This twisty, fun thriller kept me reading late last night! I would rate this a quick, fun, somewhat light mystery read, and I didn't figure out the ending, so a big surprise twist.
Sophie started a "wild woman's swimming group" in reaction to her husband's betrayal. She wanted some distance, and some bonding with new friends. The women swim in the cold open water, and they decide to take a trip together to swim every day in a remote Scottish loch. But on the way to Scotland, Sophie's husband tells her that one of the women on the trip was his lover. Understandably, this ruins the the trip for Sophie as she tries to figure out which of the women is lying to her. And her friends don't know what is going on so they begin to think Sohie is paranoid and maybe a little crazy.
I loved the "locked room" aspect of this story, and the setting in the remote Scottish highlands was fantastic. I found the story extremely fast moving and engaging, so much so that I stayed up late to finish it on the third night. My only tiny criticism is I wish some of the friends had been fleshed out a bit more. It was hard for me to differentiate between the three younger women characters.
I highly recommend this book as a fun read, and one that will easily keep your attention. I will be reading more of Jess Ryder's books!
Jess Ryder has done it again. This is a book filled with drama and tension from the very beginning. I have loved the way the plot has unfolded.
This is a book that pulled me in from early on and I’ve been unwilling to put this one down. The setting is so clear, you feel as though you are there with the characters.
My husband’s lover is a book which will grip your attention and keep you captive until the very last page. I have devoured page after page of this book in just one sitting.
I’ve read a few of Ryder’s books but this is quite possibly my favourite. I have loved the suspense and tension.
This has been a great read and I can’t wait to see what the author has in store for us next.
This one wasn't what i thought it was going to be. The synopsis left me to believe that the husband was having an affair with one of Sophie's besties. But that isn't the case. This group that she is going to a whole other place with she doesn't' even really know. And if your husband tells you he is having an affair with someone in your group, why wouldn't you just get the name from him.
I would have liked this better if the characters were a little more defined. They all sounded the same in the book. I did enjoy all the different POV's . The writing was good and descriptive and the imagery is perfections. Just wasn't what I wanted to to be so I was disappointed.
I really liked this book, I was not expecting the ending. And I thought I knew who the mistress was but I was completely wrong.
My Husban's Lover by Jess Ryder is a very atmospheric read that gave me the chills. I had that feeling of doom and dread the whole time I was reading it.
The part of the book set in the woods was really eerie, and I especially liked different POV's. I thought that it created the mood of the whole book.
I could clearly feel main heroine's anguish, fear and devastation, while on the other hand I could see why the other side tried to do what they planned to.
I wasn't invested in any of the characters particularly but it didn't lessen my enjoyment of the book.
It was steady paced and kept me interested.
I have to say that the ending even though it was fairly satisfying felt somewhat flat for me. I suppose I expected it to end with a bigger bang and to have more action packed conclusion.
All in all I highly recommend it for those who like slow burn thrillers.
Sophie is married to Ryan and the mother of 2 young boys. She recently discovered how much she enjoys swimming in cold water as she finds it very invigorating. So, she has formed a group of women who all enjoy gathering at a local lake for cold swims.
One day, one of the women suggests they go on a swimming holiday in Scotland. It’s a very remote spot near a loch. The place has no electricity or cell phone service, but they have a log burner to keep them warm. They all decide to do it and plans are made. As Sophie and Ryan are having some marital problems, Sophie is truly looking forward to this getaway.
After a fairly tough journey, they arrive with their belongings and settle in. The rough living is a challenge, but with the water being so cold, they find they all love it. But there is someone amongst them that is looking for revenge from something that happened a long time ago. In the book, that person is only noted as The Swimmer.
The cat and mouse game here is very well played and readers slowly learn what happened years ago and why The Swimmer is out for revenge. I found this to be a good read but just could not understand why anyone would want to swim in very cold waters. Brrr! Ah - but to each their own. Enjoy!

Sophie starts a cold water swimming group after her husband has an affair. He claims the affair is over, but when she decides to take a trip with the other ladies in the group, he confesses that the person he had the affair with is in the group and going on the trip, but he won't say who it is. Sophie decides to continue on with the trip to try to determine which person is sleeping with her husband.
3.5 stars.
I liked the premise, but this was a sort of closed door mystery and as much as I want to like those, I never really seem to enjoy them as much as other concepts. I think I have trouble differentiating between the characters that we are introduced to all at once. The book was fine. Nothing earth shattering, but I do like this author and will continue to read her books.
My Husband's Lover by Jess Ryder was nice thriller. It starts with Sophie who organizes a group of women to go "wild swimming". She does this as a sort of therapy as she and her husband are having problems. Her husband has cheated on her and Sophie is grappling with forgiving and moving on for the sake of her children.
Sophie organizes a tech free week with the ladies in a remote place to do their wild swimming. However, as she prepares to get to the spot she finds out that one of the ladies is the one that cheated with her husband. She decides to continue with the vacation and tries to figure out who was the guilty one.
