This is book 8 in a series but it is very good. DCI Jane Phillips is back in Major Crimes and in involved in the most gruesome strange murder investigation she has ever come across. A famous sports figure has been found at a church wrapped in a white wrap surrounded by flowers but the weird thing is that his heart is missing. The pressure Jane is under is immense and ramps even higher when the killer strikes again. This victim is the same as last time..posed the exact same way. When Jane consults Dr. Harris she is floored with what she discovers. Can Jane solve the mystery before anyone else dies?
SCI Jane Phillips is back, and is immediately plunged into a worrying case. Fast paced and exciting, this is a good read.
A high profile victim is found murdered and the victim’s body is posed for everyone to see. DCI Jane Philips is given the case. This case is given the highest priority because of the famous victim. Before Jane begins searching for clues, another victim is discovered. The victim is found the in the same posed position as the first victim. Jane teams up with a profiler and together they need to find connection between the two victims, before the killer strikes again. A fast paced thriller that is wildly entertaining and an amazing plot, great characters. A thrilling story from start to finish.

Jane is bad butt in the intense thriller of cat and mouse game between the hero’s in blue and the evil that haunts the knight. The plot of the story hooked me right away at the beginning. The lead character Jane Philip plowed through this book with her tenacity of a woman who was in control of her emotions and critical thinking. I thought that the character were engaging and very entertaining. The end of the book was supreme.
Wow
the entire time i was reading it (i WHIPPED through it in roughly 4 hours) my heart was pounding and i had so many theories and questions. if you love insanely well written and fast paced books with crazy plot twists and well developed, shady, and secretive characters - PLEASE READ THIS !!!!!
Ive not read any books by thiscauthor and this one is a good way into the series. It certainly didn't detract from my enjoyment so it can definitely be read as a standalone. The discovery of a popular character with his heart removed certainly grabbed my attention. It was an intriguing read and I was desperate to discover the whonand why .
I cannot believe this is the first book I read from this series! What an amazing find! Since it's book 8 of a series which is part of the Unlimited collection, I am delighted and very excited to start on the series from the beginning as this everything I love in a police procedural collection; Strong female DI in Major Crimes with very good secondary characters and an interesting well described geographic location (in this instance Manchester).
I am very excited to have discovered this series and look forward to getting lost in Jane Phillips' world of mystery solving. Absolutely fabulous.
Yes the storyline gets macabre at times, it's a serial killer case after all but the whole storyline is very enjoyable to read.
This is another good thriller featuring DCI Jean Phillips back at work investigating the discovery of a dead body shrouded with a white shawl and flowers. I would recommend this excellent book to anyone.
I absolutely loved this gripping and addictive story. Compelling and intricate, the depraved plan of a killer falls into place. Phillips and her team are fun, serious, hard working and determined to stop the killer from reaching his ultimate, grisly goal. The characters are well defined, the plot, complete with twists and tuns, leads you thru a terrifying tale of murder and intrigue. I gave up trying to solve this and followed the clues that led me through the suspects to find the eventual killer with the twist that was the sting in the tail. I couldn't put this down, I wanted the conclusion, hopefully the best one for all involved. A really great read!
A well plotted and gripping police procedural, it kept me guessing and turning pages.
The fleshed out characters are likeable, the serial killer is interesting and a bit frightening
I enjoyed this story and it's recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

3.5 hearts
The Detective Jane Phillips series continues to evolve. Jane has been on leave for months with her new boyfriend Adam. Now she and Adam are going back to work and have to figure out how to navigate work life balance with critical, demanding jobs. Jane still has her boss, Carter, to deal with all the administrative and politics things which would hamper her ability to solve cases. Her team is happy to have her back.
The case is a serial killer. The connection between cases is obvious in the staging of the bodies but not in the reasoning or how the victims are found. The team does their work. The relationships are all resettled with Jane back in charge and deftly solving a difficult case in the end.
Jane's focus on her personal life felt weird. She did not do a great job of compartmentalizing work at work and home at home. Jane seemed kind of like she was watching both lives but not participating in them. So I didn't get the emotional connection to either here.
I enjoy this series a lot and look forward to further cases with Jane more settled and participating in her life and work.
This is an exciting read.
Good old fashioned detective work, discovering clues along the way, and trying to stop a serial killer from murdering the next victim.
The characters are likeable. It is easy to see why this is the 8th book in a series. It works well. While this is part of a series, the story can be read as a standalone.
The plot is interesting, the writing is concise, the pace is just right, and the mystery behind the murders is intriguing. This is an enjoyable and satisfying read.
Disclosure: I received a free review copy via NetGalley.
A killer with a blood lust that is centuries old
After a lengthy leave of absence, DCI Jane Phillips is back in Major Crimes, neck deep in the most macabre murder investigation of her career.
The naked body of a famous sportsman has been laid out in a churchyard, wrapped in a white shawl, surrounded by flowers. Stranger still, his heart is missing.
