One day Jennifer have a happy life and marriage, the next thing it's all chaos. When her husband Cole suddenly died from a car accident, a woman suddenly appears from their doorstep, claiming to be Cole's girlfriend and holding their baby. Jennifer's life turned upside down when she learns the truth about her husband's betrayal. Not to mention their property and money.
I've been stuck from my reading slump and this book helped me! I have read The Apartment before and did not like it that much. I thought of giving the author another chance. I read the positive reviews and I have high hopes for this book. It turns out a good read!
I like a book that draws me in with just a few chapters. This book has it and it got me hooked. I didn't even expect to finish it sooner due to my reading slump. I get easily bored and distracted but I kept reading.
This book has multiple point of view. At first it discouraged me since this type of point of view confuses me on what's going on. When I kept on reading I realise this helped clear up confusion and explains more on what's happening.
The plot is definitely unexpected. I kept guessing on who is behind all the bad things that's happening but I can't. The truth kept on coming and that's not all! The end chapters keep on the revelations and I'm shocked! I never expected the truth about Ellen, Sarah and Jennifer! Not to mention Corinne who is a silent spectator! I'm not even into psychological thrillers but this book changed my mind!
Overall this is such a good read! I'm so glad to have chosen this book on NetGalley. Totally worth it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the advance reading copy.
Jennifer's marriage to Cole has had some rocky moments but things seem to have settled at last. They are preparing to host a huge party when he has a terrible car crash and dies. The next day Sara turns up claiming to be Cole's lover and clutching a baby. She states that she owns the family home and insists on moving in...
The Girlfriend is a domestic drama and psychological thriller set in the UK.
Cole and Jennifer have bounced back from his affair, have renovated their home and enjoy a lavish lifestyle. This facade crumbles when he dies and the truth is revealed. The premise of the book is fascinating and makes the reader wonder how they would react in the same circumstances.
Jennifer refuses to leave the house but has no legal power to prevent Sara moving in. There is a fabulous tension created and maintained over the course of the book. Both women are scheming for their own survival. The majority of the book is written from Jennifer's first person perspective in the present day but we also see Cole, Miller (their son) and Sara's viewpoints now and in the past.
Despite the extreme circumstances, I felt that the characters behaved authentically and I could understand their actions even if I didn't approve of them. There are lots of twists in the final quarter of the book and I wasn't expecting any of them!
The Girlfriend is an entertaining and dramatic psychological thriller.
I really enjoyed this book. The twist at the end was a great surprise that was not what I saw coming. A little slow in the middle, but made up for it in the end.
A very good reader as always from Ms Slater. Some very complex characters ensure the story has plenty of twists and turns. Easy to read and engaging throughout.
The Girlfriend was full of drama, suspense, a crazy mistress and surprises until the end. Kept me guessing and turning pages until the wee hours of the night. I look forward to reading more from K.L. Slater.
Thank you to net galley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Sounded great but ended up a rather unsatisfactory read. The characters were all quite unlikeable and the authors description of the husband/lover Cole was conflicting and as how he would have behaved is key this spoiled a lot of the premise for me.
Lots of twists that i didn’t expect but most of them were just too wacky to believe.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for my ARC for free in exchange for an honest review.
Losing the love of your life in suspicious circumstances, resulting in the beginning of a downward spiral potentially losing everything else!
Twist upon twist upon twist from the beginning to the end, K.L. Slater successfully kept me awake overnight until I got to the end! Would highly recommend to any fan of psychological thrillers!
the plot is very interesting which is why i decided to read this story. i mean...how messed up is it to live with your husband's girlfriend under the same roof?! unfortunately, i didn't like the characters here, they are somewhat annoying.
the paced of the story is too slow, and i almost want to dnf this book because it became boring for me when i reached the middle part. but i still pushed myself to read cos i'm very curious to know what really happened. i didn't get that much excited not until i was nearing the end. the only part that got me thrilled was when the twists were finally revealed.
overall, this is not the kind of mystery/suspense i am looking for, but it's still a fine book to read.
Thank you @netgalley and @bookouture for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review 💙
In this book we meet Jennifer and her family, Cole, her husband, Miller her teenage son and 6year old Sylvie. We join them as they’re preparing for the Halloween Party of the century. Cole has been doing well in his job, they’ve recently finished renovations on their house and now is the time to show it all to their friends, family and colleagues. The final preparations are under way when Cole leaves the house suddenly and without saying anything to anyone. Just where has he gone and what is going on?
When a knock at the door some hours later brings 2 police officers Jennifer’s world is turned upside down. Just what secrets has Cole been keeping and who is the mysterious Sara, who turns up the next
We follow both Jennifer and Sara as they come to terms with the devastating news of Cole’s death. Can the mystery woman be trusted? Can Jennifer move on with her life and support her children when they need her most.
