I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘The Silent Dead’, the second in the Detective Jackie Cooke series written by Marnie Riches, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

DS Jackson (Jackie) Cooke and DS Dave Tang are called out when the body of a woman is found with a roll of money pushed into her throat and a syringe mark on her thigh who Jackie recognises her as an old school friend. More cases come to light where women have been killed in a similar manner and just as Jackie and Dave arrest a man and have a second man in for questioning, another woman is found dead.

It's been a pleasure to read ‘The Silent Dead’ and meet up again with DS Jackie Cooke and DS Dave Tang as they work through clues with the help of DC Shazia Malik, computer genius Clever Bob and his girlfriend Zoe. Jackie is a detective who isn’t without her faults but is dedicated to catching criminals while constantly bemoaning the fact that she isn’t spending enough time with her twin sons Lewis and Percy and four-month-old Alice as she brings them up singlehandedly. Jackie and Dave don’t have a slick way of catching criminals and are probably the most realistic fictional pair of police officers I’ve read which makes this series all the more enjoyable.

I enjoy this series. Jackie is tenacious and torn. Juggling 3 kids and being a good detective is something she struggles with. And having so much personal drama while being pregnant and now with a newborn and twin boys who are acting up so to the drama has taken its toll. I despise her superior in this and find her partner sometimes needing a smack, lol.

But all in all it’s fast paced and engaging. Always interesting to me when I read something not based in US.

Thank you to #NetGalley and #Bookouture for my copy of #TheSilentDead by #MarnieRiches
Set in Manchester this is the second book in the Detective Jackie Cooke series, I haven’t read the first but that in no way spoilt by enjoyment of this one.
When Jackie and her partner Dave are called to a suspected suicide Jackie recognises the deceased, a girl she went to school with.
It quickly becomes apparent that this is murder and maybe it’s not this killers first or last. A very enjoyable fast paced read.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Silent Dead grabs your attention from the first sentence and it keeps you reading and you just can't stop. This is the second in the series but as I did, can be read as a stand alone. I just loved Detective Jackie Cooke. Jackie starts out about investigating the death of her old school friend. As Jackie investigates the murder she realizes this may be a serial killer and will get to the bottom of this. This is such a wonderful gripping story you just can't put it down. Can't wait to read what is next. Thank you NetGalley.

A fast-moving mystery that engages the reader with characters I’d like to spend time with - except the creepy ones, of course. The heroes and heroines have real-life struggles while devoting too much time to capably solving murder cases. Is an easy, fast-moving read that reveals clues throughout.

Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this ARC.

Jackie Cooke Book 2
Called out to a crime scene Jackie finds more than she bargains for the body is her old school friend Claire the note says sorry but Jackie's sure that Claire wouldn't take her own life.
Now more single mothers are being found in the same way and Jackie is determined to find out who's doing this because this time it's personal.
A really good read with great characters and a storyline that keeps you guessing.
Highly recommended.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC.

This is #2 in the Detective Jackie Cooke series but can easily be read as a standalone, which is what I did. I enjoyed it so much that I then bought the first book.

Jackie is called out to what appears to be a suicide. She realises that the dead woman, Claire, is her old schoolfriend and Jackie is convinced that Claire would never commit suicide. Jackie is determined to prove it, and her suspicions are correct when a roll of banknotes is found forced down Claire’s throat.

Jackie and her colleague, Dave Tang, work tirelessly to link other similar murders to this one, and they find themselves dealing with the ‘incel’ community – men who are involuntarily celibate and who sometimes commit terrible crimes against women.

This was a brilliant police procedural that kept me gripped and guessing, and I’ll definitely be looking out for more books by this author.

Thank you to Bookouture and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Silent Dead the second book in the Jackie Cooke series.
I was a bit disappointed in this story. It felt like the characters were just grabbing at straws trying to get their killer.
The story just didn’t keep me on the edge of my seat.
Hoping book 3 will be a better written story.

Book # 2 in the Detective Jackie Cooke series. In this book Jackie and Dave are on the hunt for whoever is killing single divorced moms. This is another twisty mystery, Jackie has to navigate her role as Detective and newly single mom herself.
Another solid book in this series.

A fantastic crime thriller featuring DS Jackie Cooke, who in my opinion, is the most realistic fictional Police Officer on the shelves at the moment.
Quirky, engaging, and at times maddening she is a stunning character
Couple that with believable and gritty crime scenes, and a very realistic investigation you left with a compelling, unputdownable book.