With such a high profile victim, the pressure to find the murderer is instant and extreme. And it only increases when the killer strikes again – leaving behind another mutilated body, posed in exactly the same way.
With no obvious connection between the two victims, Phillips turns to profiler Dr. Siobhan Harris. Can she help to identify the perpetrator or discover the motive behind these brutal murders?
But no one could have prepared Phillips for what the doctor is about to reveal.
Everything points to a killer on a mission, and a body count that’s likely to double within days – unless Phillips can stop the murderous psychopath, hell bent on satisfying his own Deadly Craving.
This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series!
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story.
Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down.
Can't wait to read more of these.
Recommend reading.
I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary review.
DCI Jane Phillips and her team have a rather nasty new criminal to catch in this latest story. Murder victims have been found wrapped and posed amid white flowers… and body organs missing. Different organs for each victim, mind you. So yes, this is a pretty dark killer that they are determined to find as soon as possible. Of all the cases to come back to after a leave of absence,
Jane never expected to be hunting a ritual killer like this. It only makes her warier of returning to the force full-time.
But her detectives have great faith in their DCI and will do whatever it takes to ensure she’s strong enough to catch this murderer. Jones and Bovalino offer their usual comic relief and the profiler Siobhan Harris is back to offer assistance. Anyone who commits atrocities like this must have some serious psychological issues, so the team really needs her help.
For me, the darker the better, so I really enjoyed the disturbing elements of this book. As crazy as it sounds, you can almost understand the killer’s reasoning! I couldn’t wait to see who was behind the crimes and how Jane and her team would catch them. It’s an entertaining story that’s a bit macabre at times, but that makes it perfect for this time of year!
While this is the 8th book in this series, each book packs a punch as a stand alone! DCI Jane Phillips comes back to work just in time to catch a most unusual murder. A celebrity victim insure that Jane has the scrutiny of the media outlets as well as the "higher ups". But Jane and her seasoned team have been there before and don't let the unwanted attention affect their actions. They know their jobs and are very good at them.
OMJ Ryan has developed the characters in this series as a team and their growth with each book takes the reader deep into some of the best police procedurals I've found. If you love real characters and suspense in your mysteries, you've found them in the Detective Jane Phillips series.
Murders are occurring, the victims posed in a ritualistic manner. Wrapped in a white shawl, with an arch of flowers.
The first victim is a famous boxer, with his heart missing.
DCI Jane Phillips and her team are sickened by each murder, every body has a missing body part, and the race is on to find out what motivates the serial killer. A profiler is brought in to assist.
Great story line, it flowed, was a quick read.
This is my first novel by this author, it kept me on the edge of my seat, which I do like, and I am a fan of a strong female lead in a police procedural.
I hope that the many, many spelling typos will be fixed before this goes on the shelves. I really am a stickler for good spelling and grammar.
Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Fast paced, gripping and utterly compelling. It was twisty and unpredictable and I didn't want to put it down. A fantastic read.
I am a fan of this series and this is a strong entry. DCI Jane Phillips is back at work after the trauma of her last big case. Unfortunately this latest case is no less traumatic for the team.
I don't want to spoil anything but it's fair to say that, as usual, the book progresses at a fair pace and it kept me turning pages to find out what happens next. I read Deadly Craving in one sitting and I was more than satified with the ending.
OMJ Ryan has kept up his high standard of writing with this engaging installment in the 'Deadly' series. It's well worth a read.
Religious. Themed. Killings.
Look, this is probably my favorite crime trope. I love reading about religiously motivated killers - but that probably says more about me than the trope.
Anyway, this is book 8 in a series but it’s easily readable as a standalone. I hadn’t even heard of this series until I received this one from NetGalley and I had no issues following along. I will say that I am curious about the exact going’s on in the past that are mentioned in this book, but enough information is given to get the gist.
We follow DCI Jane Phillips as she returns to duty with a doozy of a crime scene. A man has been found naked apart from a cloth wrapped around his middle with roses circling the body except at the feet and just to make it more bizarre - his heart is missing.
Naturally this is something they hadn’t seen before and DCI Phillips and her team are trying to figure this all out when another body appears, same style but the brain is missing. Could this be the start of some weird serial murder spree?
Honestly I really enjoyed this. With it being set outside of the US, it’s interesting to see the different ways that police procedure is handled.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was delighted and thrilled to find this on Netgalley and to be given the chance to read it. I love this author’s books and the fact they are set in Manchester takes me back to my childhood!
Jane is back after being off work for a while, and what a way to ease herself back. More or less straight away there is a gruesome murder of a famous sportsman, and his heart is missing. Then another person is murdered but there’s nothing to connect them to each other. Jane contacts her friend and profiler siobahn to see what she thinks, and what she tells Jane is macabre.
As the murders increase, it’s up to Jane and the team to catch the killer before the body count increases.
At least poor Jane has got a decent boss this time, as the wily Fox is now up in the hierarchy, and still ranting and raving.
I read this book very quickly and, as usual I was sad to finish it. The comment left at the end left me dying to know what was going to happen next.
My thanks to the author, Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC.
