I'll start off by saying that I was able to receive an ARC of Frost through NetGalley. I've been on a huge fantasy kick lately, and when I came across this book I had to request it right away. It sounded so interesting, and I was really hoping that it lived up to my expectations.
So this review is a little late because this book came out on October 3rd (it's currently on Kindle Unlimited), but let me tell you I flew through this book. One of the things I loved most about it is that it's set in modern times. So many fae books I've read are set in different times, made up times, etc. This one talks about memes, TikTok, reality shows. It's amazing, and I'm so glad I found this author.
Not only does C.N. Crawford incorporate fae into our modern world, they also create amazing characters. Ash and Shalini both are women I can completely relate to, especially since they love reading (and especially smut). Ash is stubborn, but also tough as nails. She doesn't back off from a fight, but also is gracious to others. I really loved her character.
Another part of this book that I really enjoyed is just the all out fighting. While I'm mostly pretty peace-loving, I do love hockey for it's brutality. And that part of me really loved the parts of this book that were brutal. For those who aren't a huge fan of that though, it's not totally gruesome. There honestly are only one or two parts that truly made me cringe, and they're pretty spaced out.
And obviously, this is a fantasy romance read, so I can't get away with not saying anything about the romance between Torin, the Seelie king, and Ash. There is TENSION. And it's glorious. There's also a little side romance blooming, and I can't wait to see where both of these relationships go. Especially with Torin's little secret.
Ok, and for my final part of the review, THE ENDING. Y'all, I didn't see it coming exactly, but had hints throughout the book. I have no idea when the next book is coming out, but I need it RIGHT NOW. Until then, I'll be reading the rest of C. N. Crawford's books, hoping that they're as good as Frost and can hold me over until the next book comes out.
Overall, I gave Frost four stars. It's a really interesting read, and I highly recommend it.
This was overall a very fun read. I love King Torin and I was WISHING we would have gotten some more spice between him and Ava- but I assume that will be coming in the next books!
I do hope this goes through another round of editing because there were multiple grammatical errors and repeated words. Another thing I caught was at the beginning of the book also said it was Avas 23rd birthday when really it is her 26ths.
The cliffhanger was UNCALLED FOR! Haha I cannot wait for the next book!
4 stars!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was such a fun read! Ava was a great FMC, strong but not too sassy, not afraid to show vulnerability and also kick ass. I loved her humour and sarcasm and her friendship with Shalini was great!
Torin was a fair but scary king with crazy powers and poor thing is cursed to turn anyone he loves into ice.
His banter with Ava was great and there was plenty of steamy moments though no spice in this one yet. I loved his filthy mouth!
The tournament was fun and I liked how each Princess had some personality and they weren’t all carbon copies. Lots of mystery and action and plenty of questions revolving Ava’s real identity.
The ending was a bit abrupt and I was unsure what was happening. I had hoped for some resolution between Ava and Torin before she disappeared.
Also I need a Shalini and Aeron novella or a bonus scene about them or something!
Can’t wait to pick up book 2 😊
CN Crawford is becoming a favorite go-to author. (authors?)
I've also been listening to and enjoying The Demon Queen trials audiobooks, they became a sort of go-to, guilty pleasure. Everything about the writing, the characters, the world is so addictive! Quick, fun, action packed, steamy and with just my kind of lead characters!
Frost checks the same boxes and then some. I really enjoyed this book so much, I wish we had more books in the series to binge read! It takes a new, modern spin on Fae stories and everything is so rich, fun, yet believable, that it really makes you feel like you live there with the characters too.
Basically, it gives you a taste of what our world would be like if Fae walked among us. Obviously, they would be gorgeous, powerful, rich and popular. They would be all over the news and social media. They would have fans and groupies. But naturally, we wouldn't be fazed by any of that, busy living our lives as we'd be. Or at least, our heroine isn't. But she gets the attention of the Fae King and kaboom! It all goes crazy.
We have a Bachelorette style of competition, except it's filled with scary supernaturals and death traps. The King himself helps and trains, but it's only so much he can do.
I really, really enjoyed the main characters' interactions. The banter, the tension, the chemistry, the slow-burn, the secrecy, the growth... Everything flies so easy and natural with them. You know I LOVE a badass snarky main character and seeing her getting stronger, taking no sh*t from anyone and learning more about her heritage and fae life was just sublime.
