Did you know that there is a place in the western Pacific Ocean that is an incredibly 36,000 feet deep and has been visited by fewer people than have visited the moon? It is as technically hard to visit the Mariana Trench as it is to fly into space. I needed to know more about this wondrous trench, so I found Deep, Deep Down and got the lowdown.

It is clear a scientist wrote this book, because it methodically presents the details about the depth, the trench's inhabitants, and its alien environment with crisp illustrations to bring it all alive. Whether you're 7 or 70, you'll certainly share in the amazement that comes with learning about how any creature could live seven miles below sea level.

Deep, Deep Down taught me about some interesting creatures I’ve never heard of that inhabit the Mariana Trench. I had no idea how enormous it is or that studying the unique habits gives us clues to learn about how life can survive in such adversarial conditions. My middle schoolers will be fascinated by this one.

Deep, Deep Down
The Secret Underwater Poetry of the Mariana Trench
by Lydia Lukidis
Earc: NetGalley
Publisher : Capstone Editions
Publication Date : 01 Jan 2023
Genre :Children's Non fiction, Science

This book reads like an evocative, mesmerising poem, describing a truly mysterious part of our planet. I would recommend schools to buy this for their libraries. This book would work so well for children that have difficulty with reading, or difficulty with focussing on long texts. But it is also wonderful for advanced readers. Every word counts, Every word seems to have been chosen lovingly for both its descriptiveness, as well as its sound. (And would work as a book to read aloud, too.)
At no point does the text feel patronising, as some books for children, and particularly book for children with reading difficulties do. A reader of any age, and of any reading ability feels welcomed to join this underwater adventure.
The illustrations are so beautiful, and could be read by themselves (without understanding the text). It would still provide a beautiful dive down to a magical place, and a meeting with fascinating creatures.

Deep deep down by Lydia Lukidis is a beautifully illustrated book about the life and conditions at different depths of the Mariana Trench. I read this book to all of my students and each enjoyed it in different ways. My kindergartener loved the bright, fun illustrations, my second grader loved learning about the different species that can exist in that hostile environment, and my fifth grader loved the section at the end that gave additional information about the Mariana Trench, the scientists who study it, and why it is important to understand. I will be adding this book to my school shelf and recommending it to other teachers in my co-op.

So cool! Honestly, I’ve always been equal parts fascinated and terrified of what lives deep within the Mariana Trench. This picture book taught me about creatures I never even heard of! With it’s poetic writing, and beautiful illustrations, this is definitely a book I would recommend for early STEM readers.

I particularly loved the fact boxes about the creatures themselves, especially how even within its science-y wording, one can find the word Poop more than once.

Thank you so very much to Netgalley and Capstone publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book!

Deep, Deep Down by Lydia Lukidis is a phenominal read. A great story filled with exciting knowledge of the Mariana Trench. This book breaks down the trench with information for each depth and who may live there.
The illustrations of the sea life throughout the story are beautiful. The simple yet captivating details and colors of the sea life are amazing. The darks spots of the page pay true to how deep and dark it can get down there, never truly knowing what may lurk in those spots. My favorite part of this book is the little facts of a few sea life throughout the story. You find yourself reading about these animals, learning something new. The back pages of the book have a "Did You Know" section, gives you a little more knowledge about the Mariana Trench.

Great informative read for curious minds and the beautiful illustrations make this a must-read book. I will recommend this again and again. Thank you, Publisher, Author and NetGalley for the ARC.

Deep, Deep Down
The Secret Underwater Poetry of the Mariana Trench
by Lydia Lukidis
This book is magnificent! Nothing like the intrigue of the Mariana Trench to excite and fascinate people, especially kids! The secretive, overwhelming trench, and it's hidden occupants, spur the imagination! This book breaks down the trench into zones and who lives where.
This book has incredible lifelike artwork and heightens the interest to what else may live in the dark depths. The book also has small information boxes in most pages with additional information about what is showing.
The awesome art together with the info makes this a tremendous find! Can't recommend this enough!
I want to thank the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read this terrific book!

This book is absolutely stunning! The lyrical language, the beautiful illustrations, the fantastic creatures…my second grader devoured it. The book has a rhythmic feel as we go below the surface down to the Mariana Trench to explore the sea life at the bottom. There are several pages giving information about particular creatures, plus a page discussing the trench itself and its importance. This has the perfect amount of information for an early elementary reader, and my kindergartener also enjoyed looking at the pictures and hearing the story.

Thank you to NetGalley and Capstone for the ARC of this beautiful book in exchange for my honest opinion!

"There are no monsters in sight." Love that! I was obsessed with deep sea creatures as a kid and this is right up my alley. I really appreciate the art and the direction of this story but I wish there were more opportunities to explain certain science facts, like what TMAO is. It says it's a special substance, but what is it? A protein? I'm sure a young reader would love to know. A pronunciation guide immediately on the page would have also been helpful. Me as a thirty-something-year-old had to read and re-read "xenophyophorea." The glossary at the end doesn't even mention it, and the glossary is missing the pronunciation for "biodiversity." As a result, I'm not sure which demographic this is for. If it's for children who love picture books, the art is incredibly detailed, but the text is a bit dense. If it's for advanced readers who love science and want to learn about deep sea creatures, the information is not quite there. I like the concept, but I'm not sure I'd know who to recommend this to.

This is a good book for a young readers. It is a little long. But it has a rhythmic tone to it. So I it would be good for winding down the end of the day. It has a lot of interesting facts and educational features about the Mariana Trench and other sea life. The illustrations are beautiful.
