A meticulous yet compelling Le Guinian exploration of an isolated community’s collapse of self, myth and family after it adopts a young foreign boy into its ranks. The orphan brings a strange uncanny intimacy to the people and tells alien stories which shake the foundations of their beliefs. A simmering, magical polyphonic mystery that was a pleasure to read.