I really enjoyed reading this book and getting to know both characters. The twist in the story were well placed and kept my interest making me want to keep reading to discover the truth.
KL Slater has once again written a great book. Highly recommend
Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book
Loved this thriller it had me hooked from the beginning. I was fully invested in the characters. I loved having the sons perspective as well. Thabk you Netgalley for this copy.
Overall, the Girlfriend was a solid thriller with several twists that keep the reader from predicting everything that will happen before the last page. Every single action and detail are connected and important to the story, and it was a unique idea for a thriller. A fast-paced, quick read, I would recommend this book to any fan of twisty domestic thrillers.
A huge thank you to the author, Bookouture, and NetGalley for a copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review. #TheGirlfriend #NetGalley
I enjoy all of K.L. Slaters books. I would give this one 4 our of 5 stars. I enjoyed the story and the writing was good but the characters drive me nuts. Some of the ending was predictable but some let me shocked. I would definitely recommend this to everyone.
This book was thrilling, fast paced, and a page turner! Just when I thought I knew what was going on, I was shocked yet again! I really enjoyed it.
I've always enjoyed KL Slater books - they're fun, easy reads perfect for cozy nights after long, busy days! The Girlfriend is the newest domestic thriller, and it definitely is a fresh take on a sometimes-tired troupe! Jennifer has just learned that Cole, her beloved husband of fourteen years, has suddenly and tragically died in a car accident. She barely has a moment to wrap her head around her new reality when Sara shows up at her door with a baby and a claim...a claim that the baby is Cole's and the house they're standing in is hers too. Jennifer is thrown into chaos. Who can she trust? Who in her immediate circles know what? Is she the only one that's been living in the dark? And WHAT did her husband get himself into?!
I enjoyed this quick read - once I got started, I looked forward to seeing how the story fit together. The ending was surprising and unorthodox, and I LOVE when I get a real surprise! I did feel like it was SO out of left field that I was a bit surprised, and it was all very tidy in the end. I would have enjoyed a bit more "fleshing out" of the backstory and the "after". That being said, this was a fun new read by KL Slater and worth a read if you enjoy domestic thrillers!
Well, this is probably a case of "its me, not you".
I was really set on ready this book because it sounded so intriguing.
While in the middle of organizing the Halloween party of the year, Jennifer has to deal with the fact that her husband just took of and left her with all the organizing. A few hours later, cops are at the door to inform her that her husband has had a terrible car crash and didn't make it out alive. And if that isn't enough... a couple of hours later his girlfriend is at the door telling Jennifer she owns everything. The house, the car, all the money....
Intriguing isn't it? And it is, for the first 100 pages... but then it just gets so far fetched and just a little silly at times.
The overall problem with this novel is that it is lacking relatable characters that you connect with as a reader.
and it lacks plot twists that keep your head spinning in a good way and not in a 'god, this is just getting ridiculous-way'.
This feels like a psychological thriller version of days of our lives and that is just not what I am looking for in a novel.
Cole Fincham suffers a car accident leaving his wife and 2 children behind. A family that had it all but not all was as it seemed as Cole left behind another child tgat no one knew about. However, Sara, the other mother had some strange ideas on how they should move forward following Cole's death and of course there was a twist that I didn't see coming.
Great book and worth a read.
This was another enjoyable read by K L Slater. Her books all have unique storylines that keep you hooked from start to finish. There were some good twists and turns that kept my interest.

📚 Synopsis:
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her buttery blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms.
As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts.
She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I know this will be hard to hear. But I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.’
My world implodes. And then she tells me that she owns our home – and that she’s not going anywhere…

This is the sort of book that will keep you up at night because you just have to keep reading. It is so fast paced and there are so many twists and turns! Just when you think you know what’s happening, you’re hit with another huge twist. The plot is so well thought out. I found myself thinking ‘How can this even happen?’ and yet it was entirely plausible at the same time.
This is the first book I’ve read by K.L. Slater but it certainly won’t be the last!
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this eARC.
Well this book is full to the brim with twists and turns. KL Slater does it again. This book is gripping and I read it in a single sitting. Don't miss it.
The Girlfriend was a great read and I am giving it 4 out of 5 stars. Great story line and plot! It definitely had me excited and on my toes. Towards the end it really picks up, however it did feel slightly rushed and left me with some unanswered questions. The beginning was slower than I would’ve liked but it still kept me very entertained. Overall, I think the story is great and I highly would recommend! Thank you NetGalley & K.L Slater for allowing me to read this before it’s been published! I wish all the success!
