After reading other books by Jess Ryder, I couldn't wait to read 'My Husband's Lover.' This has become my favourite, so far, by this writer! The standard had previously been set high, and these standards have not only been reached, but the author has also smashed through them!
This book is a classic definition of a thriller read, full of plot twists, suspense and intensity. I was so engrossed that I ended up reading late into the night, as I was eager to discover which one of Samatha's friends was the deceitful one and losing track of time. As the conclusion was revealed, I was delighted that all my suspicions were wrong. The author keeps the reader guessing, as the perpetrator could have been any of the 'Swimmers'. The sign of a great thriller, in my opinion!
The location was written and described exceptionally well, and if Jess Ryder ever feels like putting her writing pen down, she would make an excellent travel blogger! Her picturesque writing skills are second to none.
As expected and assumed, this is a highly recommended five-star read that has been absorbed from beginning to end. Jess Ryder has quickly become one of my favourite auto-read authors; her books keep improving! I am excited to read more books this author wrote and what is coming next from her.
'The Husband's Lover' is out now and is unquestionably a must-read.
What an awesome, captivating, page-tuner! I was hooked from about chapter 3 and you would find me with my nose between the covers at every opportunity. Full of subterfuge, lies and heart-stopping moments, My Husband’s Lover is my first foray into author Jess Ryder’s world, but it won’t be my last.
Sophie and her Swimmers are off on a wild-water swimming experience in the depths of Scotland and one of them is there for an entirely different reason, but who is it and what is her reason for joining Sophie’s Swimmers?
My Husband’s Lover just goes to show that everyone has their secrets and we can never be too sure what is going on in another person’s life - whether good or bad.
If you fancy a fast-paced, riding by the seat of your pants, psychological thriller, then check out Jess Ryder’s latest novel, out now!
I am lucky enough to be a part of Books on Tour for this book, so thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review an ARC of My Husband’s Lover by Jess Ryder.
Sophie and her friends get together every week and they swim in the icy waters come what may weatherwise. Well the small group of women decided to go away on a trip and they find a remote cabin in the Scottish highlands and they get all excited about this trip. One of them bows out so only five go on this trip and just possibly, only four will return.
Sophie discovers that one of these women, women that she thought were her friends, is sleeping with her husband. So as we get Sophie’s point of view in this intriguing book, we also get “The Swimmer’s” point of view. The cabin will have no electricity, of course no internet, and the truth will definitely come out.
I loved playing armchair detective alongside Sophie as she tried to figure out which of the women was sleeping with her husband. It was also quite interesting to see the devious nature of the woman that was sleeping with Sophie’s husband as the story really took shape. As this book progressed, with excellent pacing and a dark atmosphere, with just the right amount of twists, this story definitely kept me riveted. With interesting characters, a dark atmosphere, twists and turns that caught me by surprise, and a shocking ending, this book by Jess Ryder was definitely a win.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
This was a dud for me. I may be on the other spectrum but I feel like I was tricked. The synopsis gave me a sense of Sophie, the main character, having this bond and friendship with these women and she has to find out which little evil friend is sleeping with her husband. The reality is that Sophie was barely even really friends with these people and my strawberry pop tarts I’m currently eating have more emotion than any of these people did in this book. The characters, the plot, the “mystery” and the end all fell so flat. I couldn’t feel for anyone and the secrets were just ludicrous.
Sophie started a group called Sophie’s swimmers who would go into the freezing water as long as they could and then hop out. It was all so refreshing for their minds etc. One friend comes up with an idea to go away for a week to a place that has a great swimming loch to do what they love and spend time together. Before they leave Sophie finds out her husband is having an affair with one of the people in the group and she is on a mission to find out who it is. You get some chapters of “the swimmer” who gives tidbits on who she could be and why she is doing what she is doing.
It started off strong and I was excited to see where it would go but it all ended up being quite underwhelming and I wanted to just hurry up and finish it. Unfortunately, this one just wasn’t for me.
Thank you Bookouture and netgalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
My Husband's Lover is a twisted book full of secrets. Sophie belongs to a group of women that love cold water swimming. One of the women in the group suggests that they go away for a girl's week where they can go somewhere rustic to enjoy the scenery and swimming. As they prepare for the trip, Sophie's husband discovers that the woman he has been having an affair with is part of the group. He panics and begs the woman to not go but she is determined to go. Sophie leaves early in the morning for the adventure. While taking a break from driving she sees that her husband has called with an urgent message to call home.
