This is Book 10 in Lynch’s popular series of police procedurals set in the Lake District featuring D.I. Kelly Porter. As with most ongoing crime fiction series, sufficient background is provided for readers new to the series. I have read and enjoyed a few of the previous ones and plan to read them all.

As the title suggests the case at the centre of this novel involves a sudden and shocking death - or rather deaths. For maximum effect I would suggest reading ‘cold’ as I did.

In ‘Sudden Death’ Lynch effectively uses the landscape of the Lake District including its lakes and mountains. She also highlights the work of the Keswick Mountain Rescue Team.

‘Sudden Death’ was again a solid police procedural combined with elements of a political thriller. Added to this is its well realised characters; especially the dynamics between members of Kelly’s team. One of the pleasures of reading an ongoing series is following the development of its recurring characters.

I was rather hoping that the gorgeous Glynn ‘The Goat’ Cortantes, one of the runners in the Scafell Round fell race, might have a bigger role but alas like Kelly and Kate I only could admire him fleetingly from a distance.

Overall, ‘Sudden Death’ and the D.I. Kelly Porter series overall is what I look for in a police procedural series.

Having read all the books in this series, I knew I was in for an exciting crime thriller, an excellent police procedural with a compassionate and intelligent detective. This book had all that and more. Kelly Porter is reeling from her partner's betrayal, and they are living apart. When a helicopter crashes amidst a fell race on Scarfell Pike, Kelly and her partner mountain rescue expert, Johnny, are forced to work together. In this intriguing political thriller, Kelly has to use all her detective skills to get justice for the innocent victims of this case as powerful forces attempt to suppress the truth.

I love the team dynamic in this story and the balance of the personal and professional life of DI Kelly Porter. The plot is twisty, the pacing perfect, and the outcome believable.

A highly entertaining read as I have come to expect from Rachel Lynch, I have dipped in and out of this series since reading book four, and this one, Sudden Death, is a cracking addition, featuring DI Kelly Porter, and set in the Lake District. This is a series where the subplot concerning Kelly's personal life is equally as compelling as the ongoing investigations, and it isn't essential to have read all of the previous books. In the opening chapters, Kelly is on her way to the crown court in Carlisle when she gets a call from her friend DS Kate Umshaw, ringing to offer support in the high-profile case she's involved in. As the defendant is convicted, Kelly is called to a scene of a chopper that has landed on top of racegoers on Scafell Pike. The two pilots are dead but is it an accident?

Kelly is smart, capable and honest, and a tireless and determined investigator who puts everything she has into her mission to get justice for victims. Kelly is forced to work with her ex, Johnny. Sudden Death is a gripping story of the highest quality and it's wonderfully pacy, dark, and rife with shadiness though with never a dull moment. I am already looking forward to book #11, as well as catching up on those books I've missed.

The story starts as a follow on from the last book with Ian Burton getting sent down. Kelly is not sure what she feels when she sees her ex, Johnny in the courtroom. When news of what sounds like a tragic accident ripples through the court she and Johnny find themselves together doing what they do best. On arrival at Scafell Pike all they can see is total devastation & quickly work together helping the injured until the rest of the emergency services arrive.

The helicopter seems to have lost control and crashed on top of a fell runners race. It also seems that there's only one survivor in the cabin. When they find out who the passengers were they wonder how they knew each other, a high ranking Government Official and a self made Billionaire...

As ever Kelly and the team set quickly to work and uncover that the crash wasn't an accident....As ever fast paced, and gripping I absolutely loved it! I also like seeing glimpses of Kelly's home life and how she interacts with her team. Such a good read!

DI Kelly Porter is called to the scene of an horrific helicopter crash in the picturesque area of Wast Water and Scafell Pike in Cumbria. It is a scene I’d utter devastation as the chopper came down just where some fell runners were competing in a race. In the helicopter the two pilots are dead as is one of the passengers - the notorious and ultra wealthy Bartholomew Kennedy- Craig. The other passenger is the Right Honourable Lord Donald Reilly, high up in the government. He is horribly injured but clinging to life.

The rescue effort is difficult and dangerous and around 17 people are dead. Kelly knows media attention will be intense and she can’t afford to put a foot wrong. With air accident investigators also at the scene it soon becomes apparent that the helicopter was tampered with, or sabotaged. Who would do such a thing? And who was the target?

Kelly’s ex, Johnny, is also there investigating. They had fallen out over his testimony in a trial that just finished but this case brings them closer together again. What is unclear is what Lord Reilly was doing in the chopper with Kennedy-Craig. He was at a nearby climate conference but did not use the hotel room that was booked for him.

The media are soon making lurid assumptions about goings on at Kennedy-Craig’s sumptuous mansion in the area. The wives both seem unaffected by the news. Kelly must peel back the layers of family drama to get to the truth of this sordid case.

