Where do I even begin to describe how much I loved this book? I originally read it based on the title alone, because I have always feared being like Charlotte Lucas or Mary Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. I'm not approaching 30 and even though I tell myself I don't care, there's still a small part of me that still has that fear.
I'm Not Charlotte Lucas is about a girl whose legal name is Charlotte Lucas, though everyone calls her Charlie. She's fast approaching her 27th birthday and she has always feared ended up like her namesake from Pride and Prejudice. Charlie draws a lot of similarities between her life and that of Charlotte Lucas from the book and movies. They both have sister's named Maria, they both have friends named Beth, and they've never experienced the love story that tends to be attributed to Lizzie and Mr. Darcy.
Charlie is set up on a blind date with the grandson (Liam) of her next door neighbor (Vera). Vera is trying to set Liam and Charlie up because Liam has come out of a difficult break up and has a giant work event coming up, put simply it's a formal ball in his honor. Charlie originally turns the idea down and thinks that maybe this grandson should go with Beth, because everyone loves Beth. However, Charlie being Charlie, she decides to help Liam out for Vera's sake.
I absolutely loved how relatable Charlie was. It all felt so raw and real, so personal, and it touched me because it was like looking in the mirror when reading about Charlie's thoughts and experiences. Liam and Charlie have such brilliant chemistry and banter, and I found myself smiling like an idiot as I watched each encounter between the two of them unfold.
This book is a clean romance, no spice, and mentions of make out sessions that are closed-door. This romcom will warm your soul and give you something to smile about. It pulls from Pride and Prejudice as it's inspiration while adding its own identity to create this beautiful book.
I received this book as a free ARC on NetGalley for an honest opinion. Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and Kasey Stockton for providing me with this opportunity to read this book.
3.5 stars for me.
It is a bit charming and cute book, it has some nice secondary characters but the main characters did not work for me. I could not find much chemistry between a gorgeous rich guy and a self-doubted poor girl. What do they have in common to build the future on? Any average looking girl with an average job would never be happy with a gorgeous guy with unlimited funds because she would forever feel inadequate and not in his league. I wish we stopped focusing so much on the appearances, the looks, and the wealth. Men can be very attractive and good looking without having "Hollywood" looks whatever that means. Actually men who have more substance than a symmetrical face tend to be even more good looking. Hard working men without having to rely on their family wealth are actually more attractive. CEOs or any other type of Wall Street guys tend to be psychopaths and not very interesting to relate to.
I do love the title.
So the end of the story is that I wish there were more substance to the book despite its light hearted approach. I do love a good fall in love story after all.
Thanks to Netgalley for a free copy in exchange of an honest review.
I was absolutely so excited to read a retelling of Pride and Prejudice, especially one seemingly centered on Charlotte Lucas.
Sadly, this wasn’t my jam. Charlie is an unsympathetic FMC who has put herself in the position she’s in and refuses any outsider help or opinions, understandable to those who may have lingering trauma. But she doesn’t want to help herself and continues to complain about her Woe Is Me Situation.
The writing felt like a debut and the story was all over the place with no consistency. I do wonder if a better editor could have made a more cohesive story to where the ending didn’t have me knocking down stars for how frustrating the whole novel was.
Really liked the whole Jane Austen vibe with a modern twist! It was such a cute read. Thank you so much for sharing the arc!
I love everything Kasey Stockton writes! And this one did not disappoint. This is a beautiful contemporary story full of dreams, uncertainties, growth, and an unsuspecting romance. The growth in this story-to look beyond what appears to be her lot in life-was my favorite! I really enjoyed this story.

This was a cute read. Loved all the Pride & Prejudice details. I enjoyed it, but wanted more depth and would have loved for our FMC to have a bit more gumption.
This is a good book. The two main characters are Charlie and Liam. They meet when Charlie accidentally hits Liam’s brother when she is backing out with her car. There is an instant attraction. They start dating. They each have trust issues up together they work them out and fall in love.
3.25 stars!