Sophie and Ryan have been struggling and seeing a marriage counselor to help them save their marriage after he blurted out he was having an affair. Sophie really needs a break from Ryan. After receiving his urgent call, she calls him, and he reveals that one of the women in the group is the woman he has been seeing. He wants her to come home now so they can hash it all out. Furious, Sophie says she can't since she is the driver and yells that it's over. After hanging up she can't stop thinking about who it might be. She becomes consumed by her thoughts and puts them in danger with a near miss car accident.
Upset about everything that is going on and not knowing who to trust, Sophie tries to manipulate the truth form the group. But someone has a plan in mind that will put Sophie's life in danger. They have been keeping their own secrets which are more painful than having an affair with Ryan.
I thought this was a wonderful mystery with lots of twist and turns revealing many secrets being kept for the final reveal.
My Husband’s lover is a brilliant suspense thriller. As soon as I’d finished reading the first chapter I knew this was going to be my type of read. This book is full of suspense and a few twists to keep us on our toes. It’s told mainly from the point of view of two people, Sophie and the mysterious ‘Swimmer’. I had no idea who the swimmer was and was desperately trying to read between the lines of each character to work it out which one it could be. This is a very well written thriller that I was completely engrossed in from the very beginning until the final sentence. 5⭐️
This is an intense read and one that kept me hooked throughout. Recovering from her husband's affair, Sophie starts a wild swimming club as a way to escape the pressure of rebuilding her marriage and forgiving him. So, when one of the women suggests a week away on a digital detox holiday in the middle of nowhere with plenty of loch swimming, Sophie leaps at the chance.
Things start to go wrong though when Sophie finds out that not only is the affair not over, but the woman is part of her swimming club. The problem is though she doesn't know who. As Sophie's paranoia influences reality, it's clear things are not going to end well.
Well written and filled when tension as you know something is going to happen but you're just not sure what, My Husbands Lover keeps you turning page after page.
I will admit that Sophie as a character gets rather annoying after a while, as she reacts to some things in such a strange way. However, I do like how flawed and damaged she is. It is clear that she is not a sweet and innocent victim in it all which gives the story more depth. A great winter read, this was great to curl up with on a cold night with a warm brew!
A group of swimmers go on a trip
To an isolated cabin in Scotland to swim in the loch. Sophie is aware that one of them is her husbands mistress. But which one is it? How can she tell? Is there any danger to her like Ryan said?
I loved the setting of this book. It was creepy and Damp and cold. I wasn't sure which one of the girls it was. Sophie isn't safe, who can she trust?
The twist at the end will leave you shocked. Who knew that's how it would end! Pick up your copy today and dive into the loch and get lost.
Thank you to netgalley and bookouture for this ARC
My Husband’s Lover by Jess Ryder was full in your face suspense. Sophie, the lead character, made me crazy at times, but overall, I could relate to her. The author was very good at building up suspense, giving the reader a little bit towards an answer, then start building the suspense again. The story could move slow at times, but always picked back up.

My Husband's Lover had me gripped from the description alone. The remote Scottish hideaway is my idea of heaven so the setting alone made me want to read this book and wow what a book! It was full of twists and turns, secrets and lies and I did not see any of them coming. A fantastically gripping book that I would highly recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC.
A paranoid and twisted thriller. Sophie goes a vacation to Scotland with her girlfriends from her wild swimming group. And quickly, her trip turns from wild swimming to deadly. Her husband who's been having an affair calls with urgent news--my mistress is in your group. Yikes!
I loved the setting here. So serene and beautiful. An opposing backdrop to the drama unfolding. I was sure I had it figured out a couple of times but was shocked when the story took a sudden turn. A damn good read.
This is a cleverly plotted thriller that will most assuredly keep you guessing until the end. The book grabs you at the beginning with a shocking twist; Sophie's husband has been cheating, and she's just found out that his mistress is one of the people on a "wild swimming" getaway she is currently attending. Sophie is determined to find out who this woman is, but there is so much more in store for her than that.
The plot twists in this novel never let up, and the reader is on a literal roller coaster throughout this exciting read. Because this is a plot-driven book, character development sometimes takes a back seat, but that does not take away from the story. The concept of a swimming getaway called "wild swimming," which is basically swimming in a natural, remote location, rain or shine, sometimes with few amenities, is something I haven't heard of before. It's the perfect setting for a thriller.
If you love books with shocks you never expected, pick this one up. Fans of thrillers will love Jess Ryder's latest. My rating is 3.7 stars, rounded up to 4.
I received a free copy of this book from Bookouture via Netgalley. My review is voluntary and my opinions are my own.
