Jennifer appears to have it all, a wonderful husband, beautiful children and a gorgeous home ... the perfect life until, that is, it all comes crashing down when her husband dies suddenly and it all turns into a nightmare when his mistress, Sara, turns up on the doorstep with a baby son and declares he is her husband's child but that's not the worst of it, she also says the house is hers along with all the assets.
What would you do? Move out or give in to her demands and allow her and her son to move in?!? Like I said, a nightmare. Jennifer does what she thinks is best for her and her children and allows Sara to move in thus buying her time to figure out what the heck has happened and what she is going to do about it .
A twisty, fast paced, psychological thriller that I found intriguing and devoured it in quick time and thanks must go to Bookouture and NetGalley for enabling me to read and share my thoughts of The Girlfriend.
Wow! An excellent psychological thriller.
Cole has been killed in a road traffic accident, his being the only car involved, the detectives in charge of the case are puzzled.
His wife Jennifer is in shock, she is also trying to protect her two children. She is thrown into a nightmare when a young woman, Sara, shows up at her door with a small baby, claiming she is Cole’s girlfriend and baby Rory is his son, to make the Jennifer’s living nightmare worse she claims she owns Jennifer’s & Coles beautiful home and all their assets.
Sara suggests to Jennifer that her and baby Rory should move into the family home to see if the can all live together, to avoid Jennifer and her children being homeless.
This is a clever game of cat and mouse, which woman woman will come out on top.
There is mystery in story and a lot going on behind the scenes, what happened to Cole’s secret silver iPhone, what really happened to the young girl he had an affair with previously, did she commit suicide, and is the financial mess Cole has left behind as black and white as it seems?
Great read and I look forward to more from this author.
Many thanks to Net Galley and General Fiction for an ARC of this book in exchange for a review.
Wow what can I say this was a fast paced thriller which was such an addictive read once I had started reading I struggled to put it down. Every time I turned a page I wanted to find out more and was thoroughly invested in the story and the characters A thoroughly brilliant read.
K. L. Slater returns with her latest psychological thriller, THE GIRLFRIEND —a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse and a web of lies, secrets, revenge, manipulation, and MURDER.
Set in Nottinghamshire, a husband leads a double life, leaving the wife with the fallout. The sins of the father will come back to haunt his family.
Cole Fincham is married to Jennifer with two children, Miller and Sylvie. As the book opens, they are hosting a big October Halloween party.
Cole is called away when everything in his life is about to disintegrate. Then there is an accident. Cole is dead.
While Jennifer is still dealing with the loss, a woman shows up at her door with a baby boy.
The woman's name is Sara, and she says she claims she is Cole's girlfriend and this is his son Rory. She also explains that she owns their home, cars, and everything due to loans she provided for Cole.
She is moving in. So they all are supposed to live together. Which, of course, does not work!
But there is much more to the story with a complex behind the scenes —Sara is just a pawn in this game.
Also, Sara has mental health issues, and Cole's other affair years earlier ended with suicide. Things are not right at the company he works for and the employees. Someone is also blackmailing him. He has financial problems, and Jennifer does not have a clue.
The Girlfriend is told from Jennifer’s perspective, primarily, but also highlights Sara.
Things get wacky and crazy. I normally enjoy Slater's books, and the description sounded good, but unfortunately, I could not suspend my disbelief with THE GIRLFRIEND. The premise of the book was too outrageous and unbelievable. No likable characters. Not my favorite by the author; however, I enjoy Kim's books and am a big fan —look forward to her next book!
Also formatting issues with the ARC —the entire book was in italics after the table of contents.

The Girlfriend is a standalone psychological mystery by bestselling author KL Slater. I’ve been wanting to read this author for a while, so grabbed this one when it became available. The intriguing premise was what drew me in and I haven’t seen this particular story done before. The alternating POV helped us get insight into each character and how they all had secrets, motivations and made this great fun to read. It was an easy to read, hard to put down psychological story with some great twists. I will most definitely read more by this author. Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for an advanced copy of this novel.
I didn't enjoy this one. All of the characters in this book have ulterior motives and are hiding things. No one is particularly likeable. I didn't even get the sense that either woman was grief stricken after the sudden death of their lover -- they were too busy focusing on the financial aspects of it. The plot goes through a series of quick, unexpected twists at the very end, but for me it wasn't a satisfying read.
So good! This book had me on the edge of my seat. I could not wait to see what would happen next. So many twists! If you love psychological thrillers pick up this book!
I have read quite a few books by this Author and this one did not disappoint. An edge of your seat psychological thriller from the get go. The twists and turns kept coming.
Thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture, and the Author, K. L. Slater for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Girlfriend by K.L. Slater
I have a new favorite author! Geeeez I enjoyed this book so much. Tense, twisty and just crazy crazy on top of crazy, I can’t even imagine being put in that situation. It was fast paced, with short chapters. The characters are well developed, some I liked, some I didn’t. But I know that was by design. This book was fast paced and very addictive. I definitely recommend.