I *mostly* enjoyed "I Am Not Charlotte Lucas" by Kasey Stockton. This is a contemporary "clean" single-person POV, 20-somethings romance. Jane Austen fans will LOVE this book as it is rife with references and nods to Jane Eyre, Pride & Prejudice, etc. It is a quick read with a saccharine-sweet, helpful, doesn't-know-the-power-of-her-own-talent FMC in Charlie, and a super-rich, suave, honest, handsome philanthropist MMC in Liam. Charlie needs to overcome her inadequacies and insecurities in love, art, and life to realize her worth to the world. If she does, she might realize that Liam may have actual, very real feelings for her and that she might actually have real talent as a painter.
Individually, I liked the characters just fine, but I didn't feel a whole lot of love or chemistry between Charlie and Liam. I would have liked more passion, more romance, and more stakes. Their first date has a great set-up, but once Charlie gets back into her unconfident spiral, the book takes a dip in quality. I think that it takes SO long for Charlie to realize her self-worth that the book suffers as a result. Also, there are some well-written secondary characters that make the story more fun, including Vera (Liam's meddlesome grandmother), Beth (Charlie's best friend), and Spike (Liam's younger brother). There are a few funny moments, but I wouldn't call this a rom-com.
I hated how Charlie lets a simple miscommunication get in the way of her potential relationship with Liam. Like....just ASK about the text messages??? It's not that hard?? I also vehemently disliked the third-act breakup. Charlie gets in her head because of some criticisms she heard in the past, and she lets them affect her present and her potential future. I wanted to scream at her!! I think we're all scared of our insecurities, but she just seems absolutely crippled by hers.
Maybe more hardcore P&P fans would like this, but for me, it's just "fine."
Thank you to NetGalley, Kasey Stockton, and Covenant Communications for providing me with an ARC copy of this book! All opinions are my own, and I was not compensated for my review.
I'm Not Charlotte Lucas is about a girl, named Charlotte Lucas, after the character in Pride and Prejudice. She is desperate to be different from her namesake, despite the fact that she always thinks of her best friend as the Elizabeth in their relationship. She is single, and afraid that she will become a spinster. She works as a manager in a bank, despite her art degree. Her lovely elderly neighbor convinces her to go to a gala with her grandson, playing on Charlie's emotions, saying he has been through a breakup and needs someone nice to spend time with. The grandson, Liam, is smitten with her, but she can't believe someone like him could possibly be interested in her, so she sabotages things and settles, instead, for going back to an ex-boyfriend. Will she stay safe and comfortable, banking with Bingley, or will she find some self respect and leave the things that don't make her happy behind? Will she realize she's worthy of Liam, her Darcy, and take the leap?
I liked the idea of this story, if not the execution. I was surprised at how little I felt for the characters. I wanted to *feel* how Charlie was attracted to Liam, not just be told about it. I wanted to be convinced that they couldn't live without each other, but I just didn't. The writing was fine. The story was safe, not at all spicy, and Charlie's crippling insecurity started to get on my nerves. I didn't believe the love, because I couldn't feel it. All in all, it was a cute story, but it left me wanting.
i loved this book! an amazing romance, with some of the greatest characters i’ve ever read! i’m a big fan of pride and prejudice so i could only love this story! if you too are a big jane austen fan i totally recommend it!
A fun read. When Charlie agrees to go to a ball with her neighbours grandson she is not expecting Liam. She thinks he is out of her league, so will she be proven wrong and get her HEA.
A great read and different take on a Jane Austen spin off.
Charlotte Lucas might be named after the literary Charlotte Lucas, but she's determined not to live out her life. She does not want to settle for a Mr. Collins, but she is nearing her 27th birthday and unmarried. She's afraid that the similarities are building up and she's destined to live a satisfactory, but unfulfilling life.
When Charlie agrees to go on a blind date with her neighbor's grandson, Liam, she's immediately intrigued, but he's a Darcy-type, and she's Charlotte Lucas. Can the sidekick ever get the main man?
Charlie was cute, yet very lacking in self-esteem. She spends all of her time taking care of others and their feelings, and doesn't do much for herself. Liam was a dream! He was sweet, and determined, and not as standoffish as the original Darcy in the beginning of the story. I loved that he saw Charlie, and how he helped her find herself.
This is a cute story for Jane Austen fans, but could still be understood and related to by a regular reader of sweet romance. It's not just for mega fans! I also saw the potential in it for more Jane Austen spin-offs. I hope to see Beth's story!
