Michelle Sagara continues the Chronicles of Elantra in Cast in Eternity. Corporal Kaylin Neya has front desk duty for the Hawks when Mrs. Erickson comes with her usual gift of baked goods and unusual story from unseen people who are ghosts. They have been concerned about the weapon of Kaylin's partner Severn. Kaylin can also see these ghosts and the ghosts living in Mrs. Erickson's home. While investigating these puzzles, Kaylin stumbles over a forgotten forbidden story of a long supposed dead Barrani. Then everything falls apart as usual for Kaylin and she and her friends have to save the city from disaster. Wonderful paranormal adventure.

Kaylin is front and center in this mystery fantasy novel. After investigating ghosts in Mrs. Erickson's home, she discovers that the elderly woman has some very special powers to see not only the dead but others not quite so dead. Along with Teela, members of the cohort and Severn by her side, she discovers a deeper dark scheme in place. Ever diligent, impulsive, and intuitive, Kaylin comes to the heart of the disturbance and in true Chosen fashion sees it through to the end.

I'm a fan of the Chronicles of Elantra series. In my opinion, the series gets better with each book. In this latest installment of the series, Sagara really puts Kaylin up front. I saw a lot of growth and acceptance in the character. I also found her a little more mature and introspective. I think what I liked most about this book as it felt self contained. While there are elements of overarching plots, it really is about Mrs. Erickson, her ghost friends, and the reason for their being.

This is a very heavily plot driven book. While relationship elements are there, a lot of it is about the story. Readers can find a bit of the explanation dialog throughout the book that helps clarify some of the world building and political and magical nuances as well. I'm not a big fan of these, but they were relatively short and added more to the story rather than distracting from the over all flow. I did find some of the explanations regarding small pieces of the plot a bit throw away. I would have loved to see more in depth descriptions of the fighting and interactions during the story climax as well. Honestly, while I felt some pieces of the book a bit lacking, it didn't lessen my enjoyment of the story. I was still hooked.

The book was a fast read for me. I was all in from the beginning and found myself disappointed when I had to remove myself from the story. I would suggest that first time readers start at the beginning of the series. Like other fantasy series, there is a lot of information that lends itself to understanding the most recent installment. Overall, a wonderful fantasy read.

Complex and fascinating continuation of this universe. Strong characters with a depth that draws you in. The story is very complex and there is an entire host of characters and they all play major parts. Be sure to read the first 16 books as to have a clue what is happening in this one.

The characters in this series continue to show growth as well as forming stronger bonds in each book. While I wish sometimes that the world would get smaller so that I could see my favorite characters more often, I don't know who I would give up! This series continues to be strong in every way and I look forward to each new book.

Thank you Netgalley for providing me with an advance copy for review.

This addition to Sagara's Elantra series is very good. It is a significant improvement on the last few books. The last few books were quite good, and I will be reading them again.

The improvement in this book was there was a new interesting problem to solve with an unexpected thing going on. Kaylin and her crew then proceed to sort it out. There is a nice little morsel left over for a subsequent book, but the resolution is satisfying. It is easy to follow along with the story and the characters and understand what everyone is doing and saying and why.

There is only a shortish scene of the characters wading through amorphous fog as opposed to rather longer ones in the recent books (the amorphous fog is explained at last. And very helpful it is too!).

I would not advise starting with this book. Start with book 1. Be prepared for a slow enjoyable unfolding.

I hadn't realized this was part of a series, which may explain why I struggled with it. I'd suggest reading the prior books before checking this one out.

Cast in Eternity by Michelle Sagara, just the latest in this great series. Kaylin is still finding trouble without even trying, and making new friends along the way.