I tried to figure out who was the cheater but in the end got it all wrong. In all, I enjoyed the book and liked the different perspectives as you do hear the voice of the woman who is cheating with Sophie's husband. She tells her side of the story. There is more to the story and I recommend reading it to find out what.
This one started super juicy! Sophie is going on a girl’s trip to a very remote location with some women she doesn’t know very well. As she sets off, she realizes that one of them is having a affair with her husband.
I really loved the first two-thirds of this book, and then the ending fell kind of flat and seemed weird. Still, if you’re a thriller junkie, you may just love it.
I love books that have the perspective of the main character and the “bad guy”. I especially loved the fact that the bad guy was disguised as a friend, but you didn’t know which friend until the end. What a fun thriller!
I didn’t however expect the book to end like it did. I was expecting a big showdown, but either way. I definitely enjoyed this read! I couldn’t wait to get back to it.
I highly recommend this book!
I haven't had chance to read any books by this author before but I certainly will be after My Husband's Lover!
This is exactly the kind of book I love - a psychological thriller that grips you and keeps you guessing until the end!
Sophie is devastated by the news that her husband has had an affair. As she travels to a break with her wild swimming friends, her husband admits that one of her group of friends is his lover. Staying in a remote cottage in Scotland, the plan to relax and escape her worries is replaced by the need to find out the secret identify of her husband's lover.
This book is a gripping and enthralling thriller that unravels with drama and suspense in every chapter. It was intriguing as revelations and secrets were revealed and Sophie finds her way ever closer to the truth.
A truly gripping narrative with an ending I didn't see coming. Recommend!
My Husband’s Lover by Jess Ryder
This is such a well written book with a very clever plot. I found it to be such an easy to read page turner. The twists got me. I thought I had it figured out, but nope! I was wrong on several occasions in the book. Without a doubt I recommend to anyone who loves suspense.
Many thanks to Jess Ryder, NetGalley, and Bookouture for the advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book, but didn't love it as much as the author's previous books.
The story begins with Sophie, a keen wild swimmer, who is going away for a break to Scotland with several other members of her swimming group, Grace, Ariel, Elise, Keira and Fern. An idyllic scenario, except that Sophie's husband Ryan has just told her that he has had an affair with one of the group. And she doesn't know which one.
The premise of this sounded exactly the kind of story that appeals to me and it started off strong, setting up the scenario and characters. The wild Scottish scenery was brilliantly captured and I could really picture all the wild lochs and beaches. For me though, I found it hard to warm to any of the characters, which made it hard to care what happened to them.
The writing is cleverly constructed to leave you continually guessing who the mistress was and I have to say I didn't guess. However I felt the story flagged somewhat about halfway through and when the culprit was revealed and the reason explained, to me, it felt a bit of a let down.
Having said this, it was a perfectly good psychological thriller and I'd definitely read more of the author's books.
Thanks to author Jess Ryder, publishers Bookouture and Net Galley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'My Husband's Lover' by Jess Ryder.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Jess Ryder, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 14th October 2022.
This is the fourth book I have read by this author. I have previously read 'The Night Away', 'The Second Marriage' and 'The Girl You Gave Away' which I highly recommend.
I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'A completely gripping and addictive page turner. Fans of The Guest List, K.L. Slater and Jackie Kabler will be utterly hooked on My Husband’s Lover.' I am a huge fan of KL Slater so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of Jess and if this is half as good as 'The Girl You Gave Away', 'The Second Marriage' and 'The Night Away' it is sure to be a page turning read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of 39 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Scotland 🏴 , UK 🇬🇧 . I always enjoy when books are set in the UK as I'm from Wales and have sometimes visited areas mentioned in the book. This makes it easier to picture where the scenes are set at times. I have in fact visited London on many occasions including this year so am looking forward to possibly recognising name places.
This book is written in a mix of third and first person perspective and the protagonists are Sophie and an unknown narrator known as 'The Swimmer'. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything. To have the benefit of both first and third person perspective ensures you don't miss out on anything.
OMG!!! Just WOW!!! My heart is still pounding now!!! Yet another amazing page turner Jess!!! Another huge congratulations on what is guaranteed to be a best seller!!! If you pick up this book then clear your schedules as you will not be able to put it down!!
This book is fantastically written, another amazing success from Jess Ryder. The descriptions are vivid leaving you tasting the sea salt on your tongue and feeling the hairs on your arms rise!! I thought the cover, title and synopsis worked perfectly with the storyline.
The storyline itself swept me straight up and didn't put me down until the last page. It has a strong and realistic plot which you can see running through your mind as you are turning the pages. A true page turner. It is filled with twists, turns, nail biting suspense, lies, tension, loss and drama. I was completely surprised at the bombshells and just kept getting shocked and blown away as the storyline goes on and the mysteries are all revealed layer by layer. .. Its quite hard to describe what I mean without giving too much away. I was kept on my toes constantly with the rest of the shocks to come, none of which I seen coming!! I just could not put it down!!! Every time I thought I will finish the chapter and leave it there for a bit each chapter seemed to end in a cliffhanger!!! Another major success for Jess Ryder. I am looking forward to reading more of her books and would love to see this one turned into a movie.