Really enjoyed this book. Kasey Stockton did an amazing job bringing these characters to life. The emotions are real and honest. Everyday struggles are given light. Charlotte learns that she is not her namesake. She makes the decisions that shape her life. She doesn't have to be influenced by what she thinks others think about her.
THIS BOOK IS SO GOOD!!!
Liam has officially made it to my book boyfriend list. Love him!
Charlie is such a sweet character!
I felt like this book was so relatable to life and a few parts definitely hit very close to home!!!
Loved the connection to Pride and Prejudice and how Charlie found her Darcy, instead of Mr. Collins!
I loved this book! @authorkaseystockton did such a good job with Charlie. I loved the way she wasn't sure about herself. But Charlie was constantly second guessing herself. Was she really good enough? The reader doesn't learn until way later in the book why that is. And that made Charlie seem more like a real person.
I really loved the way she met Liam. She was set up with him by her adorable neighbor that she can never say no to. But...you'll have to read the book to see what I'm not telling you there.
I loved that Liam wasn't at all what she pictured him to be. He was kind and down to earth. The kind of guy who will do anything for you. Including climbing the trellis to get to your room to unlock the door.
This book was so great! I loved it so much.
I was sent an e-copy of I'm Not Charlotte Lucas as a gift from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
It took me only 24 hrs to read I’m Not Charlotte Lucas and I’m not ashamed of the lack of social interactions I had during that time.
Synopsis:
Northern California girl Charlotte “Charlie” Lucas has two great loves: Diet Coke and Pride and Prejudice. But her passion for Regency classics is tempered by a very real fear: Charlie is terrified of having to endure the fate of her namesake—spinsterhood. Despite her best attempts to maintain a modern sensibility, she can’t say no when an elderly neighbor asks Charlie to attend a charity ball with her grandson. Blind date or not, Charlie is powerless to resist the allure of a real-life ball. Soon it’s clear that she will struggle to resist the charms of her blind date too.
Liam Connell is every bit the swoon-worthy leading man, straight out of Charlie’s daydreams. But he’s completely unattainable—his last girlfriend was a gorgeous actress and a far cry from Charlie’s world. So after a magical evening with Liam, Charlie is ready to get back to reality, even if her best option right now is a former boyfriend who wants to give it another shot. Unfortunately, despite imagining she’ll never see Liam again, he seems to be everywhere. How is a lady to move past a fantasy when life suddenly seems to be imitating fiction to an alarming degree?

I can’t get over this book. I’ve never read any of Kasey Stockton’s books and now I need to go read them all. How have I survived without this author in my life. Kasey wrote a engaging story with main characters that we could relate too. Anyone else spill their coke down the front of themselves at work? Just me and Charlie? Okay. The adorable flirty text messages, and sweet kisses. *swoon* Definitely need to add this to your TBR pile if you haven’t done it already.
I was given an ARC for my review. This is my opinion.
3.5⭐️
Did someone say Pride & Prejudice??
This was an endearing contemporary romance that had one of the dreamiest boyfriends ever! And Charlie (FMC) was funny and had my sense of humor. I had a lot of laugh out load moments and I loved the HEA. I really liked the mentions or comparisons to Charlie’s life and the P&P characters and I thought that was well done.
But being honest here, Charlie drove me crazy!!! I struggle with overly insecure females and there was a bit of that. It’s that “we can’t be together vibe” and it gets to me. I want to scream at the book and say, “give in already!”
But having said all that I did enjoy it and recommend.
Thanks Covenant Communications via NetGalley.
I really loved this book and found Charlotte's character easy to connect to and root for, and sometimes also get frustrated with. Just stop with the people pleasing, my only criticism is that I wish it had held more space for Charlotte to become fully confident in herself as she is and find her value. I understand it is a written as a parallel to Pride and Prejudice so I get it. It was a good read and it would make a lovely book club pic.

I always thought Charlotte got a bad edit in Pride and Prejudice. Back then, it was marriage or abject poverty. How could anyone blame Charlotte for choosing stability?
I’m glad to see Charlotte getting to be the main character in this story, tho I still don’t think spinsterhood (are we really still using that term?) such a tragic fate. There’s a reason single women are rated the most happy.
This book is sweet and silly and funny and satisfying.
If you love Jane Austen, love a good, modern retelling, and want to spend more time with an underappreciated, original character, this book is for you.
7/10
