This book was the framework for modern mysteries, and probably slapped when it came out, it’s a classic! Having read many mysteries, it was a familiar trope, but it was a fun ride and I even guessed the murderer correctly! A beautiful edition of this classic book!
A deluxe edition implies the format is beyond a mere paperback. A reader would look for an elegant binding, touch worthy paper and embellished end papers. Obviously none of this would be available for the e-book user.
Therefore I cannot comment on the desirability of this edition. Rather, I encourage any reader to pursue this work. Christie set the literary world on its ear with this novel. She did it then and still
does it today. Cover be darned. Read away and find why Hercule Poirot is one of the giants in detective literature.
Full disclosure: I read this ARC in ebook format in exchange for an honest review.
Reread on Oct 22, 2023:
Still a well-crafted and brilliant page-turner after all these years. I wanted to see how it would feel to read this knowing what I know and it's definitely a very different experience. I loved spotting the clues and red herrings I missed the first time round. An immensely enjoyable read that I sped through! Truly a classic.
No added or bonus content in this Deluxe Edition, but I look forward to flipping through the physical copy.
Original review in Sep 2017:
This is a fantastic story in all aspects and a must-read for everyone. I would have given it a perfect 5-star rating if not for the fact that I correctly guessed who the murderer was (hate it when that happens because I want to be mindblown). Somehow, for me, it got increasingly obvious towards the end even if I did miss some of the clues in the beginning.
Fun read and great twist to the story. Loved it. Just when I thought I had solved it, it surprised me. Highly recommend!
I love Agatha Christie and I loved this edition of Roger Ackroyd. I think I'll definitely be buying this edition to add to my collection.
Never would I have guessed the outcome of this novel, though I was carefully analysing the hints and the details in sentences before and after the coma! If you think you can cope with Agathe Christie’s whodunnits and versed in solving her plots, I invite you to read this novel, because she’ll make you feel like a first-time-Christie-reader who’s getting face-slapped with an unexpected plot twist. Thoroughly embedding details, she made me think I understand her story, but taught me better by revealing the murderer at the end, whom I had thought of least to be the malicious. I feel privileged to have read this novel, my most favourite whodunnit lit that consumed all my brain cells!
Thanks a thousand times to NetGalley for this fantastic ARC in exchange for my honest review!
The Poirot books are my least favorite of Christie's books, but I really did enjoy this one! Even though I managed to guess the killer, I had no idea what the motive might have been, and still was surprised at all of the reveals at the end! Christie certainly is the Queen of Mystery for a reason!
I remember reading my first Agatha Christie novel, And Then There Were None, when I was too young to be reading Agatha Christie novels, or so said my school librarian. And I was hooked. I wanted to read more, I wanted other mysterious books that I was too young for (Rebecca, by Daphne du Maurier) and I am forever grateful to that librarian, who beyond a comment here or there always let me leave the library with any book that piqued my interest. All this to say that Agatha Christie never lost her magic in my eyes and I was thrilled to revisit her with this book.
I am an avid mystery fan that has just discovered Agatha Christie, and specifically Hercule Poirot! It has been so much fun to devour these classics! When mystery readers ask me what I've been reading, I have such a good time talking to them about a character they already know well, or talking them into picking up a well-loved character they don't know yet or only think they know.
We will definitely be purchasing this deluxe edition for our collection!
I understand Agatha kristie is a mystery classic but i has never read anything by hear until now.
The new deluxe edition cover makes a classic look modern. It’s beautiful and helps bring this story to new readers.
This book has opened the door for me to continue reading her books and finding new mystery favorites.
The Murder Mystery of Roger Ackroyd slowly brings together the stories of the characters and unravels their truths. This eventually leads to discover the murderer with a few plot twists.
I did find I had to go back and reread some of the characters descriptions as it was a bit hard keeping track of everyone and the alibis.
There isn't much more praise I could give to this book other than to say that The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is pure mystery novel perfection. I love Agatha Christie and even if there are elements of her stories that may seem a little dated to some readers, I always think about the time in which it was written and how inventive, shocking and fresh it would have been to read this around the date it was first published. On top of this, from a female author! This was a re-read for me but I can never resist going back to some of the classics and this has to be one of my Top 3. If you haven't had the chance to read it yet - what are you waiting for!
a classic. You can't go wrong with Agatha. She was the queen bee of murder mystery and I always enjoy picking up new writing from her.