Many thanks to K.L. Slater, NetGalley, and Bookouture for the advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
💔The Girlfriend by K.L. Slater🤱 I received an ARC of this book and was excited to dig in right away! The story is told from multiple perspectives over the course of different periods of time. With unreliable narrator(s) and multiple plot twists, I was dying to see how everything came together. This book kept me guessing up until the very end! What is Jennifer's secret? What is Sara's motivation? Is Miller telling the truth? With Halloween quickly approaching, I loved reading another thriller during the month! The book just came out on October 27, so head to your local bookstore to find out for yourself! ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #bookstagram #bookreview #thegirlfriend #netgalleyreads #thrillerreads #booktalk (TW for suicide, depression, and infidelity)
Another great read from Kim Slater,a massive 5 star star read I can’t recommend highly enough.A great physiological thriller which Kim Slater excels in.Sara has an affair with Cole and they have a baby boy together Rory and when Cole is killed in a car accident she his wife and with an ultimatum that she owns the house and they move in together which is a strange move to say the least,
Thanks to #netgalley for the ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. This book! I got a little smug 2 thirds of the way through thinking I had unravelled all of the twists and knew how it was going to end. This didn't stop me from turning page after page holding my breath only to discover I had it so wrong! I love when a thriller messes with my mind in the best of ways and this one certainly did that. A domestic type of thriller...imagine finding out on the day you become a widow that your newly deceased husband has been living a double life and his other partner arrives to let you know she owns your house, has a child with him and is either moving in or evicting you. This book had me side eyeing almost every character at some stage before it wound up in a way I didn't anticipate. Told from multiple points of view, past and present tenses, it was one heck of a great read. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #klslater #thegirlfriend #netgalley #tea_sipping_bookworm #goodreads #litsy #thestorygraph #domesticthriller #bookqueen #bookstagram #amazonaustralia
What starts out as a shocking discovery ends up with a wild ride you will not see coming! Can you imagine finding out about your husband and his secret family and then finding out they own everything you thought was yours? Jennifer’s husband dies unexpectedly, and she finds out her husband has a mistress and a baby and they are claiming they own your house. And move in. What a wacky scenario that I could have never thought of. While the story is quite entertaining, I had many moments thinking what the heck!?!
Told in the present and the past and with chapters from a few characters POVs, the story unraveled in a twisty way. I’ve read a lot of domestic thrillers, but this one is definitely unique and will keep you guessing.
Having read previous books by this author I was keen to get my hands on The Girlfriend, and it doesn't disappoint. Cole Fincham and his wife are preparing to throw their annual lavish Halloween party when he takes a phone call and dashes off into his car.
The party never takes place because in the next few hours, his wife will be told that Cole has died in a traffic accident.
There's a knock on the door and standing there is a young woman with a baby, who claims to be not only Cole's mistress, and mother of his son, but the owner of the Finchams' house, business and cars. And what's more, it all turns out to be true.
This is quite an intriguing proposition: I'm always interested in people leading dual lives. I liked Cole's wife because unusually in this genre, she starts investigating to get to the bottom of everything, and does quite a bit better than the police.
Wow, wow, wow, Slater knocks it out of the park again with another cracking thriller and definitely five star worthy!
Well written, compelling and unputdownable, which leads me to say (in my best Magnus Magnusson voice) "I've started so I'll finish. Yep, that was my friday night sorted.
The story is told from various POV, is full of secrets and lies, has you second guessing yourself as you try to work out who killed Cole and takes you on such a twisty ride.
Its characters are well developed, credible and
complex and did I mention there's a Halloween party, which made it the perfect October read.
Thoroughly enjoyed it and would highly recommend.
Many thanks to Bookouture for my tour spot.

This book was awesome. I was hooked and on the edge of my seat the whole book. It was an awesome thriller. I would highly recommend this novel to anyone who loves a good mystery and suspense. I will definitely read more by this writer.
I loved this one. This was the first I've read from this author. I thought I had it figured out until the last twist! I will definitely seek out more of their work!
Finally an ARC that I am giving 5 stars! I received this ARC from Bookouture via NetGalley in exchange for my honest feedback. I found the book very suspenseful and it definitely kept me guessing. So many books these days are told from multiple viewpoints, but I can't remember one I have read recently from so many viewpoints. This made for fascinating reading as you get into the heads of multiple characters.
KL Slater makes you feel for many of the characters - Jennifer whose life was turned upside down, Miller with his teenage issues compounded by family drama, Sara who essentially just wants to be loved. Despite all of them making some bad choices, you do sympathize.
There were at least 3 twists, none of which I saw coming. Toward the end I did start to have a feeling about where the author was going with Sara, but I think that was foreshadowed perfectly rather than being too obvious.
Wow! Her husband has a girlfriend. Now the husband is dead and the girlfriend owns the house. This story got better and better as I flew through the virtual pages.
And then there are the others who were involved in this twisted scenario. But I won't say who because that would create spoilers.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
K.L. Slater is masterful at these compulsively readable psychological thrillers and this was just another example of her "keeping me on the edge of my seat and up too late reading!" ability! Twists were good and unexpected, which I love, and I enjoy an unstable character so this had that as well. Highly recommend any book by Slater!
