A very appropriate title for a domestic noir where nothing and no one is what it seems. It grabs you from the first moment with characters that are not always likable. Full of twists and turns, although some of them can be seen coming, it is still a fast-paced, intriguing and highly recommended novel.
How far would you go to keep what’s yours?
Someone is hunting Cass.
Cass lives an enviable life: a successful career, two great kids, and a handsome husband. Then an email from her husband’s mistress, Emma, brings the façade of perfection crumbling around her, setting off a chain of events where buried secrets come back to haunt her.
What did I think? brilliant 5 stars. The house work finally got done before I started this one and thank goodness for that as it may have been left again. A well thought out storyline with a clever plot and well developed characters. Cass is a strong woman but what is happening in her life is going to bring her to her knees, I really felt for her and really had no idea how things would pan out. You are not sure who to blame and the reader is really left guessing as to who is behind all the evil in Cass's life. The book is told from different character POV's and I really had no idea as to who was making her life so miserable. I kept changing my mind as to who was guilty and this is what I enjoy about these kinds of stories, you are never sure who really is guilty as the characters as so well layered it seems impossible to pick.
If you love engaging thrillers then this book is for you. Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest unbiased review. Again another new author or me so I will be searching for more books from this extremely talented author.
Cass’ life is falling apart, her cheating husband Ethan slept with her employee, Emma and that’s just where the mess begins.
Emma harasses Cass, stalks her, terrorizes her for weeks until it all comes to a head. Cass’ assistant Alice is just a little too helpful….
We’re All Lying did an amazing job at giving you just enough info to need more, the kind of book that you didn’t intend to stay up to finish but now you’re 3/4 through and need to know what happens. I loved how creepy it felt, and ominous, there was something new hiding in every chapter.
This was just okaaaaay. It was one of those that started off strong. You’re getting the whole sense of crazy psycho feel that’s kinda fun for me but not so much for the characters and then it just plateaus to is that all you’ve got? I felt there was so much emphasis on making the main character Cass be this traumatized secret keeper liar but it never hit the mark. All the signs pointing to big crazy wasn’t missed so in the end it all just felt duh.
Cass is a happy wife with two kids married to Ethan. Life is good until she receives an email from Emma letting her know that she’s been having an affair with her husband. Of course it doesn’t end there, Cass gets harassed by stalking and texts and almost killed until dundundunnn Emma disappears. The way Cass acts with Ethan after finding out about the affair was eye rolling. I get it, a woman will go through all the emotions in that scenario but hers just felt so… written?! Scripted? Unnatural? Idk it just didn’t work for me.
The synopsis was basically the whole story with some fluff in between and the secrets revealed. It was a quick read but not one of those fast paced soak it up twisty kind.
Thank you Rising Action Publishing and netgalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
This was a fast-paced book with an unreliable narrator- a recipe for success in my opinion! The story centers on Cass, who lives a pretty ideallic life until she finds out that her husband had an affair. As the stakes get higher, you learn that everyone in the book has secrets to hide and their motives aren't always clear. There is action throughout as the author takes the reader along on the journey to uncover what is really happening.
I didn't find any character in this book all that likable (except Julie, who I want to be MY bff!), but that's OK. I didn't really get Cass sometimes- she made decisions that seemed out of character and sometimes I wondered how she had risen so far up the employment chain when she acted the way she did. However, I love an unreliable narrator so I was ab;e tp get past that. I did figure out who one of the villains was early, but the motive behind that person's actions were a big surprise. I did wish there had been more breadcrumbs that I could have figured out on my own, though. The end of the book was pretty satisfying and i felt that the loose ends were tied up.
Overall, fun read that was full of action the whole way through. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A mind bending, heart racing, page Turner that I found very difficult to put down. Is Cass crazy or is someone really out to get her? The twists and turns and sudden leaks of information were absolutely amazing! I loved all the dfferent types of characters. The book goes back and fourth between a few character view points. I did figure out who the "stlaker" really was pretty early on but didn't mind much. A wild roller coaster ride that kept me on edge the whole time. Definitely one of the best books I've read this year. Thank you to the author and publisher for the ARC. This will definitely be a selection for book club.
