I have to say I found this a little over-the-top, especially the ending. While it moved along at a decent pace, it just seemed a bit thrown together to me.
Anyway, however unlikely, what a nightmare. I can only imagine the trauma of having something like this happen, just one thing after another. Perhaps the moral of the story is that once someone has strayed, it's best to cut them loose.
Three stars.
Thanks to author, publisher and NetGalley for my ARC.
This book was absolutely crazy! And I enjoyed every minute of it! There was plenty of times I wished Sara was a real one so that I can beat the crap out of her!! I hated her so much!!! I would definitely make sure you put this on your TBR and side it was absolutely amazing!!!
This book. Woah! I finished this in under 24 hours because I had to know what happens next. This story is bananas, but you will be hooked immediately. Highly recommend for a quick thriller!

K.L. Slater, or Kim, is the number one bestselling author of sixteen psychological crime thrillers. She has sold over two million copies of her books worldwide. She has also written four Carnegie-nominated Young Adult novels as Kim Slater for Macmillan Children’s Books. Kim has an MA in Creative Writing and lives with her husband in a small Nottinghamshire village.
“There’s a solution for every problem. You just have to be creative enough to find it.”
Jennifer thinks she has a perfect life. An up-and-coming husband lavishes the family with anything they could want, two beautiful children and a solid marriage. Her husband suddenly dies, and she gets a knock on the door.
Holy buckets. This was intense from page one. I enjoyed the multiple narrators and perspectives; it made the storyline smooth.
The characters were well done. Jennifer seemed like a calm, collected, caring mom. Sara was immature and secretive. Miller was a brooding teenager with secrets. Sylvie was innocent, caught in the crossfire.
This story was wild. From start to finish, the twists kept coming. When the big reveal happened, I was shocked. And as the punches kept coming, I didn’t know what to do except keep reading.
K.L. Slater is a gifted storyteller, and the madness packed into this book will leave your jaw on the floor. I devoured this book in a single sitting because I could not put it down- once things started to unravel, I had to find out what happened.
This was such a well-executed house of cards. The way pieces of information are dribbled in, while seemingly unimportant but coming back with a bang, was brilliant. This was emotional turmoil at its finest!
Wow, what a rush! Reading this book was like being on a rollercoaster, I hadn't time to recover from one shock when the next one hit. And I didn't see any of them coming. This was one of the most exciting books I have read this year, and believe me I've read quite a few. Don't expect to spread this read out over a few days, you won't be able to put it down.
The Girlfriend was an ok domestic thriller. I didn't really care for it but it wasn't terrible. It felt so slow until, all of a sudden, everything comes to a head all at once. I don't want to risk any spoilers so I'll just say thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
When Jennifer and her family are prepping for a huge Halloween party at their house and receive devastating news about her husband, they feel nothing can make life worse. However when a stranger appears saying she not only has a son with the late husband, but is the rightful owner of the family home.
A dark and twisted thriller with lots of twists and unexpected turns. No one is innocent in this story and under the rock of each character another secret is uncovered.
Good characters and suspense right to the end.
Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Another enjoyable read by this author. The premise of the story, a mistress moves in with the widow and children of her recently deceased lover because, surprise, she actually owns everything. It’s a twisted tale, but not dark in atmosphere. Hard to imagine finding out your newly deceased husband has been having an affair and your children have a baby brother, but that your way of life is a stack of lies and you might lose everything: devastating. Love stories that have layers and twists.
This author can do no wrong! I absolutely was turning the pages as quickly as possible. Loved the plot and twist!
I love Slater! Her books are so gripping! This one did not disappoint. My heck! The whole mistress storyline is used a lot but this one has a twist you won’t want to miss! Loved it!!