Now, about our grumpy Fae King - what can I even say?*sigh* The definition of tortured, smoldering, wicked alpha hero.
Great worldbuilding, action, spice, curses, slow burn romance, fast paced... All in all, a great read and I can't recommend it enough! Especially if you love arranged marriage tropes, slow burn, Fae, trials, curses and wicked relationships.
*I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion as you know, all my fangirling is my own.
Favorite quotes:
"Oh, shit. Do we have something else in common?” I shuddered. “We should probably stop talking before we get involved in a messy emotional entanglement.”
“But that’s what we’re like. The fae. We are creatures of the earth and mists. We are warriors. And when we are at our best, we transcend our bodies and commune with the gods. When was the last time you really felt alive, Ava?”
Because if it were you and me, in the oak grove on Beltane, I would have you screaming my name. Calling me your king. I would have your body responding to my every command, shuddering with pleasure underneath me, until you forgot the human world existed at all.”
“Tell me again how much you hate me.”
My pulse quickened. “Is this your kink?”
“Something like that.”
“We are a match made in hell, but I have never wanted anyone more, Ava Jones.”
I loved this!!! First of all this book is like The Bachelor but with faeries and instead of dates, they have deadly competitions. Oh, and the bachelor is the Fae king. Ava was such a fun character. I loved how sarcastic and witty she was. Her conversations with Torin when they were first getting to know each other had me cracking up and then as their chemistry developed I loved their banter and the heat between them. Torin was so broody and swoon worthy. Those little moments when he would accidentally show how much he liked Ava had me melting. But the best part was the mystery of Torin’s curse and Ava’s true history and parentage, It had me on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. I need answers!! I can’t wait to see how this all plays out in book 2. I need the conclusion to this story asap!
Absolutely fantastic! I was hooked from the very beginning of this book and I loved every second. I literally cannot believe that ending. I need the next book immediately. A cursed fae king. A fae girl who has grown up in the human world. A meeting of chance. A bargain and a competition to win. The suspense and tension was fantastic.
*thank you to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
⭐️4/5 stars.
Wow. I could not put this down. I agree that it definitely was like the Bachelor, but in my opinion, I think it was like a more adult version of The Cruel Prince.
First off, you sold me with this description of the Torin by describing him as Henry Cavill when he was in Tudors meets Poseidon. But then we got to have her best friend along for the journey and this best friend was amazing! Like she is all of us if we were in this situation. Like her saying, “I volunteer as tribute” to Torin.
I also loved how here the fae are common knowledge to the humans. They mostly live separately, but they know and idolize them. Yet, the fae talk nonchalantly about violence and I liked that it felt more like their classic mythology.
Overall, I’m already recommending this book. It was so good. I’m also going to read this authors backlog.
Thank you to Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for providing the ARC for my honest review.
5 Stars
I was soo excited to be able to review this book after seeing so many amazing reviews.
This book did not disappoint. This is the first book in this series and is a fantasy romance which features enemies to lovers, slow burn romance, broken hearts, hidden powers and curses.
Ava is a low born fae living in the human world after being left in the human world when she was a child.
When the High King Torin announces a fierce competition to look for a fae bride, Ava who wants nothing to do with the fae or marriage ends up in the competition after a bad break up and making a drunk spectacle
of herself with the High King.
This book has a great plot and some twists too which you don’t see coming. The world building was great too.
I loved all the characters and felt they were well developed throughout this book.
I can’t wait for the next book in the series!
I definitely recommend this book.
Thank you to Netgalley, C N Crawford and Victory Editing for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The sexual tension, the cliffhanger, the violence. If you're a fan of acotar you'll love this. Can't wait for the next one.
I received an ARC of this novel in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This was a fantastic read. I loved every single page and the interactions between Ava and Torin left me squealing. It was sexy, tense, magical, and hilarious.
The story follows Ava Jones, Fae female living in the human world, and Torin, King of the Seelie Court. After coming home to the worst birthday surprise of all time (surprise, your boyfriend is cheating!) Ava runs into Torin at a bar. Their brief but memorable interactions leads to Torin inviting Ava to join a traditional competition to become Queen of the Seelie Court. Torin and the Fae need a Queen to bring life back to the Seelie land, but for a reason he refuses to say, it has to be a sham.
