Ridiculous To Sublime..
From the ridiculous to the sublime, from murder to mayhem and from the scandal to the secrets - this little tome is an enjoyable and entertaining diversion, a trip around Britain like you’ve never had before. Plenty of little gems and nuggets of information, useless or otherwise, but always interesting and usually of the wierd and the wonderful variety.
Fascinating, hilarious, and truly bizarre, Paul Donnelley takes the reader round Britain, exploring the odd and little known facts that make this country such a wonderfully weird place to be. Like a mad Bill Bryson, this is excellent fun and will be a great stocking filler for christmas
First up, a big big thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read this one.
However, after several pages, I am deducing that this one just works much better as a physical copy than as an ebook. It was just one wall of text on my ereader and only thanks to some things being in CAPS was I able to see what was a new paragraph/new part. While at points very interesting, it just didn't work for me. With books like this I would like to flip around the pages + having less of a wall of text would also be nice.
Since it wasn't the book's text fault that I DNF-ed this one I will give it 3 stars.
Firstly can only say the detail in this book is second to none
Secondly also have to say there may be a bit too much at times, although interesting to know where all these things happened I am not sure if full postal addresses and phone numbers are needed for every single person mentioned ( just as a reference Mary Whitehouse’s phone number from where she once lived is not relevant tbh ) and also every date of birth and marriage and seemingly any date the author felt relevant to add for me was a bit too much, still can’t knock the effort and hours that went into this
When first started the book ( the book is in sections like music, TV, killers , crimes etc ) I was bowled over by the Boots paragraph and the Harrods few pages and thought the book was going to be of real interest….and it was but for me only up to a point, I enjoyed some of the chapters more than others and found the short sharp paragraphs better than the essay type entries on certain subjects
There seemed to be an over abundance of gay men’s wrongdoings recorded but maybe I am being over sensitive as it is called ‘Notorious’
None the less I did pick up facts and figures and quotes and other things and this author certainly knows his stuff which made it a mainly worthwhile read
A brilliant interesting and informative book. Great for anyone who likes pub quizzes, the office know it all or someone who likes interesting information.
Ideal for Secret Santa present or the annoying relative.
It made me smile and hubby got fed up of me reading out loud different snippets that particular interested or amused me
