both Sam and Grace’s personal lives and it kind of took me out of the story at times. We waffled between their home lives and work lives and it seemed like they both at time’s prioritized their work over their family and that made it hard for me to really like either of them. I did enjoy the actual suspense in this story and the serial killer aspect was definitely intriguing and kept me coming back to this story. The conclusion was packed with danger and a few twists, but I won’t spoil anything!
What a great pounding book! I loved the Lynette creates her characters and keeps the book so interesting you just can't put it down! The developing love between Grace and Sam as they fought together to bring down a serial killer have the book some much needed brevity. I cannot wait to read the next book!
Critical Threat is a suspense novel written by Lynette Eason. It is book three in the Extreme Measures series, but it is not necessary to have read the previous books in order to read this one.
Summary: FBI Special Agent Grace Billingsley notices things no one else does. It’s what makes her good at her job, but also attracts the attention of an obsessed serial killer. Now it’s a race against time to catch a killer-before he catches her.
My Thoughts: This book was pretty good. There is plenty of action, the beginnings of a good romance, and a mystery that keeps you the reader guessing.
I liked that the main male character was a single dad, and the book showed the relationships he had with his kids and ex-mother-in-law. It added a lot to the story.
I would say I enjoyed it, it was a quick and easy read, but I wouldn’t necessarily read it again. Maybe because the topic (serial killers) was a little darker than my typical read? I’m not quite sure.
I would like to thank Revell though, for providing me with a free digital copy of this book in exchange for my review. Thank you.
I always enjoy Lynette Eason’s books. They combine romance with suspense and keeps you wondering who is involved and how it all ties together. Critical Threat combines all of them in an exciting blend to keep you on your toes. This book intrigued me as it deals with serial killers, those in jail already, one on the loose, and the son of one as the protagonist. It gave it a different dynamic than other books I’ve read and I believe was done in an excellent way that brought depth to the story without being too blasé about it.
This compelling thriller blasts off with intense suspense as we’re introduced to a dangerous serial murderer on the loose. The book includes several intriguing story threads wrapped up in this mystery novel. The author did a good job handling all the plot threads and creating realistic characters to people the exciting action. It kept me racing to the conclusion. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own. #CriticalThreat #NetGalley
My thoughts: This is a fast-paced thriller which holds ones interest even though it is a bit on the creepy side. Ms. Eason is a stellar writer who knows how to engage the reader. The hits just keep coming and the reader is kept guessing who-dun-it and more. it becomes personal when Grace becomes the focus of the killer. If you love romantic suspense you will want to read CRITICAL THREAT or any of the other books in this series. I was given a copy free and all opinions re my own.
I had to make a rule for myself with this book. No reading it at night! haha. I'm such a lightweight when it comes suspense- especially serial killer suspense books. This one really kept up with the creepy factor until the very end. It was suspenseful and had great forward momentum. The ending felt so satisfying. So, so satisfying.
Grace and Sam have a growing friendship that turns into more throughout this book. They have complicated, difficult pasts that they still deal with which actually made them even more suited for each other than they (or I) initially believed. They worked together well.
I'm really enjoying this series! It's exciting and gets my blood pumping without crossing my lines of becoming too gruesome or violent. I can't wait for the next book. Is there a next book?! I really hope so!
Content: peril, death. Mild violence. Kissing. Some Christian elements.

