I received an ARC from Grand Central Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

Surprise! This was book 21! But it was the first I'd read.

Thankfully, the authors do a great job of giving enough info that I actually wasn't confused.

I quickly became vested in the main storylines, wanting to find out how they connect. Yes—it totally sucked me in and didn't let me go!

1. Constance travels back in time to save her siblings from a horrible fate.
2. Pendergast is a mysterious man with money and power. At first, what's driving him was foggy for me.
3. Armstrong Coldmoon, an FBI agent, works on solving a murder case on the Rez.
4. A seemingly benign museum worker is locked in a cold storage freezer and dies, investigated by Lieutenant Vincent D'Agosta.

I feel like the touchstone in these different stories is Pendergast. Everyone knows him and have felt his influence. This novel has a bit of a gritty feel, but it's not so dark that I had nightmares. So that's the right amount of horror or disturbing characters with a gothic feel for me.

Fans of this series are going to love so much about this book.

There was ONE gripe for me. It ended on a cliffhanger. And I literally yelled, "NO!" I didn't feel didn't feel satisfied with any of the story threads getting resolved. Now I have to decide if I'm going to read the previous 20 this next year or just wait for 22 to come out.

I recommend this book! (I'm knocking it down one star because of the cliffhanger—you can decide if that's fair or not since I was entranced by the storylines.)

I enjoy the Pendergast series and have read all 21 books, in past reviews I have been forgiving of a few of the not so great installments because for a long-running series it’s going to happen. Unfortunately, this 21st installment was disappointing, the parallel plot with Coldmoon was convoluted and I found myself scanning the pages to get on with the main story. The main plot was interesting yet leaving readers with an inconclusive ending, well…not what I would expect from these authors and disappointing.

I would not recommend this book if you have not read any books from the Agent Pendergast series. To truly enjoy this series, start the first three books in the series.

ARC was provided by NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

I'm a huge fan of this series yet this one left me unsure how I feel about it. There have been some out there plots in previous books, but this one goes almost too far. There's plenty of tension. And after finishing it I realized how necessary this one is to pulling together what is considered the Leng books. My issue is in the fact that I cannot stand Constance. It makes it hard to care about a lot of what's happening in this one. On the other hand I was sucked into the case featuring Coldmoon. And while the ending is a bit of a cliffhanger I loved it! It dropped my jaw, made me chuckle, and got me excited for the next book!

The Cabinet of Dr. Leng by Douglas Preston; Lincoln Child

This is a continuation of some past books. It leaves you hanging. Personally, I would wait for the sequel so I could read it all at once. Constance leaves Pendergast for her own reasons. Pendergast is distraught and avails himself of his favorite NYC detective to help him with Constance. As a sidebar, there is a case of missing native American artifacts from the museum.
I enjoyed the story. The plot is complex and needs several books to play out.
These two authors take you to some surprising places.

Awesome continuation from the end of the last book, starts off bit slow but definitely picks up from the half way point, Love how it connects to past books and builds more of the world that is Constance and Pendergast along with showing why Dr Leng was who he was. Definitely would recommend the book and can't wait to see where this story continues. Year is gonna take too long

I received an ARC copy of The Cabinet of Dr. Leng via #NetGalley

I was so happy to be able to get an ARC of this novel. I am a huge fan of the Pendergast books, and the previous one ended on the big cliffhanger. I will try to write about this one without many spoilers...but it will be hard.

You have been warned. Some spoilers lay ahead.

WHY DID THIS ONE END ON A CLIFFHANGER TOO?? I just about threw my Kindle through the window! The book ended right at the height of the action. And to end with the long overdue re-appearance of a certain characters? Douglas and Lincoln are just being cruel at this point.

Ranting aside, this has been one of their best books yet. I have a real love/hate thing with Constance. She's a great character and is good at grounding Pendergast. But at the same time she's incredibly selfish, immature, and at times emotionally manipulative. She bit off way more then she could ever chew, then gets mad when Pendergas swoops in to save her. I feel that with the way her character is, she will never be happy with Pendergast because love isn't enough for her. There is something fundamentally broken in her that cannot be fixed.

Unfortunately for Pendergast, he's going to end up taking the brunt of what happens in the next book out of a misplaced sense of guilt that she put in his head. He's given in to her pushing for a more romantic relationship, but he's clearly uncomfortable with it & trying not to hurt her. I don't doubt that he loves her, but its not in anyway romantic. I really hope in the next book he says enough with her. She needs to move on & grow up.