I’m not sure why but this book didn’t resonate with me as much as it might have. Possibly there was too much tromping around in the freezing weather and too much helicopter jargon. Nevertheless it was an engaging read and I certainly couldn’t pick whodunit until it was revealed. I do love a book series and I have read all of the previous DI Kelly Porter books and here we are at book no 10. The scenario of a helicopter crash in the Lake District would be bad enough but when it coincides with a fell race it takes the devastation to another level. Oh and then add in that the helicopter had been tampered with and you really have an enquiry to be getting on with. I could carry on with a few more instances of ‘and then’ but suffice to say there are several strands to the enquiry. By the time you get to book 10 there is a feeling of stepping into cosy slippers as you are familiar with the main characters but Rachel Lynch manages to keep it fresh and I hope there are more books to follow.

I love a DI Kelly Porter book and this was no exception to the rule. Full of mystery, tense moments, and some home life reality it is a great story to get into.

After a slow start Sudden Death became an enthralling police procedural.

That sees protagonist DI Kelly Porter and her ex-Johnny called to the mountain side of Scarfell Pike. After a helicopter crashes killing dozens on the ground who were taking part in a fell race and all but one aboard.

And as Kelly and Johnny rush to the scene. They are faced with utter devastation; and learn the two men aboard the helicopter were the Right Honourable Lord Reilly and a billionaire Tory donor Bartholomew Kennedy-Craig. And as Kelly and her team at Eden House are tasked with finding out what happened and if the crash was accidental or sabotage. The pressure from the media, the victims families, Home Office and Prime Minister mounts.

Then it's revealed the cause of the crash was sabotage.

But who would want to sabotage the helicopter and why were these two men even together?

And by answering those questions. The team learn some dark and disturbing truths and find a killer I wasn't expecting.

And with intriguing characters and a beautiful setting. This is a series I want to read more off, and it's a story I would happily recommend to others.

Runners and bystanders are caught in the devastation. This is the scene that greets DI Kelly Porter. She attempts to coordinate the rescue efforts, though it’s clear many won’t make it, including occupants of the helicopter. Three are dead, and the fourth is badly injured. When it emerges that the survivor is none other than the Right Honourable Lord Donald Reilly, and the person who chartered the flight was notorious billionaire Bartholomew Kennedy-Craig, the media frenzy is intense. When it is learned that the helicopter had been tampered with, Kelly and her team can’t afford to make a single mistake.
The tenth outing for Kelly & whilst it could easily be read on its own, I’ve loved how the main & some secondary characters have developed over the series. A fast paced, well written, page turner which drew me in from the start. I love how the author weaves various strands together & this is a complicated case. There are twists & turns in this well researched thriller. There are a couple of loose ends but this is usual & I’m sure they'll be addressed in the next book

Sudden Death is book 10 in the DI Kelly Porter, but any similarities to the previous books are left firmly at the door. Although the characters and locations are familiar, the action in this book centres around a horrendous helicopter crash and its aftermath.

The description of the crash is so well written that you feel completely immersed in what's unfolding, both on the ground and in the air. At times I had to remember to breathe! What follows is no less calm, as Kelly and her team fight to find the truth of what happened. There are multiple parties involved in the investigation, which hampers it at times, plus the politics of having a government minister on board.

We don't lose out on the character storylines in Sudden Death, with DI Porter and he ex Johnny being forced to work together. How will things pan out for the once-loved-up couple?

Sudden Death is another excellent installment in the series but is equally great to read as a stand alone book.

DI Kelly Porter is waiting for the verdict at a trial that has torn her & her lover, Johnny, apart when they both receive news that a private helicopter has crashed on the hills above the Lakes. Both being part of Mountain rescue they set off at speed for the site. Not only has the helicopter crashed, but it happened as there was a hill race going on & many of the runners have been killed or injured. It transpires that a government minister was on board as well as a billionaire whose reputation is far from squeaky clean- why were they together? When an observer reveals that it he doubts this was an accident Kelly is involved in a high profile case- however the families are not exactly helpful. What can of worms is she going to uncover.

I have enjoyed this series from the start although somehow I missed the last one! However I enjoyed getting back into Kelly's world. This was an exciting police procedural that as always left me waiting for the next instalment. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.

One in a series which was new to me this book was a good one - the story, the
characterizations, the twists and turns and very importantly the setting.

In the beautiful calm oasis of the Lake District group of fell runners are on a competitive run. out of the blue a whirring helicopter descends, totally out of control
spinning to the ground in a fiery end. The death toll is heavy, the investigation
into the crash is high powered. One of the persons being ferried is a peer in tge House
of Lords, the other is a millionaire with a very unsavory reputation.