This is such a good book! Lots of action, suspense and romance with characters that really pull you in! I have found that I very much enjoy Lynette Eason's books. They have a little bit of everything and are very well rounded. They keep you wanting more! :)
I don't give many 5 star ratings, but I feel like this one deserves it!
From the opening pages this was a wild ride story with what seemed like but wasn't quite a copycat serial killer. Throughout the story the author dropped very subtle clues that if you pay close enough attention you might pick up on. Me? I was too busy enjoying the story and missed some key clues.
If you read earlier books in this series you've met Grace, but in this book she takes center stage and is fabulous! She is smart and strong, but she isn't afraid to show fear when faced with a very scary situation.
Sam was great! He had several heavy burdens to carry, divorced, two kids, and a father who is a convicted serial killer. Eason does a great job showing the emotional struggles Sam faced throughout this book.
The book is fast paced and one that is really hard to put down.
Although this is a book 3 of a series it can be read and enjoyed without reading the first two. If you are new to Eason and like fast paced action along the lines of Brandilyn Collins then you should love this story. If you're already an Eason fan this book will not disappoint.
Yes, I would recommend this book to fans of suspense. And I am definitely looking forward to a book 4 in this series!
I couldn't put this one down! Good thing I had a sick day because all I wanted to do was stay in and read. Talk about intense! This story had every element of great suspense. Highly recommended.
Grace Billingsley is a psychiatrist and behavioral analyst for the FBI. Her job is to get dangerous people off the streets. Prison psychiatrist Sam Monroe knows that just because a serial killer is behind bars it doesn't mean they are still not a threat. His father is a prime example of that.
Grace and Sam are both called to consult when a killer starts leaving victims. Sam has a lot of issues to work through because of his father. He hasn't wanted anything to do with his father. But it appears he's going to have to talk to him as the new serial killer is using his father's MO.
This is a fast-paced book that I couldn't put down. It kept me guessing the entire time. This is book three in the Extreme Measures series. It's a stand-alone novel and it's not necessary to read the first two novels. They are both excellent books so I do recommend that you read them.
I received this book from Revell Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.
I have read all three books in this “Extreme Measures” series and this author is one of my favorites who I have been reading for a long time. I don’t particularly like reading serial killer books but this story wasn’t graphic and had great characters and an interesting story line.
FBI Special Agent Grace Billingsley and psychiatrist Sam Monroe end up being called in to work another case together when more bodies keep showing up with a similar MO. Lots of drama and action in this fast paced, clean Christian fiction.
I enjoyed the twists and turns and how well Sam and Grace worked together, protected and understood each other. Although the plot was about finding a serial killer, it didn’t end being graphic which I appreciated. I can’t wait to read more books in this series!
I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.
Lynette Eason is one of my favorite romantic suspense authors. I've enjoyed this series so much and couldn't wait to read the third installment. It was everything I have come to expect from this author's books. It has lots of suspense, action, a bit of romance and a fantastic faith thread. I appreciate it when a story pulls you in and keeps your interest until the very end, and that is exactly what this story did.
This is probably my favorite book in the Extreme Measures series. You could easily read it even if you haven't read the rest of the series, but I would recommend reading them all. They're just so good. Now I am eagerly awaiting the last book in this series.
Lynette Eason never disappoints. Packed to the brim with intense suspense, fast-paced action, and hair-raising plot twists, you won't be able to put this book down once you start. The perpetrator's voice adds a different dimension to the storyline yet his identity remains well-concealed until the very end.
I enjoyed Grace and Sam's camaraderie as fellow psychiatrists doing their best - one to track down serial killers and the other to help them heal while in prison. Grace's troubled teen years and her brother's addiction are raw and real, as are Sam's guilt and anger at his father. Sam's teenage children are awesome secondary characters in the story, as is his mother-in-law. Grace and Sam's healing of past wounds is redemptive and inspiring.
If you enjoy thrilling suspense with a side of tender romance, you will love this book.
I received the book from the publisher via NetGalley and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
Critical Threat

⭐️⭐️⭐️
FBI Special Agent Grace Billingsley uses her skills as a behavioral analyst to put killers behind bars. Her colleague, prison psychiatrist Sam Monroe, knows that the threat doesn’t always end when the inmates are incarcerated. He has learned this first-hand in his work and also from his own father -- a convicted serial killer serving a life sentence.
When Sam and Grace are both called in to consult on a case with eerie similarities to the MO of Sam's father, they must work together to find the killer before he strikes again.
This was the third installment in Eason’s Extreme Measures series. Each book features one of four friends who met in a juvenile detention center and were positively influenced by a caring woman. One positive in the series is that each book can easily be read as a stand-alone novel. The support demonstrated by these friends toward one another is encouraging, but knowing each back story is not necessary to understanding their stories individually.
The plot of Critical Threat intersects the lives of two people who find themselves in stressful careers (behavior analyst and prison psychiatrist) mainly due to their need for personal redemption. This dynamic and the dysfunction in their family relationships made the reading at times heavy and detracted from the enjoyment experienced in the second novel.

I am reviewing a copy of Critical Threat through Revell and Netgalley:
FBI Special Agent Grace Billingsley tracks serial killers, she does so using her skills as a psychiatrist and behavioral analyst to get dangerous people off the street and safely behind bars. But prison psychiatrist Sam Monroe knows that just because a killer is incarcerated doesn't mean they're not a threat. His own father, Peter, is a serial killer in prison but certainly not out of Sam's life, as much as he wishes he was.
After bodies start showing up with Peter's M.O, Sam and Grace are called to consult. They had before, although Grace thought they'd made a real connection, Sam ghosted her. They'll have to get past the awkwardness and mistrust to solve this case especially because it's about to get personal.
I give Critical Threat five out of five stars!
Happy Reading!
Grace is a Behavioural Analyst for the FBI and Sam is a prison psychiatrist and the son of serial killer. Grace gets called in to work on a serial killer case and Sam is brought in as a consultant not only due to his profession but because of the similarities of this killer to his father’s killings. Sam and Grace had previously met and there is a connection there, but Sam had been hesitant due to his family drama. The serial killer starts coming after Grace, but she will not allow his threats to stop her from figuring out who he is. In addition to their work pressures Sam and Grace both have personal pressures they are dealing with. Grace’s brother is in the hospital and Sam is raising two teenagers and dealing with his dad, who is in prison, trying to establish contact with him. The characters felt very real to life, work isn’t their only focus they also have to deal with their personal stuff as well. I enjoyed watching them together trying to figure out who the serial killer was. I did have suspicions about who was behind it, and I was so excited when it was revealed that I suspected the right person. I shouted I knew it! The only issue I really had was that I became a bit confused about what exactly Sam’s role was because at times he seemed more of an agent than a psychiatrist. I did like the message that we can’t change actions from our past all we can do is ask forgiveness and move forward and God will accept us as we are. This is dealing with a serial killer and you know what has happened to the victims, but I did not find the killings all that descriptive and had no issues reading it. I really enjoyed this story and loved the mix of work and personal life as it made the characters feel realistic.
