This was another great book by Shalini Boland.
There were quite a few twists and turns in this book that I hadn't expected, a new daughter-in-law brought into the family from Australia, but where had the previous one gone? A suspicious mother-in-law, looking out for her precious son and not fully welcoming his new choice of wife. But why, who is she and why has she married her son so quickly?
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and Bookouture for an ARC in return for an honest review
I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘The Daughter-In-Law’ by Shalini Boland in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Caroline and Seb meet on social media and marry in Byron Bay, Australia, after knowing each other just a couple of months. When they return to Stalbridge, England to live in the Royal Oak, his family’s home and business, Seb’s mother Lilian makes it clear she doesn’t like her new daughter-in-law. As Caroline tries to fit in she learns that Seb is keeping a huge secret that he won’t talk about, that he was previously married to Amy who disappeared overnight, but Caroline also has secrets that it’s essential she keeps from Seb and his family.
Shalini Boland is one of my favourite authors and any novel by her is going to be unmissable so it’s no surprise that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘The Daughter-in-Law’. The story is exceptionally well-written with a perplexing and ingenious plot, compelling though devious characters, and lots of suspense, drama, intrigue, and twists and turns, and a staggering ending that took me completely by surprise and was totally unexpected. I can thoroughly recommend this thriller that’s had me enthralled from the first page to the last.
I've read a few Shalini Boland books and have liked them all. This one is not an exception. If anythings it's the best one yet.
Seb goes on vacation to Australia and comes back to the UK with a wife., Caroline. His family is shocked and his mother in particular is quite skeptical of the marriage. As Caroline tries to acclimate to a new country and new family, her new mother-in-law is not making it easy. She seems ready to find fault at every turn.
From the start we know that something untoward will happen. But I was not expecting THAT, or THAT, or THAT!!! It is quite rare for a book to surprise me to this extent. I LOVED it!
I highly recommended from me.
Thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for the arc.
This book was an another enjoyable fast read from the author. A page turning book with fun twists keeps the reader interested wanting to see what happens next. This is a book which I would recommend to all those who like a good mystery.
This is another good book by Shalini Boland! I have read several of her books and she is definitely one of my go-to authors. In this story, Caroline, who is from Australia, meets Sebastian and moves with him to his native England. No spoilers! Recommended.
A twisty, page-turning thriller where the ending was an actual shock to me. Due to my interest in thrillers, I find a lot of endings predictable, but this one was not. It really surprised me and I enjoyed this book.
I don't know, I'm in two minds about this book. The characters are a basically all very unpleasant, and the plot is farfetched but it did draw me in and there were a number of twists that really took me by surprise. Based on this book I think I will look out for other titles by Shalini Boland because The Daughter-in-Law did have it's good points.
My thanks to Netgalley for my opportunity to read an early copy in return for this, my honest opinion.
Boland has become one of my go-to authors for Psychological Thrillers. She always draws me in and keeps me guessing until the end.
Seb brings his new wife home to meet his parents after a whirlwind vacation and unexpected romance. His parents are not thrilled he married Caroline. What can this girl have in common with their son? Lilian wanted Seb to warn his parents before they came home! She wishes he would have done this, as things get awkward really quick.
Lilian does not trust her daughter-in-law and Caroline feels like she is not wanted. Kept me up late to find out happened in this cat and mouse game which wrapped up in a shocking conclusion!
Thanks NetGalley, Bookouture Audio for this advanced copy. Cannot wait for what’s net with Boland.

I know that if it's a Shailini Boland, I will enjoy it immensely. Relatable characters, spot-on dialogue, and a twist at the end that is fun & surprising.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I also listened to this in audio book form.
Surprise twist ending that I was not able to figure out. Really enjoyed it.
The book was well written and it will keep you guessing right to the very end.
I finished the audiobook version in one day.
Goodness. This author is quickly becoming one of my favorites. This book was so good. I loved that it was told in a few different perspectives. Also I love a good twist. This had no shortage of them.
Another brilliant book from this author, well written as always with great characters, plenty of twists and turns and a great ending which I never guessed and it kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this brilliant ARC which I have no hesitation in recommending.
The Daughter In Law is the first book by Shalini Boland I’ve read and reviewed, and the story kept me engaged and turning the pages until its dramatic conclusion.
The conflict centers around newlywed Caroline, who is brought by her husband to live with in-laws she’s never met, at their home in rural England. Lillian, the mother-in-law, is cold and unwelcoming. We are drawn further into the story as we empathize with Caroline, who struggles to adapt to the expectations of her new family.
At first, I considered the friction between Lillian and Caroline to be minor misunderstandings that could easily have been avoided. But as I read further into the book, and the motivations of this dysfunctional family unfolded, several sub-plots emerged. Boland does a great job of weaving the plot strings together to explain the behavior of the Fletcher family, with Caroline at the center of its upheaval. The story is then brought to its clever and satisfying conclusion.

This is told from multiple POVs which adds layers to the novel. I definitely feel for the characters which is honestly quite rare nowadays with thrillers. The first few chapters really had my eyes glued on the screen but then it slows down a bit in the middle. The ending was shocking and twisted. I'm glad I got a chance to read an advanced copy.
Well this one definitely did not turn out the way I expected it to! The quick wedding seemed a bit strange but hey these things happen. What happens after the wedding though - wow!
Really good book I loved it. And I loved how certain characters got their comeuppance and others were vindicated. Very clever!
There is a lot to unpack with this book but it’s hard to review without spoilers. I’ve read other books by Shalini Boland so I knew to expect twists & turns & tons of drama. When it works, it’s a fun ride. When it doesn’t work, things fall apart quickly. I liked the premise of this book with an eloped couple returning to England to live together and help run the family pub. Everything that could go wrong, does. I didn’t buy the mother in law’s inner monologue and the daughter in law’s choices were bizarre. I won’t get started on the men in this book either. Even though this one was a swing and a miss for me, I’ll still likely check out her next book!
*Thanks to Bookoutre and NetGalley for the advance review copy.
What a fantastic read! I could put it down and demolished it in a day! Really well written with a well paced plot and lots of twists and turns. A genuine page turner.
Mind Blowing, Psychological Thriller.
Newly weds, Caroline and Seb Fletcher come home to Stalbridge Somerset a three week whirl wind romance to face Seb's family and the family business the Royal Oak Pub this is going to go down well and be a big surprise she wants to be the perfect daughter in law but its goint to take Lilian her mother in law a lot more that a few days to win her round, and she has yet to meet his brother Felix.
Caroline is holding back secrets of her own and Seb's past as both come to surface it will leave you gobsmacked reading chapter after chapter. With all the gripping pasts that come to light it will leave readers glued to the pages. I honestly could not put this book down once I started it a definite 5 stars from me.
Shalini Boland does it again! She is the queen of surprising twists and this fast paced thriller is no exception. Once again she made me care about the characters, which is rare for most thrillers. This is definitely a page turner that had me racing to the end anticipating the shocking conclusion. If you are a thriller addict, her books are a must read. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Daughter-in-law by Shalini Boland
Brian and Lillian Fletcher cannot believe that their youngest son Sabastian has come home to UK from his holiday to Australia with a new wife, Caroline, who he just met. They have no idea what type of girl Caroline is and now she is working in their family Pub and living with them in their apartment above the pub. Lillian is not happy at all and does everything she can to point out to Sabastian that he made a terrible mistake marrying someone he just met but Caroline is not taking Lillian’s pushiness lying down either as she has her own hidden agenda.
I loved everything about this book. It was a true edge on your seat thriller.
I could relate with the characters and as soon as one chapter ended, I had to read the next one.