We're All Lying is filled with twists and turns. It's the story of Cass Mitchell and her husband Ethan. Ethan had an affair with one of Cass's employees, Emma. One day, Emma decides to email Cass and disclose the affair complete with pictures. Cass is incensed and confronts Ethan. He admits to the affair and asks Cass's forgiveness. First, she kicks him out of the house, then she lets him back in to sleep in the guest room. Finally, she lets him back in her bed.
Cass claims to be plagued with emails and texts from Emma harassing her. She makes a police report. Also, three million dollars goes missing from Cass's company, to which Cass blames Emma. And then Emma turns up dead. Cass is the accused. She later admits that she sent all of the emails and texts to herself, all except the first one. She is jailed, but her attorney, Felicity, gets her out.
One night, the Mitchell home is set on fire. They escape. Cass blames Emma, but later learns that Emma has been murdered more than a week ago and couldn't possibly have started the fire.
Enter Alice. Alice is Cass's long time assistant. She is obsessed with Cass. She knows way too much about her, including her code to her home security system. She breaks into Cass's house and goes through her things. As time goes on, Alice invites Cass to her home for coffee and Alice kidnaps her. She confessed that she's the one who killed Emma. And she's the one who stole the money. She's also the one who set fire to Cass's home. She wanted Cass to run away with her to the Maldives. Of course Cass is not having it. Then sordid truth comes out. It turns out that Alice is Cass's big sister. Their mother gave Alice away and she ended up in horrible foster homes. Cass, on the other hand, when their mother died, ended up in the loving home of their grandmother. Alice was jealous.
In a scuffle, Cass ended up killing Alice with no repercussions. The truth all came out.
In the end, Cass asked Ethan for a divorce. Their daughter Aubrey got married and their son Ben was enjoying the single life. Both Cass and Ethan ended up with someone new.
This book had suspense and intrigue, two things that I look for in a good book. The characters were well developed and the story line was easy to follow. It held my attention from start to finish. All things considered, I gave this book five stars.
I loved the first half of the book. The quick pacing, building tension, and drama all made for an engaging read. However, things fell apart for me in the second half. The narrative started to jump around a bit and many of the characters' action felt inconsistent.
Most frustrating of all for me was Cass' development. Her motives seemed unclear and ever-changing, even though the majority of the story was told from her perspective. Additionally, every twist was pretty predictable, which made for a very anti-climactic ending.
Wow !!!! What did I just read!!!???
We're All Lying is the kind of book where you need to block your calendar, lock the door, turn off your phone (seriously) because you WILL read it in one go.
Here's my favourite quote from the novel "It must have been an animal, or my mind playing tricks on me" because if you know... YOU KNOW
This novel needs to be adapted into a Netflix film!!!!
Tell me the truth in your lies.
My blood boils so much to what was happening to everyone in this book. Maybe coz I know what cheating does to people and watching too much true crime docus helped me picture the tension of what happened in the story.
I was on my edge of my seat on some parts and this was something that I read fast because I just want to know what happens next.
Honestly, I will put this book in my “If you wanna be convinced not to get married, read this” category. lol
BUT SERIOUSLY! HOW COME THE SIDE CHICK IS ACTING LIKE A LEGAL WIFE?
Absolutely love, love, love!!! I read a pot of domestic noirs and this was such a fresh take on the genre with a really original plot so I was hooked. It's fast paced and the characters really do get under your skin. I flew through it in a couple of days and it's one of the best books I e read recently. As for the twists and turns, even a seasoned pro like myself didn't see some of them coming. Must read!!
Imagine husband cheats on you. But you have to deal with all the backlash. Your life is thrown into chaos. You are being harassed and your work is being effected. Sounds like a nightmare, right? Well, that is what happens to Cass. One day she opens an email and it has photographic proof of her husband's affair. Quickly things turn to chaos. Her husband's mistress disappears and now Cass is no longer the victim. She is now under investigation as her world continues to fall apart. Question is: what really happened?
