This book was a masterpiece. An uniquely Jewish and queer story of an Angel and a Demon leaving their small village to find out what happened to girl from their village Essie, and the girl Rose they meet on their journey. There is love in every action our protagonists take even in the darkest moments.
What I loved about this book was, yes the "Good Omens" style of banter and influence, but more so the wonderful honest story of the hardships and fears of Jewish immigrants coming to America to find a better life in America. Even though the work is fiction i would highly recomend this book to anyone looking to learn about that experience.
I was hesitant at first, as Donald Corren's voice is higher pitched than I generally enjoy listening to; also, although this is a performance rather than a straight-up reading, it's lower-key than I usually gravitate toward. Additionally, I thought the pace was a little rushed in the first chapter or two.
But within five or ten minutes I found my objections vanishing and really came to appreciate the narrator's approach. He (I presume from the name) has just the right dry, ironic, affectionate take. Although he doesn't use dramatically different voices for Ash and Uriel they're always easily distinguished (as are all the other characters); I came to feel that the choice to make Ash and Uriel sound somewhat similar is appropriate to their characterization and their relationship, not to mention the symbiosis of demon and angel.
I enjoyed this audiobook immensely and am glad to report that it does justice to Sacha Lamb's marvelous novel.
Thanks to Netgalley for providing the audiobook! Voluntary review, to be posted online as soon as possible after publication/release.
The story is driven by people migrating from a small village in Europe to the US for a better life and opportunities. In the same village lives a peculiar pair: An Angel and a Demon. The description of these creatures who are coexisting with humans is so vivid that you can practically imagine them.
Given its twisted fairy tale narrative, the book has rightly been compared to the online show Good Omens. I enjoyed the characters with Rose being my favourite strong-headed person 🤗 The book also had representations of pride group in it so it wasn't just another romance segment to it.
I did however feel that the plot did not have a lot of twists or hookups to it that give you a lingering feeling once the book finishes. So it was a good read but lacked the lasting effect that I crave.

I read a physical galley of this and wanted to see how the narrator told this story. This was a great way to take in this already beautiful story of culture. 10/10 recommend.
