This was an interesting read. I wish I had known it was the second in a series! With that said, perhaps some of what I dont understand about the world, may get explained in book 1.
What I loved: our main character is a young black teenager from Oakland, that has found herself charged with saving the world. In the post apocalyptic setting, she is the prototype for an army of warriors called the Josephines. In this book, they are tasked with tracking down the folks that are attempting to compromise a language she created with her dead sisters ghost. Sounds crazy but, this was fast paced, action packed, and I enjoyed having a young black teenager as a hero of what could be a sci-fi book. Great job!

I wanted to really like it, but i didn't fully. I enjoyed the main character; but the rest of the plot, setting, everything felt like it was missing something; hence left me confused

3.5/5
I wish I had known that this wasn't the first book in the series I wouldn't have requested it from Netgalley. While it was a very interesting plot and I really enjoyed the main character but nothing seemed to be complete. Everything seemed to be missing something. Do I think I'm going to go back and read the first one.. probably not since this book didn't wow me. But again if you had read the first one then you would probably enjoy it more than I did.
Thank you Netgalley for gifting me an advanced copy in return for my honest review.

If i would have realized this was a part 2 of another book in a series i probably wouldn’t have requested this title. Unfortunately I’m not that vested in this title enough to try to comprehend or to read the first part. Thank you to the publishers and netgalley.

Thanks, Netgalley, for offering me the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review.
I love the plot, and I really wanted to love this book, but I only sort of liked it. I found everything to be so... half-formed. I just found everything - from the description of place to the characters, to lack in depth enough that it was hard to actually envision any of them or their surroundings. I DO love the main character, and felt like I could probably have connected better with her if there was a little more to her, but I felt like one giant question the entire time I read this. Speculative fiction is my favorite genre these days and event though this is second in the series I still feel like parts of this world should have already been built.
