A sinister story that got better as it went along.
Wasn't too fast paced just Linda rolled through the motions slowly so you could take everything in. Perfect and easy read.

Thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for an early release of this book.

Wow! I normally am not a fan of more than 2 POVs AND multiple timelines, but this one flowed very nicely! The chapters were short enough that I would stay up at night saying "just one more!". The secret girlfriend/life trope is seen throughout this genre, but this had a unique perspective on it. The horrifying thought that your husband's secret girlfriend also has financial ties to you- really got me! I love that you could empathize with even the "villains" of the story. I also love when characters are unreliable. This book was a true web of lies and kept me guessing 'til the very end. It gave me anxiety the stress that Jennifer was going through as I read this book. I love when novels can invoke real emotions from me as I'm reading - as if it is really happening to me. I have read one other novel from KL Slater and enjoyed it, but this one far topped it. I look forward to exploring more of her work. I also love she is a British Author! Learning phrases like " one of my pet hates" or " horses for courses" was so fun. Adds a whole new element to reading.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for a copy of this ebook in exchange for my honest review.

I am not usually bothered by books that are really unrealistic - that’s what makes reading fun, getting swept up in a story. However this one really pushed the line into just being silly. The whole story line with Sara wanting to move in was just ridiculous and other than just knowing someone killed Cole I didn’t really find there to be any suspense in this book. I wasn’t hooked, it wasn’t tense or fast reading, it took me days longer to read this book than the average time I spend on a book but I finished it for the sake of fulfilling my role in writing a review on NetGalley. When I hit 83% finished and saw I was at the epilogue I was relieved. This was my first book by this author and I don’t know if I will pick up another. I do want to say her writing style is good, her plot didn’t really have any holes it was just o ridiculous to me and not suspenseful at all. There wasn’t enough conflict and there was not a single character I connected with or was drawn to as I didn’t find them very well developed.

This was an interesting read. I thought the first half was steady, but then as things get revealed to Jennifer and the reader, the tension ramped up.

Another fab book by this author - I really don't know how she does it. Lots of twists and turns and red herrings. I liked the characters and the way the story flowed. Cant wait for the next one! A strong psychological thriller.

Unusual psychological thriller;
The blurb prepared me well for this exciting psychological thriller, which has an unusual, but understandable plot. The story is told from different perspectives, but mainly from the point of view of the widow Jennifer and Sara, the lover of her husband. Due to the change of perspective, you can put yourself in the shoes of the people and the characters are presented believably and understandably. There is suspense from the first page - and the resolution is gradual and, while unusual, is believable. The writing style is so pleasant or the book so exciting that I didn't even notice it, I just wanted to continue reading. The very positive reviews didn't exaggerate, I was very entertained by this thriller.

THE GIRLFRIEND - Jennifer's life is thrown into chaos after her husband is killed in an RTA & his mistress turns up at her family home, which she says actually belongs to her....

This is the first K L Slater book I've read and I found it enjoyable, easy and intriguing, if not a little far fetched and dare I say implausible at times...although I think if you're reading this genre you have to be willing to suspend your belief and accept a certain lack of realism!

The chapters were short which meant I could read it speedily and the language colloquial (reminding me of Martina Coles style at times.) There were lots of twists and turns which built up to an exciting ending - you could easily imagine this story being turned into a TV drama.

This book won't change your life but if you're looking for a bit of escapism its definitely worth a read.

Thanks to Net Galley & Bookouture for the copy in exchange for an honest review.

Oh my goodness yet another excellent book by K.L Slater which kept me riveted for the afternoon and late evening as I had to finish it. I dont want to say anymore as anything I say will be spoilers, just read it and enjoy the book - I did. She knows how to get you involved in the story.

I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.

The Girlfriend by KL Slater, releasing 10/27/2022
Jennifer has a great marriage, two beautiful kids, a gorgeous newly remodeled home. Everything seems perfect. And then in one fell swoop she loses her husband, discovers their marriage was far from perfect, and now Jennifer and her children don’t even have a place to live. Nothing in her life seems real and it’s up to her to unravel the mess that’s been left behind.