Readers always anxiously await the arrival of a new Prendergast novel. This one is no exception. But Prendergast is almost completely absent from this novel. I’ve been awaiting a book focusing on Constance Green and her story but thought Prendergast would be more involved. But wait, continue reading.

We get a thread of a story with FBI Agent Coldmoon, and another one involving sometime partner NYPD Lt. Vincent D'Agosta investigating at the Natural History Museum again. What!? Where’s Prendergast? Continue reading.

Just like the two threads of investigations, we also get thrown into the world of 19th-century New York City because Constance has traveled back to her own past to save her siblings’ lives. This brings us back to the storyline of Dr. Enoch Leng, and Constance’s history with him. Sit back and enjoy the story folks. But what about Prendergast? We will have to wait until the next book is released.

Thank you NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for a free digital copy in exchange for an honest review. I have never read a Preston and Child book before, and I absolutely loved it. Even though this was a part of a series, I never felt lost and could quickly grasp who the characters were and what they wanted. The action was nonstop, a complete page turner. I will definitely read more by these authors!

Whoa! Whoa! And Whoa!

What a cliffhanger this third book in a four book series leaves you on. I’m desperate for the conclusion now and waiting with bated breath.

This installment you find Constance Greene back in New York in 1880… stranded after a mishap with the multiverse machine stranding her there, but exactly where she wants to be to right so many wrongs that have been laid against her.

Agent Pendergrast finds himself bereft at the loss of Constance and in his scheming, all knowing and ever fascinating ways is making plans to follow Constance at whatever risk he must assume.

FBI Special Agent Coldmoon is dispatched to a shooting death on the Lakota Reservation of a tribe member that can make replicas of Lakota artifacts. The suspect list for him is narrow, but in true fashion, all is never what it seems when dealing with this motley crew.

And what of D’Agosta? Well he’s been dispatched to the freezing death of a museum curator. How are all these things connected? And what of Pendergrasts connection as well as Constance Greenes connection to the infamous serial killer Dr. Leng?

Well jump in this express train through the multiverse of time travel to follow all the strings and leads that will have you finding friends old and new, and ending with a cliffhanger you won’t see coming.

This is definitely one you don’t want to miss if you’re a Preston and Child’s fan. It’s definitely best to read this series in order in order to avail yourself of all the characters pasts and intricate relationships, but it can be read alone … if you like jumping in and figuring out the backstory as you go.

Thank you so much to #NetGalley, the publishers, and of course the talented writing team of Preston and Child for extending an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. This is a great way to start your new year in January of 2023!

My full review will be posted on all social media sites, blogs and retail upon release day!

** spoiler alert ** Huh, this is a tough one. There are things to like and things to like and things to hate about this book, but in the end, there is a deep frustration at the fact this isn't a whole book, this is the middle chapters of a longer story that is not interesting or satisfying as its own book.

This is a follow up to the rather hit and miss Bloodless from last year. At the end of that book Constance Green used a time machine to go back to 1880 NYC in order to save her sister who was killed by Pendergast's ancestor Enoch Leng. Got all that?

I once heard someone say that Poirot books were very boring when Poirot is not in them. I could say the same of Pendergast books. For the first half of the book Pendergast isn't really seen. The majority of the action takes place in 1880 with Constance working to free her family. There is also a subplot about a murder at the natural history museum being investigated by D'Agosta and its far to convenient relation to a murder on a reservation being investigated by Coldmoon. This feels like an interesting subplot until the authors seem to give up on it halfway through the book and just sort of quickly sum it up and bring the bad guy to justice in the final pages.

That first half is just absolutely dragged by Constance and Coldmoon, who are effective foils to Pendergast but generally uninteresting on their own. Nothing in this book makes me feel different about them. D'Agosta is a more fully formed character but even he can't carry much.

The second half of the book picks up the pace as Pendergast uses a scientist to repair the time machine and go after Constance. Unfortunately by the end, the story has gotten away from the authors and instead of wrapping it up quickly, they just end it.

That's right, they just end the book, basically mid scene. They seem to know it sucks because they put what amounts to an apology after the final page. I like the authors and I'm sure I'll read the next book to see how it turns out, but even they realize they did their readers dirty.

There is also a strange lack of interest in the whole project because of the multiverse idea the authors use to justify time travel and Constance meeting her younger self. Am I supposed to care if Mary Green is saved? Or if Leng is killed? If there are infinite universes and Constance alters one...who cares? I'm more interested in whether Pendergast can save her and get back to his own timeline.

Preston and Child have been very hit and miss for a while now. Unfortunately you can throw this one in the miss pile.