It is set over multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture.
I was completely invested in the characters and most have them seemed to have something to hide which you find out piece by piece. I must say I love how Jess has put in the voice of the mistress by calling her "The Swimmer" meaning we get to see what happens through their perspective. I loved trying to work out who they were along with Sophie but I never did guess so a HUGE WELL DONE TO JESS as it is getting harder and harder to shock me but yet again you managed. Its so hard to say how I feel towards certain characters without giving too much away!! Each character had their own strong and unique personalities and were all realistic making the story feel more realistic and helped it to come alive.
Another HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Jess!!! This is exactly why you are one of my favourite authors!!!
Overall a gripping page turning psychological thriller that will keep you guessing and questioning yourself throughout.
Genres covered in this novel include Thriller, Psychological Fiction, Psychological Thriller, Mystery and Suspense amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of The Guest List, K.L. Slater, Jackie Kabler and anyone who loves Jess Ryder's books. In fact anyone who is looking for an amazing read!!

My Husband's Lover by Jess Ryder fulfilled my rather high expectations, and I raced through the pages in a matter of a few very enjoyable hours.
A group of women set off on a retreat to the Scottish Highlands. The women are members of Sophie's Swimmers, and are drawn by the lure of a loch that will test their mettle in the water. Just before they leave, however, Sophie learns that her husband is having an affair with one of the group's members. What follows is a tension-fillled getaway full of intrigue and suspense as Sophie attempts to deduce just which of the women is her greatest threat.
Jess Ryder rarely disappoints, and this latest offering promises to be a hit with readers both old and new.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC.
My Husbands Lover was a page turner from the first chapter. Wife, husband, mistress and lots of secrets. The ladies go away for a week to a remote Scottish hideaway. Sophie finds out from her husband while she is traveling that one of the ladies is his mistress, and she is dangerous. It will not disappoint.
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and Jess Ryder for the ARC for my review.
This is the fifth book I've read by Jess Ryder. Meet Sophie who is part of a group of swimmers; they are all on a sojourn in the Scottish Highlands. However, before they leave Sophie who is mum to nine-year-old Ben, learns that her husband, Ryan is having an affair... and his mistress is one of the swimmers. Tense and exciting, I was really invested in this chilling tale from the off. There are a few great plot twists and a surprising and shocking ending to delight the reader. Well worth a look.
This review was written voluntarily and my rating was in no way influenced by the fact that I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel from Bookouture via NetGalley.
After finding out about her husbands affair, Sophie starts a swimming group called Sophie’s swimmers. They meet every week and escape from their problems in the icy cold water. One member suggests a girls getaway trip to swim in the icy lochs in a remote location of Scotland. A week away, perfect swimming, and time with girlfriends, what could go wrong? On the way there Sophie receives a phone call from her husband saying his mistress is one of the women in her group…
. This book was full of twists, some of which I guessed, and some of which absolutely shocked me. It took me quite a while to get into the book, the character development was slow and some of the characters weren’t very likeable, Sophie included. Once I hit about the 43% mark I finally got to a point that I couldn’t put it down and needed to know what happened! This book had its ups and downs for me, but I eventually loved how twisty it got.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC in exchange for my honest feedback!
This reminded me a little of those old horror movies where you scream what are you thinking. LOL but if the character listens, then there wouldn’t be a book. I guessed at everything in this one and was rarely right. Who the body was. Who the mistress was. Who killed Carly. In my defense a few twists were really not guessable, but most I was just flat out wrong. And I changed my mind over and over as I read the Mistress chapters second guessing which “friend” she was. That is what you want in a twisty thriller, right?
I was hooked from the start and the story never let up. My only gripe is authors need to stop giving likable names to unlikable characters. Ryan is such a nice guy name to me and I am not spoiling anything by telling you he isn’t. He’s the husband and the title tells you he’s having an affair. I liked the angle that the women are swimming buddies that meet once a week, so it was the perfect setup to them not knowing each other all the well. And I liked the idea of the cold swimming. I never quite understood a polar bear plunge and when I equate it to a stress relief, I now get it.
This is definitely one of my favorites of the month. I love when I can’t figure anything out. It keeps me wanting more.
My Sunday plans didn't happen as I was in the picturesque Scottish Highlands with my wild swimmer girls, and what a break we had...
My Husband's Lover is sooooo good. It's well written, cleverly plotted, and an absolute page turner. It had me sucked in from the very first page. The story is told from several POV, including someone only known as 'The Swimmer.
Characters are credible and one of them is hiding a secret, she's Sophie's husband Ryan's mistress!
If a twisty, suspenseful thriller is your genre, then I would definitely recommend this book. I loved it and I hope you do too.
Many thanks to Bookouture for my tour spot.
