All you have to say is fae and Im sold. I love faery books. They can be set in magical worlds or in the real world with the faeries hidden. I loved the lore in this story. Bryn is charismatic and fun. You just cannot help being pulled in by the sexy Caiden. Their romance was spicy. He is fae king of the night court. Add in that he rules Vegas and it makes such an awesome story. Thank you to NetGalley and RB Media for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
I could not finish this one unfortunately. It was a little too overdone and over the top. Maybe it’s a good book for some people at the right time, but wasn’t it for me
First, read by this author, and it won't be the last! I loved Caiden and Bryn's story. This is an absolute must-read if you're looking for a steamy fantasy story and the age-old question of what happens in Vegas. I can't wait to see where the author takes the readers with the rest of the series!
First read by this author and first in this genre of a human who finds herself in a fae world and falling for the Dark King ! Loved Bryn and Caiden’s story! I will definitely check out more of this author’s work. Narrators were spot on as these characters.
Great storyline !
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to listen and read this book as an ARC.
I LOVED this book! it was dark and delicious all at the same time. Paranormal Fae set in LA where they are hiding among humans. The twists and turns regarding the main character had me spinning. I want more and more of this book. I have already read this one twice and listened to the audiobook once. I would compare this book to a Neon Gods style writing. I also went a bought a hard copy so I can reread on those days I just need a good book.
This book was so delicious. I don’t typically read this genre but sometimes i get moody and need a little spicy and something otherworldly and this fully delivered and satisfied my craving! Hopefully that doesn’t sound cringy haha. But i really enjoyed this one and it was such a great introduction to the series
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This was a delicious romance novel. I throughly enjoyed it and cannot wait for the next installment.
Hello Books Lovers,
I present this book with a question, are you looking for something about Fae, set in Las Vegas and that is veryyyy Spicy? If the answer is no then I don't tell you to continue reading this review spoiler-free, but if the answer is Yes, or even just Maybe then keep reading because I'm about to introduce you to a title released recently, already available in audiobook, which could respond to the real definition of Fairy P * rn.
The title, if you haven't already figured it out from its cover, is The Dark King by Gina L. Marxwell and is the first of what will be a trilogy of standalone books, so they will all be readable on their own. I told you about the audiobook because the audiobook is the version of this book that I received and from which I read / listened the story.
The publishing house is the magnificent entangled publishing that is publishing masterpieces upon masterpieces. As I said before, this book is very spicy, it's an adult book, so if you don't feel comfortable with the genre, don't read it because it's very pushy and explicit. A peculiarity of listening to it was being able to have two narrators for the two points of view. And the narrator of Caiden, the male lead? oh boy.
Everything in this book will seem like a coincidence at first. Bryn arrives in Las Vegas because she receives a letter stating that she has won this trip. She will then come to stay in one of the most requested hotels in Vegas with a waiting list that can be extended to months. But she arrives there and thanks to this invitation / letter she has everything ready, much to the surprise of those who work at the hotel.
But this is not the strangest thing that happens. Bryn meets a man in the arcade, they hang out together, get drunk and spend the night together. The real twist is that the next morning they wake up and are married and neither of them remembers what happened and neither of them wants to accept the situation. But Caiden is not a normal person, he is the King, not only of Vegas but also the King of the Dark Fae, who have been fighting for centuries with the Fae of the light.
He should marry one of his own kind and not a human. What does not show the light at the end of the tunnel is that a bond is forming with Bryn, a bond that would not be possible to have with a human but for some reason it is happening and from here a lot of things will follow because apart from the relationship between Bryn and Caiden and their love story there will be much more.
Secrets, mysteries, dangers and broken hearts. A lot is going to happen in this book which I highly recommend you read. I hope it will be translated in Italy. Of all the books of the genre that have been translated, this one would surely be one of the best and it deserves a lot. I can't wait for the second one to come out because, thanks to the final chapter of this book, with its twists, it was possible to find out who the protagonists of the sequel will be. I already foresee sparks and can't wait.
I cannot give details on the writing, having listened to it. But in listening to it, I have never finished an audiobook so quickly. I couldn't turn it off. I listened to the narration day and night, morning and evening, at any time of the day until it ended - sadder thing - and now I just wish I had the second in my hands. The dark king is not just a smut book, it has a story, a subplot and a lot of romance. As smooth as the narrative was, I believe the writing is probably just as smooth.
I do not read alot of PNR but I am going through a phase and I will tell you now The Dark King was so good!
Caiden... Whew Caiden Love me a dark hero and a dark Fae - Lets just say I will be digging deeper into Faelore.
This was so much darker, steamer than I was expecting after readying Neon Gods , I didnt think that was a thing - but here we are.
This was my firs Gina Maxwell book but will not be my last!
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and Gina for my audio copy!
This is my first book completed in 2023 and I couldn't be happier!