Excellent book. A true classic and the reason I fell in love with Agatha Christie. Deluxe edition is worth getting for a fan like myself
There’s a reason why Agatha Christie is the queen of mystery. Even with this very first book in the Hercule Poirot series the book that gave us one of the greatest literary detectives, she keeps the reader guessing right up to the very end.
This is what a classic is supposed to me like. It isn’t merely something old–it’s something timeless. The fact that one can read this book nearly a century after it was first published and still be delighted, amused, and surprised by it, still find it exciting and entertaining (and only a teensy-weensy bit dated) is precisely what put The Murder of Roger Ackroyd at the top of many (almost all) lists of top mysteries of all time. Well, that and the famous plot twist at the end.
I love Agatha Christie. An enormously talented, endlessly inventive writer with a. great eye for detail and an astute understanding of psychology, time after time she has crafted mysteries that wow. They certainly wow me each and every time. She’s been a source of entertainment, excitement, and even inspiration.
Few authors working today in the ever-so popular thriller genre that can thrill as much as Dame Agatha. This book is a perfect example of it. Presumably it’s only a matter of time until Branagh (the most unlikely albeit tremendously dedicated latest adaptor of her works) will bring this one to screen.
Wish the deluxe edition cover was available on GR, because it’s awesome. As is, will go with generic but serviceable.
A great read. A real classic. Recommended. Thanks Netgalley.
I have to credit Nina de Gramont’s The Christie Affair with the resurgence of my own interest in Dame Agatha, and I don’t imagine I’m the only one. There are quite a number of her mysteries I’ve missed through the years, and somehow The Murder of Roger Ackroyd was one. Devoted Christie readers usually tap Roger Ackroyd as her best, or at least a favorite, and I was eager to see why. Christie did not disappoint.
For this investigation, Hercule Poirot is without his friend Hastings, so playing the role of sidekick is Dr. James Sheppard. Dr. Sheppard lives with his spinster sister Caroline, and their caustic back and forth adds much humor to the unfolding of the plot. Caroline fancies herself an amateur detective and has an army of friends, servants and spies that carry her inside information, which irritates her brother endlessly. The cast of supporting characters is full of the quirks and hidden motives that are Christie hallmarks. Christie’s plot devices have become so ubiquitous that other writers have copied many of her ideas, which would be the only way you’ll guess the murderer.
This novel contains so many clever twists, turns and red herrings that it will hold up well to multiple readings. I’m already planning to go back to find some of the clues I missed. Pushkin Press has issued this lovely Art Deco deluxe edition just in time for the holidays, and it will make a perfect gift for the mystery fan in your life.
This might have been my favorite Agatha Christie book. I was really foiled by the writing style playing into the end of the novel. I thought her writing skills were really magnified in that sense. At the same time I didn’t love that you couldn’t necessarily put together the clues themselves. Most of the clues that exonerated suspects were done behind closed doors and exposed late in the book. I also had trouble following the different characters and their place in the story. I had to refer back multiple times for first and last names in addition to how they were related to the victim. Eventually it came together but it took some time.
I absolutely loved the artwork for this addition. I’m super bummed that it didn’t show up on my kindle because it really is a beautiful edition.

One evening the wealthy Roger Ackroyd is discovered slumped in his armchair, a knife buried in his heart. It is the start of a murder case that spurs the inhabitants of the sleepy English village of King's Abbot to feverish speculation. The local police are perplexed, but soon a recently retired Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, joins the investigation. The truth he uncovers will shock even the most imaginative of the village gossips.
Agatha Christie never disappoints it was brilliant. Although I've read it before but i enjoyed re reading it.
Thanks to NetGalley and Pushkin Press for giving me an advance copy.
Classic Christie, I really enjoyed this mystery which I hadn't read before. It would be a good first Christie for someone looking to give it a try.
Excellent mystery, Lots of red herrings. I’ve read many Agatha Christie mysteries and had never read this one,
