We join the families on Victory street to share their excitement after discovering that their street has been chosen as part of the royal visit. This helps to pull the community together as they get busy planning for the event with Mary at the helm. Hopefully she will get the recognition she deserves!
The Bryant sisters play their part by performing some old favourites, their younger family members and friends join them.
It was quite refreshing to hear from some of the old favourites in this series, Mary and Basil.
Look forward to reading more about the young ones in future books.
It was 1956 in Liverpool when Mary learned the plans of Queen Elizabeth II, and her husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, when they were going to visit Victory Street, during their tour of Liverpool. Mary took charge of the organisation to have Victory Street tidied up, making it fit for the royal visit. Lizzie, Mary's small granddaughter, was going to present a bouquet of flowers to the Queen, and rehearsal for her was going well. Lizzie was deaf but she and all those around her knew signing, so she communicated well.
Bella and the other two Bryant Sisters would perform, as they had during the war, as well as her eldest son, Levi, and his two friends. Levi was keen to become a singer and his small band was having success with the concerts they joined in. The admiration Levi held for the new bands from the US as well as locally, with John Lennon doing well saw him anxious not to go on with schooling. He wanted to work to earn money and make his dreams come true. Would they manage to get Victory Street ready in the short time they had? Would their plans be successful?
A Royal Visit to Victory Street is the 5th in The Bryant Sisters series by Pam Howes (and perfect timing after current events) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was wonderful to catch up with Bella and the girls, learn more about Levi, Earl, Bobby and their integrated family, as well as the strong, determined and stalwart Mary, matriarch of the family. I love this author's work and I have no hesitation in highly recommending A Royal Visit to Victory Street (along with the series).
Note: The blurb is misleading, as from the second paragraph down, it's pretty much all wrong.
With thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
A Royal Visit to Victory Street (The Bryant Sisters Book 5) by Pam Howes is a great WWII-era historical fiction saga that is the fifth book in this charming series.
This series has kept its freshness, interest, and pace throughout the last four books, and the fifth is a great addition.
This book takes place in the after-war period in 1956 Liverpool where everyone is still trying to rebuild snd find their place. The progression of the characters allows them to be flawed, realistic, and honest. I really enjoyed this one.
5/5 stars

Book Description:
From Amazon charts bestseller Pam Howes comes an emotional and uplifting saga about the power of family and a community trying to rebuild their lives after the terrible war that nearly destroyed everything…
1956, Liverpool. With the shadow of the war looming over them and bomb craters littering the surrounding streets, hope feels far away for the residents of Victory Street. When they learn that the Queen has chosen to visit them on a tour of Liverpool, the delighted neighbours bring back the wartime spirit. Can they possibly get the street ready in time?
Even a royal visit cannot take away Bella Harrison’s worries. Her son, fourteen-year-old Levi, has just told her he wants to move to America to join the rest of his father’s family. The news has so shocked Bella that she’s not sure she’ll be able to sing for the Queen, jeopardising all their plans for the big day.
Life has been hard for Levi, growing up as a mixed-race boy in Liverpool, but he’s the light of Bella’s life. The thought of losing him brings back the terrible memories of her father and sister dying during the war. If everyone pulls together to make the Queen’s visit an unforgettable celebration, perhaps she can persuade Levi that Victory Street is where he belongs.
But when Levi receives heartbreaking news from America and his move becomes uncertain, Bella starts to wonder if all her efforts to keep him in Liverpool have been for the right reasons. Can Bella find it in herself to sing for the big celebration, and make the right choice for her beloved son?
A totally unputdownable, heart-wrenching historical novel, packed with family secrets, perfect for fans of Dilly Court, Diney Costeloe and Nancy Revell.
Author Bio:
Pam Howes is a retired interior designer, mum to three daughters, grandma to seven assorted grandchildren and roadie to her musician partner.
The inspiration for Pam’s first novel came from her teenage years, working in a record store, and hanging around with musicians who frequented the business. The first novel evolved into a series about a fictional band, The Raiders. She is a fan of sixties music and it’s this love that compelled her to begin writing.

This is book #5 in the Bryant Sisters saga. Whilst it is part of a series, it can easily be read as a standalone book. I’ve followed the series from the beginning so have come to know the characters well. Based in Liverpool, the war is still fresh in people’s memories, despite it being over for many years. A new Queen has been crowned though, which has given hope for the country and when the residents of Victory Street hear the Queen is coming to visit them it sends much needed excitement through the area!
This was a lovely read, full of community spirit and friendship. I love the singing trio of the Bryant Sisters and it was wonderful for them to be planning to sing for the Queen. We get to also meet again many of the characters from the previous books, and it was fun to join in with the preparations for a really important day for the community! The author’s writing takes you straight into the heart of the characters and you can feel that you are joining in with the celebrations along with them!
It's not all fun and festivities though, there are some moving storylines revolving around Bella’s family, particularly with young Levi who wants to leave and live in America. The storyline moves along at a good pace, capturing all the feelings and emotions, both happy and sad, as it goes. It’s a heart-warming, emotional and uplifting story which I would definitely recommend!!
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
Its 1956, Liverpool and there’s still remains that are visible of the war.
The occupants of Victory Street hear that their street is chosen to have a Royal visit, from the Queen and Prince Phillip, and that too, in six weeks.
A member of the WI, Mary, and those that live on Victory Street, all get together to arrange party for the Royal visit, this will include some songs from ‘The Bryant sisters along with Levi Harrison and his band singing some too.
I loved this book, it was lovely meeting up with the residents, I couldn’t put this down.
The author kept me hooked and I’m looking forward to reading what comes next in Victory Street.
I highly recommend this book.
A must read if you’ve got to know these characters through The Bryant Sisters books. With a series it’s best to read in order. Although the Bryant Sisters play their part other family members, especially the American side of the family, stories are told. Great characters and great storylines throughout the book. Easy to read and follow. Thanks to Pam Howes and your publisher. Thanks also to NetGalley.

A Royal Visit to Victory Street is book 5 in the The Bryant Sisters series.
Set during 1956 in Liverpool, it shows a community still trying to rebuild their lives and find their places in the changed world.
It is an easy, quick read, with characters that are realistic and a pace that is neither too fast nor too slow.
A delightful way to spend an hour.