This book was a great start to a series. I really enjoyed the world building in such a unique way! One of my favorite parts but wish there was more casino - personal preference.
Because of the back and forth with the two I was missing the lighthearted funny banter between them for the later 40/50% of the book though.
Bryn really was a firecracker and I liked that even with the bond and love she didn’t lose herself or her will. It wasn’t like a puppy following the owner around! Certainly, new and I couldn’t be happier!
Caiden is alright, I think we could have followed him more and gotten more of his personality.
I think book two is going to be even better following Tiernan and Fiona! 😍
I think the best summary for this book is: The essence of ACOTAR x 50 Shades of Gray x Neon Gods x Hades & Persephone! Loved the two narrators (Avery Reid & Aiden Snow), they did a great work giving this book voice and I hope they’ll also narrate the next books in the series.
Special thanks to NetGalley, RB Media, Recorded Books, and the editorial team for giving me the opportunity to review the ARC in audiobook format and to you, my reader, for taking the time to read this honest personal book review.

This was my first book by this author, and I immediately bought the paperback so I could make my bff's read it too!
Easily in the top 5 list of my favorite books of the year. The audio narration was perfection, drawing you into the story and not letting go until the end.
Dark and steamy, I never wanted to put the book down and plan on reading it again soon!
I absolutely loved this book, I loved the characters, the storyline, the vision it created. I had trouble with the audio voice though, I think I would have enjoyed it more physically reading it.
Thank you to NetGalley for this audio ARC. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I really enjoyed this. It was dark, sexy, at times downright funny and all in all just a good ride. The story itself was easy to follow, I guessed where this was going pretty early on but still enjoyed the journey. This is the second audiobook I've listened to with Aiden Snow as the MMC narrator and let me tell you I can listen to him all day long. If he is your narrator then you better believe I will listen to it. His voice is just...yum.
I really liked the characters, yes the FMC was a tad annoying but overall I liked her. This does of one of the tropes I hate with a passion in and that's miscommunication. Like come on guys talk to each other will ya! I thought the villain in this was pretty cool and I really enjoyed the curse and how it works. I guessed how the ending was going to go just before it happened and I was still a bit shocked.
If you're looking for an adult dark Fae story then maybe check this out. I highly recommend listening to it though!
The Dark King delivered everything I was hoping for and topped it off with a quicky Vegas style wedding. It was a hot hot read. I adored that consent was addressed.
The heroine was strong and there was some good banter. I can't wait for the next book.
Avery Reid and Aidan Snow were fantastic narrators. They complimented each other well
This book was exactly what I was hoping for. Hot fae, steamy scenes, and some solid sassy banter. Besides the romance the mystery was so compelling, and I had to know who was behind it all!
Did I mention it was steamy? Listening to a book like this is a whole different experience, but it was fantastic. The narrator was amazing, and I loved being with these characters.
Holy moly this book is good! At first I was skeptical. However grumpy/sunshine, fated mates, Vegas marriage gone wrong! Love it! Can’t wait for more from this author!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ out of 5
First of all I listened to this book in audio and the narrator of the hero has the most amazing deep gravelly voice that literally gave me shivers! This whole book had me glued to it and I couldn’t stop listening! This book was steamy as hell (and a little dark) and oh so perfect!
Our heroine decides to splurge on a trip to Vegas after losing her job and she meets the enigmatic owner of a huge hotel and they hit it off immediately. The next morning neither can remember anything and they are both sporting wedding rings…… Now if this doesn’t sound complicated enough our hero is the King of the Dark Fae and not only is he married to our heroine but also mated when that is a death sentence to one in his position. He keeps his new wife and mate around until he can figure how to sever their bond….. but we all know what happens in close proximity……
This book was hot hot hot 🔥🔥🔥, with the hero into some definite kink and the way he awakens those desires in the heroine….. just wow. The heroine is strong and refuses to put up with the hero and him trying to distance himself from her. Their journey is full of lots of ups and downs and I was here as much for their relationship as the rest of the plot! Can’t wait for the next book in the series!
Not what I was expecting and 100% in good way! A unique world that is steamy and dark.
Overall, this was a good book. It will appeal to people who enjoy dark fae erotic romances or dark fantasies worlds. Good world building, but could have used a bit more substance between the tons of steam!
I did enjoy the narration which brought the characters to life and definitely kept me engaged.
If this book is on your TBR I highly, highly recommend you pick it up on audio!! It takes a lot for me to recommend an audio because I usually cannot get my brain to fall in love with a story the same way I would if I were to actually read something, but the narrators were fantastic. Duel POV narration really pulled me into the story and it was PERFECT.
The story itself was great, spicy but with a great fae story as well that kept me guessing as to what would happen next.
As much as I enjoyed this story however, I actually may be a little more excited for the next one The Rebel King. After reading this one I am very excited to see what the next story will bring.