Thanks to Netgalley for the advanced review copy.

Can you change the past? That's what Constance Greene is attempting to do. This story picks up where Bloodless ends. I hadn't read Bloodless but I am remedying that now! Pendergast is still a fascinating character and I really need to catch up on the series.

I greatly anticipated the release of this book! After the cliff hanger in "Bloodless", I was anxious to know what happened next. "The Cabinet of Dr. Leng" picks up at the point that "Bloodless" ends with Constance having successfully traveled back to New York City in 1880. This book focuses on Constance, her history and family, and the dark side of 1880 New York. It is a thrilling, time-traveling adventure as only Preston and Child can deliver.

If it has been a while since you have read "Bloodless", I do recommend a quick re-read before starting this one.

Thank you to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for an advanced reader copy. I look forward to the next book in the Pendergast series!

Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child have done it again! Wow! Read this book! In fact if you haven’t read the Pendergast saga, do it! You won’t regret it! Dr Leng is a novel full of surprises and twists and the ending will surprise you guaranteed! I about threw my book at the end, what!? I am impatiently awaiting the next installment, good job Mr Preston and Child you have written yet another masterpeice!

Pendergast takes a backseat in the newest "Pendergast" novel. Constance is the focus here and after the ending of Bloodless, rightly so. Having said that, it took me longer to finish this Pendergast novel than it typically does. I did find the story a bit slow at times and didn't really have the "urge" to read it until the 75% mark.

The Pendergast novels have always teetered on the edge of the soap operatic, characters thought dead return, characters awaken from comas and discover they were pregnant and now have a child, not really, but this one did feel a touch overdone. And then the ending was completely undone.

Oh well, still pretty good and I know I'll read the next one.

Oh, you naughty authors! That ending was…everything!

This is a wonderful addition to the series. You have the return of some past characters, a truly heartbreaking story with Constance (I know some of you hate our lovely sociopathic beauty but you’re wrong), Pendergast and his oddly stiff emotional feels, and lots and lots of Proctor (butler/bodyguard/zaddy lol!) – yes I like Proctor.

Readers should know that the book does end on a cliffhanger (sorry), but it’s a logical and exciting one and I simply can’t wait for the next book. My problem is that I want the next book NOW and I have to wait and I hate that.

Too much fun!

Preston and Child do not disappoint in the highly anticipated The Cabinet of Dr. Leng. Building on storylines from The Cabinet of Curiosities and Bloodless, Constance Greene is on a mission to save her family from the horrible fate she knows will occur, only her trip back in time takes her to a different universe. Pendergast, calls on an old New York City friend to help him rescue Constance after resurrecting the broken time travel machine. While the preparation of the machine is taking place, we can't forget Coldmoon, who is now on his own assignment but still revolving in Pendergast's sphere.

The book has a slow pace at the beginning as Preston and Child world build in both present day and past New York. It has all of the historical details readers have come to know in the Pendergast novels, as well. The suspense and thrill at the end of the book is incredible. I just about threw my kindle across the room and let out some pent up frustration as I couldn't believe it. I'm already ready for the next book.

The Cabinet of Dr. Leng picks up where Bloodless has just ended and is such an enjoyable return to the series.

I’ve read the entirety of the Pendergast series (a few times now) as well as their other side books and series, and Pendergast is hands down my favorite series. I don’t know what I’ll do when the gents stop writing Pendergast and his world and friends, but I won’t think about that now.

For now, I’ll say this is a welcome addition with a completely different setting than we’ve seen in a Pendergast book before. We have a time jump! A really insane time jump! All of our favorite old and new characters making appearances (with the exception of a few that have their own starring roles in their own series now)!

If you’re a Pendergast fan, you’re already going to read this. We both know it. If you’re not, pick up the first book and get started. HURRY UP!

I was really thankful and lucky to grab an advanced copy of this book and blew through it. My only regret is that now I have even longer of a wait until the gents finish the next one. JUST enough time to re-read the series again? I think so.

Oh, and one more thing…that ending left my JAW ON THE FLOOR, y’all.

Thank you to NetGalley, Grand Central Publishing, and Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

2.5, rounded up to 3 stars. The last few book in this series have been slipping, in my opinion.

Frankly, the Pendergast story-line was much less compelling than the Agent Coldmoon story-line. I think the authors have ventured too far into the weird in the past few books. I do look forward to the next book in the series, largely to see Coldmoon's investigation play out. But Pendergast, unless the authors return him to his investigative duties, may have run his course for me.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for the opportunity to read the eARC.