DI Kelly is in charge of a highly volatile case - as more and more lurid details are revealed
the Home Office looks for damage control and the businessman's family also has an agenda of their own, a cover up as well trying to hide that the remote area was used to provide sexual favors
involving minors. Kelly is caught in the middle, trying to find justice for the seventeen dead,
especially when it turned out to be deliberate sabotage.

The story was intriguing because it reflects the politics in every country - the corrupt and
wealthy try to get away with literally everything and very often times succeeding. Very few
Police forces can face the wrath and weight of two forces and come out victorious.

I will be looking out for more books in this series.

As usual in my reviews, I will not rehash the plot (there are already reviews like that out there if that's what you're looking for).

I've read all the previous "Kelly Porter" novels and always enjoyed them, so I was delighted to receive an ARC of this latest novel (apparently the 10th in the series!).

Although I've read all the other books in the series, I feel that this one would work fine as a standalone too, as there is plenty of background information about the main characters and references to help with previous events and relationships.

I enjoyed the multi-layered plot - the book starts with the trial of a suspect from the end of the last novel, but quickly ramps up after a dramatic helicopter crash on a Lakeland mountainside. It quickly becomes apparent that there is more to those involved than meets the eye...

Alongside the main plot events we learn more about the latest developments in the relationships of various main characters - which is an added strand to the tale.

I love the beautiful and dramatic Lake District settings featured in these novels, and as usual really enjoyed Rachel Lynch's plotting and writing style. Looking forward to reading more in the series!

Rachel lynch's books combine the majestic beauty of the Lake District with the difficulties faced by the mountain rescue teams facing the elements. This is intensified in Sudden Death by a major incident when a helicopter crashes. Added to this there is a VIP MP on board. Kelly and her estranged boyfriend Johnny are among the first to arrive on the scene. and they find there are multiple casualties as there was a race being run which attracted many spectators. I admire the extensive research the author must have done into helicopters and what would cause them to fail but I am entirely with Kelly and having once briefly flown in one have vowed never to do it again. Having read the details of what causes them to crash that vow is reinforced! Kelly's personal life is also visited, as her growing relationship with her dad, Ted and her doubts about whether she and Johnny still have a future

As the trial of Ian Burton is coming to a close, DI Kelly Porter’s phone starts to ring informing her that a helicopter has crashed of the Fells at Scafell Pike causing death and injury to the occupants, those taking part in the Fell Race and many of the bystanders. As Kelly attempts to discover the reason why a state-of-the-art helicopter should crash, the investigators involved in searching for clues are hindered by the worsening weather conditions.

‘Sudden Death’ is the gripping story of a helicopter crash that becomes more complex as DI Kelly Porter’s Serious Crime team look into each aspect to ascertain whether it’s purely accidental or a deliberate act. A great deal of in-depth technical research has gone into the working of helicopters for which I congratulate the author, and the vivid descriptions of the severe injuries sustained by those in the crash and those nearby has been written with thought and sensitivity. Although it can be read as a standalone, it’s better if the previous novel ‘Lying Ways’ is read prior to ‘Sudden Death’ as it will give the reader a greater understanding of Kelly’s private life and the reason for the estrangement between herself and her partner Johnny. I’ve read every DI Kelly Porter book from the very first and thoroughly enjoyed them all, and now we’ve reached the tenth I’ll be so disappointed if this should the last in the series.

I’ve read a few books in this series and always enjoy them.
Kelly is called to help when a helicopter crashes in the Lake District.
Johnny is with her when she gets the call so they both head out to see if they can help as there was a running event taking place near the crash site.
It soon transpires that a politician was on board the helicopter and the incident leaves him fighting for his life.
Kelly is asked to investigate the crash and it soon becomes clear it was not an accident.
The owner of the helicopter has passed away but his family seem to know more than they’re letting on.
This is a gripping crime thriller that I’d highly recommend.

Part of a series, though reads fine as a stand alone. I have read others in this series and it is good to catch up with Kelly and her collegues again.
What starts here as a helicopter crash, becomes more complicated and the complexity of the case is gradually revealed. I have grown to like the characters more, the more I read about them. I also love the Lakeland setting.

with the court case about to finish kelly and her partner johnny are on opposing sides and it hasnt been easy for both of them...but when an helicopter goes down on scafell pike its all hands on deck to reach the survivors if any and help in any way they can for the rescue mission, but also knowing that the weather is about to turn for the worse

this book is action packed right from the get go and you cant put it down...and the investigation keeps taking different turns that lead to some unexpected places....which doesnt help when the only surviving victim from the crash is high up in government and in the company of a billionaire of disrepute

this series just gets better and better and i cant wait for the next one in this amazing series

I felt for DI Kelly and her frustration with her supervisors. I was confused about her relationship with Johnny. She did have a great team. Found it to be an interesting plot-complex and convoluted. 4 stars
