I never knew I needed this in my life and now im hooked. I was gripped all the way through and couldn't put it down. It is spicy and brutal and I need more of this in my life immediately
Mermaid romance MAY be my new favorite sub genre. I've never read anything like this and i was CAPTIVATED. The beginning started a bit slow but once the story got going it never slowed down. I really enjoyed meeting and learning about these characters and diving into this world!
This book was so good! I really wanted to read something to get into a Halloween/spooky mood and this hit the spot! I loved the romance, the mystery, and this whole take on sirens/mermaids. I really enjoyed all the characters, including the background ones, they were all clearly fleshed out and had their own personalities that endeared me to them. 10/10 I had such a fun time reading and I am very excited to see if a sequel for this is in the works!
A fun paranormal romance between a fishing captain and a woman who's unwillingly becoming a human-eating mermaid. The premise is a bit dark, but overall this actually felt pretty cozy and light.
I really enjoyed the seafaring accuracy in this one--the details of the boats felt very true and were not overly romanticized, and I could tell the author either has experience at sea or has definitely done her research. I also enjoyed the twist of the female love interest as the monster rather than the male.
Content warnings: sexual content, grief, death, cannibalism
A wonderful and very original mix of fantasy, romance, and horror. Killian was extremely likable and I really felt for Lorelei. Definitely interested in more books!
I received this ARC from ARC provided by Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op.
Wow, simply wow! I finished this in 2 days! Not a typical story about mermaids. You get mystery, humour, a little spice. Lorelei is the only survivor of a ship wreck. But how does she survive?! And saved by the very dashing Killian. Lorelei finds herself changing, in more ways than one. Her relationship with Killian blooms.
Lorelei accepting what she now is, can her secret stay a secret? But his nosy Ex Carrie, is she going to cause problems further along? The reporter? Can Lorelei really deny the call of the deep?
I cannot wait until I can get reading the next book. My biggest question is. What is Carrie gonna do?!
Call to the Deep is about Lorelei, the lone survivor of a shipwreck. She develops bouts of sleepwalking into the sea and odd nightmares after being pulled from the water. Turns out, the ocean calls to her because she's a people-eating mermaid. The walls start to close in around her as the people in her life find out what she is.
I honestly enjoyed this book so much. I love mermaids and haven't encountered them much in the many fantasy books I've devoured. I was a bit surprised with the setting of this book being present day US, but I think it worked well for the plot later on. I especially loved that this type of mermaid was the people-eating sort and not some fragile, hapless, sun-bathing on rocks, singing-just-for-fun type. It added danger to the dynamics between Lorelei and Killian's romantic relationship. I've only read books where the "dangerous" creature is always the male and the girl has to choose to stick around, so this was a refreshing change. I also really enjoyed the marine conservation aspect of the story.
I do think there were bits in the book that made me pause and frown. Sometimes the characters speak in the way a person would write, instead of speaking "normally." There was also a bit of a pacing issue for me personally--the beginning and end were a bit too dragged out for my taste. But overall, the book was well rounded and I did like it a lot. Anyone who wants to read a mermaid book, should read this!
Thank you to NetGalley and City Owl Publishing for providing me with an eARC of the book for my honest review!