For $50M, what does Ava have to lose??
My favorite parts:
- World building is simple, believable, and beautifully written. I love the attention to detail surrounding Fae lore and it was incorporated beautifully so I never felt like I was on the receiving end of an info-dump.
- The tension between Torin and Ava is toe curlingly delicious
- Shailani is a delightful supporting character
- The perfect amount of intrigue and mystery surrounding Torin's decisions. You're constantly on the edge of your seat without getting whiplash
- The dialogue and banter was A+
- The cliffhanger ending AHHH book 2 needs to come out ASAP!
There wasn't anything I particularly disliked about this book! I do wish it were spicier but I hope that's rectified in book 2.
Do yourself a favor and read this book!
I will say it’s hilarious and such a fun journey. I loved that the fae and humans coexisted and the humans believed the fae were basically these incredible celebrity/gods that they adored and fangirled over. I LOVED the reality show idea of filming the competition.
The chemistry between our two mains was top tier. I really just ate up the tension and spice in this book.
The ending was an incredible cliff hanger that had me screaming when it ended. I LOVED IT!!! I was gassed. I need so many questions answered.
This is my first book by this author duo and I was drawn farther and farther into this book as it went along. I was a little iffy at first as I was reading, for I can not handle reading coming of age stories, it was a great surprise that this is definitely not that at all.
Ava is a great main character, she has her flaws and doubts, but since being raised in the human world and being picked on as a child she feels more empathy. Having a best friend like Shalini is what she really needed, and Shalini is an outstanding side character. Her interactions with Aeron and ways she lets us know more about this world is key.
The banter between Torin and and Ava throughout the whole book will make it so you can't put it down. I was always wanting to know what challenge would be next and how they would prepare for it. The slow growth of hate to love is wonderful because of the few dual POV chapters you get to really know what Torin is going through as the trials go on.
I am excited for the second book in this series and will definitely be adding it to my collection.
I loved this book! It was addictive, fast paced, very entertaining and kept me completely hooked from the beginning to the end.
The story itself was a great concept. It was a violent and sexier version of The Selection books, but also much better because fae, duh.
Ava and Torin are literal goals, aside from the whole unfortunate 'if I touch you, you die' issue. The banter and the sarcasm was very entertaining, and I laughed out loud more than once.
The book ends on a huge cliffhanger (I freaking hate cliffhangers, I am far too impatient), and now I'm just sitting here swearing that I'll have to wait goodness knows how long before I can read the next book.
HELLO I'm now obsessed with Ava and Torin, I can't wait any longer :( AND this book isn't even technically out yet, so clearly I'm just over here in a world of pain.
Anyway this book is so freaking good, please read it. (also Andrew sucks, what an ass).

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This book was so good!! 🥺
I added it to my wishlist as soon as I saw a few quotes and Torin's fanart. I mean.... How could I ignore him?! 👀🔥
I was so thrilled when I was accepted to read the ARC.
Loved Ava's personality. Even with everything awful that happened to her since she was found in the human world when she was a baby, she still has dreams and plans and believes in people.
Until Andrew f**ks everything and Ava gets drunk and says a few truths to the High King of the Seelie (Secondhand embarrassment 😶🙈)
Her best friend is the bestie we all need: supportive, nonjudgmental, hungry for adventure and funny. And reads smut.
The High King, Torin, needs a Queen to heal Faerie and the 100 fae selected by himself will compete for his hand in a tournament - an old Fae tradition.
(101, cause he decides Ava it's the perfect choise for the job 🤡)
Torin looks like the morally grey character that we're used to, but he soon shows us that he's not.
The tension between Ava and Torin is so good to read. The slow burn between them mixed with a bit of enemies to business partners to friends to lovers was perfect.
The pace is really good. And I'm obsessed with Fairie and the worldbuilding, that seems basic, but turns out to be well more complicated, and towards the end we get ourselves asking a lot of questions and wanting to know more about the Seelie and Unseelie and their powers, myths and curses. Like "wait what?! 🤯"
The secondary characters added an extra layer to the story with the Princesses exposing the atrocities of the other Clans and making the tournament the bloody part of the story.