What I enjoyed:
- the pacing is well done. Very quick read!
- Multiple POVS through three characters. Cass, her husband, and Cass's personal assistant
- The twists!! There were a couple twist I didn't expect a couple of them either
- The ending was great too
Great thriller read and debut novel! I cannot wait to see what the author has in store for the future. This one really kept my interest and I ended up spending my day reading it. 4 stars out of 5! Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Cass lives an enviable life: a successful career, two great kids, and a handsome husband. Then an email from her husband’s mistress, Emma, brings the façade of perfection crumbling around her, setting off a chain of events where buried secrets come back to haunt her.
A taunting email turns into stalking and escalates into much worse. Ethan and Cass try to move on, then Emma disappears.
Now, this was certainly a fun rollercoaster ride. What impressed me from the start was Still’s writing. There were lots of interesting metaphors and dark humor. Still knows how to make you feel what the characters are feeling, and to convince the reader that Cass is really hurting. We can feel her mind unraveling and you just feel for her. There were to other POVs, her husband and assistant. They both added to the overall quality of the book, and made it more exciting.
The plot was engaging. I wanted to know what had happened, and even if I guessed some of it, there were some surprises. There were some hints that made me realize something was going on.
The story is fast-paced, there is always something new going on. I loved that the book started with Emma’s disappearance since it prepared you for the escalating suspense.
I would definitely recommend the book to others!
Thanks to netgally and rising action publishing for the arc in exchange for my honest review
I flew through this! It was such a page turner and had me on the edge of my seat! I love domestic thrillers and this may have just broken into my top two ever. Its hard to say too much because I'd want someone to go into this blind, but please do yourself a favor and read it!
What did I just read?!
Like seriously almost had a panic attack half way through I became far too invested in Cass and Ethan. It was amazingly well written with plenty of twists and turns. Even if Ethan is a piece of shit and Cass is slightly crazy. Perfect for those who love thrillers!
Impressive debut novel! This is a great story. I was surprised quite a bit and I love that.
This story revolves around Cass. She's a successful business owner with her best friend from college. She married Ethan whom she met in college and they have two kids. Her own childhood was not pretty, but she's worked hard to put that behind her and create a great life for herself. So when she finds out that her husband of 19 years has cheated on her, her world starts spinning out of control. It made me question what I would do if my 18 year marriage imploded in the same way and even though she did some questionable things, I could understand why she did. I really wanted Ethan to be worthy of redemption, but as the title implies, everyone is lying about something. Did I think I knew who the bad guy would be and was I right, yes, I was. However, I had no idea why and no idea how it would all play out. That's what makes a book like this so good, when you think you know but you don't know everything, so you're still shocked by what you find out. There were many twists and several points of view, but not once did I feel confused, only curious. It's a very well written story. I think a lot of people will relate to the turmoil of what Cass believed to be a solid marriage. I look forward to what this author will do next.

We're All Lying is a great debut! Full of twists and surprises, it kept me fully engaged from start to finish. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
I have to say I REALLY liked this book until the last chapter. This was a very interesting read and it kept me hooked the whole time. I am a little disappointed that everything wrapped up in a pretty little bow. Most stories that are like this end with another twist that keep you thinking about for days. This was what lacked for me and why I only gave this book 4 stars.
Overall, this was a really great book. Still kept you on the edge of your seat and had you guessing the whole time, wondering what the heck was going on. Great writing. Great story plot. Mediocre ending.
Thank you to the author and the publisher for allowing me an advanced copy of this novel in return for my honest opinion.
A dark and gripping read. I couldn't put this down. A wife, her cheating husband, and the mistress. Drama to the max. So many great twists and an explosive ending.
Wow this was so good! Marie Still knocks it out of the park. Great storytelling along with fabulous characters create a masterpiece. Lots of tension, twists and turns. And crazy reveals! Don’t miss this one. Highly recommend
