This book was everything I wanted it to be. It had me turned pages without even realizing. It was so good!
This is a classic, it was great reading it again!
I'd like to thank the publisher, Pushkin Vertigo and Netgalley for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Agatha Christie is truly the greatest mystery author of all time. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is one of her best. It is a classic through and through. Highly recommended to all mystery fans. This is an Agatha Christie must-read!
There is not a lot that I can say that hasn’t already been said regarding The Murder of Roger Ackroyd so I will keep this short. When I was fourteen, I was gifted a paperback copy that was missing it’s cover and very dog-eared. It was my first Agatha Christie and I devoured it. In my estimation it is Christie’s best and remains my favorite to this day. The first time you read it is all about the discovery of an exquisitely plotted ingenious mystery. For the second reading, and the many that follow, it’s all about picking out all of the things that you missed in each prior read. Following the clues along with Poirot is such fun, even though you know exactly what is going to happen.
There are so many things I find enjoyable in this book, and make me keep coming back. The pacing is quick and the chapters relatively short. The narrative flows along, allowing the reader to sail through in a short time. One might think of this as a downside, but Christie does a marvelous job at doling out information, keeping the reader totally engaged. The dialogue is an intelligent mix of serious conversation with witty banter. And, no matter how many times I read this, the ending, while no longer a surprise, is amazing!
In a word, it is quite simply sublime.
Although I love Agatha Christie's novels, the Poirot books have never been my favorite. Controversial, I know, but I just can't stand the Belgian detective's high opinion of himself. In the case of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, though, the mystery was inventive enough and the detective de-centered enough that I enjoyed it. I did guess who the murderer was before the reveal, but I imagine that's because many writers since have used the same idea! All in all a solid Christie novel.
A perfect classic, I really enjoyed this one as the first Christie novel I've read, and now I need to read more of her work!
This was actually my first Agatha Christie and I absolutely loved it! It had me on the edge of my seat the whole time!
Agatha Christie got me into reading mystery, yes, but also just got me addicted to reading as a habit. After Murder on the Orient Express, this is my favorite. Brilliantly written, it really is so so much fun and I completely lost myself reading it again even though I knew how it was going to end this time. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to get into mystery!
What a pleasure to be reminded why Agatha Christie is the once and forever Queen of Mystery. It's been years since I first read this one but it was one of the books that started my mystery reading craze. Even knowing "who done it", it was a delight to renew my acquaintance with Roger Ackroyd. I still found myself fully engrossed in looking for clues that I surely missed my first time reading, appreciating the adroit cleverness of the red herrings and, of course, Hercule Poirot's "little grey cells" as he steadily, expertly identified the killer. Maybe it's time I re-read the classics, huh?
I'm certainly not going to rehash the plot details here. If you haven't read the book or have simply forgotten who was guilty, the joy of this classic is in experiencing it as it unfolds to the startling conclusion. Given the volumes that have been written about not just this book alone but Agatha Christie, let's face it, there's little new I can add other than to echo that it deserves the accolades it has received and to be read and reread and enjoyed over and over. After all, it set the standard, especially for locked room mysteries.
Kudos to #PushkinPress - #PushkinVertigo for reissuing this deluxe, hard covered edition. It'll make the perfect gift for your mystery loving friends or, well, yourself. Thanks #NetGalley for letting me know about it.
If you know me, you know that there is NOTHING I love more than Agatha Christie, and particularly her Hercule Poirot series. This is one of Christie’s most iconic, insanely genius works, and this hardcover edition is too beautiful to pass up. The timeless tale that changed Christie’s career begins when the wealthy Roger Ackroyd is murdered in his armchair with a knife to the back. Hercule Poirot is on the case, and in the end…. Your jaw will be hanging open. This is the invention of the untrustworthy narrator. Absolutely iconic.
Always fun to re-read the stories of Dame Christie. While not my favorite of her books, this one does have a twist to the story that will catch those unfamiliar with the story off guard. Poirot is asked to help find the killer of Roger Ackroyd, it is the downfall of the murderer. Good story and one I highly recommend. Her books are classics and do not seem to age.