This is another very good police procedural from Marnie Riches. The plot is centred around the incel community and is quite harrowing, reader beware. The characterisation is excellent, Jackie Cooke is very believable as a single mum struggling with work and home life. She is investigating the murder of an old school friend but torn between spending so much time away from her young family. The twists are abundant, the pace is fast, there is plenty tension until the last page. overall, a very good police procedural which I would recommend to lovers of the genre. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

This is book #2 in the Detective Jackie Cooke series. It was a great read that kept me guessing-needing to know who the killer was. I would recommend the read. I can’t wait for the next book.

Detective Jackie Cooke arrives on the scene of a suspected suicide only to learn that the deceased was a friend from her school years. Jackie doesn’t think Claire, the girl she knew, would kill herself. She soon realizes that her friend was murdered and is determined to find her killer.

Upon investigating, Jackie soon learns that Claire may not be the first victim. One thing that both victims have in common is that they were divorced, single moms. Who is preying on these women. Will Jackie be able to stop the killer before he strikes again?

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Rachel drops her four year old son Luke off at school. He’s only been there a few weeks and is having separation issues and Rachel is pretty upset about it too. However, his teacher does her best to make him feel comfortable so Rachel returns home, hoping to catch up on some household stuff before she starts her shift at the biscuit factory. Just a normal day like mums all around the world - only it isn’t - today will be Rachel’s last day.

Detective Jackie Cooke and her partner Dave Tang are called out to do a routine check on what appears to be a suicide. Pills on the kitchen table, and a note containing one word - SORRY. However, Jackie recognises Claire, (who’s changed her name to Rachel) an old school pal, and nothing will convince her that she committed suicide - not Claire. Jackie isn’t wrong when evidence shows that she was in fact murdered. Determined to get justice for Claire and her children, Jackie has no idea that she will face up to a serial killer - yes this isn’t his first, and it won’t be his last.

This is a terrific police procedural that looks at the horrifying ‘incel’ community - a group of men who carry out violent acts against women. Jackie Cooke is a great character - a single mum struggling with 9 year old twin boys and a 4 month old baby. The relationship between her and colleague Dave Tang is great to witness, and you can be sure they have each other’s backs. The storyline was gripping, and although I sort of guessed who the killer was about half way through, it didn’t spoil my enjoyment, and besides I wasn’t entirely certain.
Here is a police procedural that works until the very last pages, and you have a magnificent, thrilling and immensely satisfying book.
Hadn’t read the first in the series but it read well as a stand-alone. Recommended!

Jackie Cooke is a police detective. An old school friend is murdered, and attempted to look like suicide, then more women get killed in a similar way. There are similarities between the women's situations, and the police are checking all the links to try to find the serial killer.
It's a bit generic, and the finale is a bit over-the-top.

Just like the first book filled with suspense from the first page to the very end . Lots a drama that will also keep you wanting to see what happens next .But in my opinion the best part was the creepy, foreboding atmosphere that the story had throughout the storyline , it literally had me checking the door to see if it was locked as well as wanting to check under the table in the dinning room. As for the characters themselves you can definitely see how much they've grown since the first book. With that said I can't wait to read the next one .

Marnie Riches had all the right elements that made it a quick and entertaining read.
I found this book highly entertaining. It was a very fast read, that kept my attention and I felt the conclusion lived up to the anticipation.
A true unputdownable crime thriller that will have you reading long into the night!

A new author to me, picked up from a recommendation on Twitter. It's a quick, easy read, heavy on the background of the main detective and light on actual police procedure with a few howlers. It passes an enjoyable few hours but not something that will live on in the memory.
I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was my first book by Marnie Riches and it won't be the last! While I feel like there are numerous series like this and they start to run together, the suspense and secrets kept me guessing. Great thriller!

The Silent Dead (Detective Jackie Cooke Book 2) by Marnie Riches

The Silent Dead grabbed me from the first chapter. This is the second book in the Detective Jackie Cooke series. I read it as a stand-alone and loved it. Although it is not required, I will be reading the first book in the series to enjoy the history and continue on with this intense thriller series.

Synopsis:
Detective Jackie Cooke is called to the scene of what initially appears to be a suicide. Jackie recognizes former classmate Claire as the victim. Claire never seemed suicidal. A strange clue is revealed as Jackie investigates. Claire has a roll of twenty dollar bills forced down her throat. In this bizarre case, Jackie is determined to find out who murdered Claire.

This is my first book by Marnie Riches. Detective Jackie Cooke is a single mom struggling to balance her intense career with spending quality time with her children. This aspect of the main character feels real for divorced parents who have felt the guilt of a career versus family situation. While parts of the book follow a typical thriller genre, I appreciate the author's recognition of the difficulties of single parenting.

The Silent Dead is available November 1st. Don't miss this terrific fall read. (5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

A huge thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture, for sharing this wonderful book with me. I am looking forward to book 3.