Secrets, twists, and turns! My Husband's Lover grabbed my attention on page 1 and never let go. This was a riveting, gripping and shocking page turner!
Sophie needs some time away. She and her cold-water swimming group are looking forward to going away for a week. It is just what she needs, or is it? When she showed her husband a picture of her swimming friends, he gets a strange look on his face and then while driving to their cabin, he calls to inform her that one of her friends is the woman he has been sleeping with. Talk about spoiling a trip. To top it off, he won’t tell her who his lover is leaving poor Sophie anxious, looking for clues and questioning her friends. He is obviously not going to be winning the husband of the year award.
This was a fun and gripping book. Like Sophie, I had on my super sleuthing hat, trying to figure out the identity of his lover. That was the fun part and no, I did not guess the mistress. But I enjoyed reading as events unfolded and particularly enjoyed how Ryder provided the "voice" of the mistress in the chapters titled "Swimmer". Very nicely done.
The setting of this book was fantastic and provided a secluded, atmospheric background for Sophie to do her own painful detective work.
I found this book to be well written and nicely paced. I read this in one day as I did not want to put this book down!
Although this book did not make me want to swim in icy cold water, it did make me want to read more of Jess Ryder's books!
This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.
The story was entertaining and filled with angst and drama but there were times that I did not understand why Sophia would want to spent a vacation trying to figure out who her husband was sleeping with among her swimming group.
Some times there were events that just did not make sense - like when Kiera disappears, The guessing and wondering about who was the mistress was done well, as you are thrown some red herrings and it was easy to start to suspect the wrong person!
I was disappointed that the incident with Fern was never explained and you were left wondering what happened there while the mystery of Carly is explained and instead of closure for the family, it only brings more heartbreak.
Sophie brings the story full circle as she goes back to the swimming club at the end and seems ready to start her new life.
A quick, action packed read! Jess Ryder introduces us to her cast of characters which includes wild swimming. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was completely surprised throughout!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!
I thank Jess Ryder for the enticing read. Once I read the cheated on wife goes away with a group Of women, one of whom is his mistress, I absolutely had to read it.
I tried to eliminate each one of the women as a potential culprit, but the author doesn’t make it easy. The mistress is only known as the swimmer as her real identity comes much later.
There Is much history intertwined with both Sophie and the mistress, although neither one knows it, which is deliciously deceptive.
Sophie should have listened to her Nan more and Ryan, the husband, is a dirtbag, through and through.
These wild swimming women are all friends, it would seem,
So they're off for a holiday by an isolated loch - is it a dream?
However, there are secrets they've kept from each other

Which one she is determined to discover.
With secrets from the past that have been hidden away
Never spoken of or brought into play.
As the holiday unfolds there's a cost to pay
For someone that cost will be their life one day.
A totally enthralling and intriguing read
Your page turning addiction this story will feed.
With shocking revelations and unexpected history
This is a fascinating family drama and friends mystery.
For my complementary copy of this book I say thank you.
It is a gripping read and this is my honest review
Solid Mystery/ Suspense. This is an interesting tale told mostly from the perspective of a wife whose husband had informed her (before the events of this book) that he had had an affair - and now she's trying to pick up the pieces of her life. The other perspective we (sporadically) get is mysterious... until it outs itself in a rather shocking twist. Ryder here manages to convey the isolation of her environment well - isolation that this American didn't realize was possible at all on that particular island across the pond. And she uses this isolation well to both increase the sense of danger and to convey the emotions swirling around her central characters. Truly a solid read within its genre, and very much recommended.
This was my first Jess Ryder book and I loved it!
The plot intrigued me so much. Loads of suspects, tons of mystery, and I loved the introduction of The Swimmer POV too, to give us more clues along the way.
The pacing kicks straight off and maintains throughout. I was constantly guessing who the mistress was, and it was expertly plotted.
Loved all the characters too, they were perfect 'love to hate' people and all had my suspicions at some point in the story.
Highly recommended.
I’m torn between 3 and 4 stars here, so let’s just give it 3.5.
This was good, but not great. I’m going to mark this as spoilers because what I have to say could probably be considered spoiler-y but I won’t name names or anything. So continue at your own risk I guess.
I really thought I had the whole thing pegged. I thought I knew who “the swimmer” was for sure. I mean, it’s gonna be the least likely person right? Well I was wrong - but then it turned out I was also right. And I have mixed feelings about that. While it was a great twist, I’m not sold on the way it was revealed in the end. And I absolutely could have done without the bit at the end.
Overall, it’s one I’ll recommend but it’s not one that I’m gonna shove in your face.