What a ride! This twisty psychological thriller sucked me in from the first page and it never let up. The story is told from various perspectives and a few different timelines by well crafted unreliable narrators as the betrayal, madness, and lies upon lies all unfold.
I held my breath on more than one occasion as I furiously turned pages, anticipating what was coming next.
This book goes live on October 27th and it would make for a great Halloween weekend read!
I’ll be back for more KL Slater no doubt about it!
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this ARC of “The Girlfriend”

NetGalley granted me the honor of being able to an ARC of “The Girlfriend” by K.L. Slater.

I have not read a book this quickly in a good minute. It was the perfect mix of suspense, betrayal, and mystery all wrapped up into one fantastic novel.

Every-time I thought I had the story figured out there would be another turn to which the chapter would leave you at a cliffhanger just wondering….

Once again K.L Slater has written another great thriller, she is definitely one of my go to authors as soon as I see anything new that she has written.

Imagine this, your husband is found dead, at first thought to be caused by a car accident but then we find out that he had received a head injury previously to driving the car. You are now alone with two children to raise by yourself. Next a woman arrives on your doorstep telling you she was your husbands girlfriend and after loaning him money she now has control of your finances, including the house you are living in. How well did you really know your husband, is everything now what it seems?

I raced through this and due to another night of not being able to sleep finished it in a few hours. Many twists and turns a long the way presenting us with a great book full of suspense. I was kept guessing all the way through but have to say I did think I new who had actually committed the murder, even though this did feel a bit far fetched to me at the half way point. If you are a fan of this author you will enjoy the book and if you have not read any of her work I encourage you to do so.

Thankyou to Netgalley, the author and publisher for an advanced copy of the book in return for an honest , unbiased review.

This author just goes from strength to strength!! I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Girlfriend'.

During preparations for a lavish Halloween party at their family home, Jennifer receives the devastating news that husband, Cole, has been killed in a tragic RTA. Fast forward one day and glamorous Sara winds up on her doorstep to drop the bombshell that she is Cole's mistress, while her babe-in-arms is Cole's son....and oh yeah - she was sole investor in Cole's company and as such that all assets 9including Jennifers' family home, belong to her! In a somewhat unusual move, Sara suggests that she move into the family home with her son to cultivate some kind of blended family. From there on it ALL KICKS OFF!! Cant say more for fear of providing spoilers, but trust me, it won't disappoint!

Such an entertaining story, and the twisted plot - just superb!

This is a book I would 100% recommend to fellow fans of psychological fiction.

My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy,.

What a brilliant and gripping thriller this is. As life-turned-upside-down stories go, this has just about everything. It's bad enough to lose your husband, but when another woman turns up claiming to be his girlfriend, and accompanied by his son, surely life can't get any worse. But then that woman reveals that she owns your house....A veritable page turner.

The Girlfriend by K.L. Slater did not live up to the author's previous works. I found the premise of this book implausible and the main character quite unbelievable. I could not finish the book.

I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘The Girlfriend’ by K L Slater in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

As Jennifer organises a party for family and friends, her husband Cole gets in his car, drives away and dies soon after when he crashes into a tree. The next day an attractive blonde woman with a baby in her arms knocks at their door and says she’s Cole’s girlfriend and the baby is his son Rory. She says her name is Sara Nordstrom and she owns the house and everything in it including their bank account, and as she’s not going anywhere Jennifer can either move out with her two children Sylvie and Miller or they can learn to live together as one happy family.

‘The Girlfriend’ is a superbly written psychological thriller with a story that’s mainly told through the eyes of Jennifer and Sara. The further I’ve got into the plot the greater the tension that skilfully builds up and the more lies and deceit are revealed. The characters are perfectly described and with the drama, intrigue and twists and turns I’ve been unable to stop reading until I’ve reached the final superb twist. This is another amazing thriller from a very talented writer who has the ability to weave excitement and suspense into each novel and finish with a devious and unexpected conclusion, a fitting end to this thoroughly enjoyable and suspenseful thriller. This is an absolutely brilliant thriller and highly recommended.

This was an ARC from NetGalley.
This was a dnf for me. It may very well have been that it was an advanced copy and editing was not complete, but there were too many obvious inconsistencies for me to get past. Example: the husband is away and telling her where he is staying while he rubs her head.. I hope this is an editing issue. May be a great book, but I could not continue. Details matter.