Orla being mysterious and powerful. Shalini helping Ava to get through the story. Aeron being Torin's support. And Andrew being a douchebag. 🤡
It's one of those books you read in a sit and when you finish you're like "Nooo!!! It was so small!! I need more!!!"
Already pre-ordered the next one cause now my life's incomplete 🤡
♡No Spoilers♡
-Synopsis: On Ava’s birthday she discovers her long term boyfriend in bed with another woman. Heart broken and defeated, Ava heads to a local pub to drown her sorrows with her best friend. She has an encounter with the Seelie King and their confrontation goes viral. King Torin makes her an offer. Ava will be rewarded Fifty million dollars if she participates in a competition to become the Seelie Queen. All she has to do is survive and not fall in love. The entire competition will also be televised for the first time by humans.
-This book was unique and not something I’ve really read before. It’s got magic, romance, and competition. I really enjoyed the pacing and the events throughout the story. {I received a digital arc from Netgalley.} Frost is available in paperback and on Kindle Unlimited.
-Characters: I loved the banter and flirting between King Torin and Ava. She’s feisty and doesn’t hold back while he’s distant and more reserved yet protective.
Shalini the best friend who reads smut and isn’t afraid to tell Ava what’s on her mind.
-Overall: I really loved the story and was really invested in how Ava would fair in the trials and how her relationship would grow with King Torin. Also to see if she could find out any information about her birth parents or why they sent her to the human realm. I am so excited to read the next book because I need more answers and more Ava and Torin time. I will definitely be recommending this book to my friends.
5/5 ⭐️
1/5 🌶
I love a good fantasy book and this one did not disappoint. The world building was great and I enjoyed the different magical elements. The cliffhanger has me wanting the next book already to find out what happens with Torin and Ava.
Ava is a fae girl that was left to be adopted into the human world when she was 6 months old. She never knew her birth parents and was struggling with an ex when she saw the fae King. The fae King, Torin has a curse that he isn’t allowed to tell anyone about. This in turn makes the story captivating. The story unfolds beautifully and I love the banter between the FMC and MC.
I NEED BOOK TWO NOW!!! Such a fantastic read, I couldn’t put it down. If I could, I would give it 10 stars. All of them, it needs all of them!!!
The characters are dynamic and likable, the storyline is unique and enjoyable, and that ending is great, even for those of us who HATE cliffhangers.
100% recommend!
I was given an Arc copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I read this book in one sitting!
I’ve read CN Crawford before and absolutely loved their writing but this one blew me away.
Ava is a faery living in the human world until Torin the Fae King convinced her to compete to become his bride…the only stipulation is that it’s not real and she will never be loved by him!
She enters the competition and realizes she’s fighting for her life too!
I highly recommend this book! 5/5 stars for me!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for giving me a copy of this book to read and review. These thoughts are my own.
I really love C.N. Crawford. I’ve read a bunch of her books and was never left disappointed. I almost didn’t finish this one thought. It didn’t really grab my attention until a little over halfway through but I’m sure glad I finished it and I can’t wait for the next book. The way this one left off…man I’m already getting impatient.
I really love Ava. She seems like the type of person I’d hang out with lol. Her and Torino’s interactions are hilarious yet spicy. I really hope they end up together because my heart will break if they don’t.
I gave this 4 stars!
“Our kiss was the first star in a night sky - a spark of light surrounded by darkness.”
- C.N. Crawford, Frost (Frost and Nectar, Book 1)
Sooooo, apparently I do love The Bachelor inspired books as long as you make it bloody and brutal, you know, a la Hunger Games… and with absolutely no love involved. Or maybe… just not the normal kind. Maybe it’s a very dangerous kind of love 😏
This had fae, brutal fights, slow burn romance, beautiful friendship, secrets, curses and one hell of a twist at the end. If you’re looking for a new adult fantasy series to drool all over, look no more: THIS IS IT! C.N. Crawford outdid themselves with this unputdownable new book.
This book is perfect for those who love:
🖤Hunger Games + The Bachelor
🖤Dislike to love
🖤Curses
🖤He teaches her to fight
🖤He pressed his forehead against hers
🖤S*xy slow burn
Adult. 5 stars ⭐️ Thank you @cn_crawford @victoryeditingngc @netgalley for this amazing eARC 🖤