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the advanced reader copy of this book! I have never read a K.L. Slater book, but after this one I will definitely be on the lookout for others by her. This book took me a little while to get into- it started off a little slow in my opinion, but this did help develop the characters really nicely. The concept of this story is so unique and also a total nightmare- your spouse dies unexpectedly, and his girlfriend shows up at your house with the rights to everything he owns. I really had no idea what was going to happen or how everyone and everything was connected, so after things started to reveal itself, I did find it to be hard to put down. Overall would recommend this book for a unique plot line and a good twisty psychological thriller!
I was completely gripped by the storyline and stayed up late reading to finish it (which is unlike me!). This is a story where the characters are so well written that they can make you feel real emotions - both anger and sympathy in my case. I found certain aspects a little unrealistic and frustrating but ultimately the twists and turns made for a great read.
Every wife's nightmare! The Girlfriend started a little slow but had plenty of twist and turns although maybe a little unrealsistic at times. Having said that I didn't want to put this book down as the suspense kept drawing me back.
I was a little disappointed with the ending as it felt a little rushed and as if the author didn't know how to finish the story.
A worthwhile read though.
What a fantastic talented author indeed who never disappoints.
Her plot ideas are so realistic it is frightening!!!
What would you do if a woman arrived at your family home with a baby claiming to be your recently dead husband from a car accident and the baby is his! Furthermore, e had told her that he was divorced and she has got paperwork saying that the house and everything is now in her name! Now what would you do indeed???
This book explores this ridiculously realistic scenario with much twists and turns.
Fantastic read indeed...
Wow, is all I can say, really don't know where to start, this book had me reading in to the early hours, the house has gone to pot and I haven't fed my kids lol
A great twisty turny read, absolutely brilliant as always from C. L Taylor

Listen, I will read anything and everything that Slater writes. This one had all of the elements of a great thriller!
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗼 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄:
Jennifer has lost her husband of over a decade. Within moments of the family’s grieving, his girlfriend shows up at the door with a list of demands- including moving herself in with the family.
𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗜 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗱:
- The twists were fun!
- Fast-paced
- Multiple POVs, but a manageable amount with 4 main POVs
𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗜 𝗗𝗶𝗱𝗻'𝘁:
- Cheating trope is not for everyone, so just be aware of that before reading
- Very frustrating to read at times, so it took me over a week to read.
𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗜𝗳 𝗬𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗼:
- Fatal Attraction (1987 film)
- Obsessed (2009 film ft Beyoncé and Idris Elba)
- Dark secrets and cheating spouses
Solid 4 star read for me!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/(5)
The Girlfriend was a great read, I could feel Jennifer’s frustration and anguish at her situation after her husband Coke dies and his girlfriend arrives with her baby, stating she owns Jennifer’s house. What would you do? Is the question you find yourself asking.
The Girlfriend K.L. Slater was another fantastic book this applies to every book I have read by Kim, She is one amazing author and when her books comes out everything i had planned is put on hold and my kindle comes alive. This book was no different, it was fast paced from the very beginning and a great page turner with great twists and turns throughout, this book was a 5 star read and I highly recommend all of Kims books.
Just another excellent read! .
I always love K.L Slater books as I find they’re so gripping and easy to read through! I loved this book as I wasn’t able to guess what happened and kept me on my toes.
I feel like I really felt sympathy for the core characters in this book, and that made me even more interested in the plot twists.
I can’t wait to keep reading more of this authors books; they’re slowly becoming my favourite author!
Jennifer and her husband Cole are having a garden party but he has to suddenly leave early on without much explanation. Later on in the evening it is reported that he has died in a car crash but no other cars were involved. A day or so later a woman arrived at the family home with a baby claiming to be Cole’s girlfriend and that the baby is his and that Cole had told her that he was divorced and she has got paperwork saying that the house and everything is now in her name.
Although the story is quite slow to begin with, once it gets going I couldn’t put it down with so many twists and turns and who-dunnits you just don’t know what is going to happen next! I would definitely recommend it! 4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks to K.L Slater, her publishers and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this novel.
