This book really keeps you guessing. I enjoyed the premise and read it all in one sitting.
Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the advanced copy of the book.
Marnie Thorpe is at Liars Anonymous for one reason, and it isn’t to make friends. Still, when Claire finds herself in trouble, Marnie steps in to help. Claire insists she's being stalked, so Marnie lets her stay at her house. She’s half convinced the whole thing is just another lie, until Claire turns up dead.
Claire's murder unlocks some repressed memories for Marnie, memories of another young woman. Her instinct tells her someone from her group is responsible, but how do you get the truth from a group of liars?
This is my third (I think) book from this author, and I love her style. Great storytelling with believable characters every time! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my early read. LIARS ANONYMOUS is available now.
Who ever heard of a support group for compulsive and pathological liars? Well, this is how the characters in this novel all know each other.
The meetings are held by a professor who studies this kind of behaviour, and many of the attendees are there due to a court order. And this sets the stage for what’s about to follow.
The story begins through the POV of Marnie, one of the attendees at the meeting. But she isn’t really there to get better. She’s there to suss everyone out.
Marnie offers to give a lift home one day to flighty air-head Claire, another attendee, who has just announced to the group that she is newly pregnant. But when they approach her apartment, Claire ducks her head down and shouts for Marnie to keep driving.
Claire ends up staying at Marnie’s place that night. But when Marnie gets up, Claire is gone.
Marnie doesn’t hear from Claire for the next week, so she decides to go to Claire’s apartment to check in on her.
To Marnie’s surprise, she is met with another attendee of Liars Anonymous, a neighbour of Claire’s, who is clearly stoned and hasn’t seen Claire for some time.
Marnie decides to call in at Claire’s place of work, and discovers that her “Claire” doesn’t work there – another similar looking Claire does.
Another time, Marnie decides to try Claire’s apartment again, and this time neighbour Eddie comes with her. But they find her dead body.
Marnie appears to suspect the boyfriend, who others from Liars Anonymous seem to know about. Marnie tries to get Eddie to persuade people to speak out to the police.
But then the novel changes, and instead of seeing things through Marnie’s eyes, the story is then retold from the eyes of someone else in the group, Naomi.
It gives an entirely new feel to the novel, and starts to shed more light on the Liars, their lives, and what they get up to.
Everyone suspects everyone else or is angry at being lied to. Marnie and Naomi both think the other knows something they’re not telling, and they do some digging of their own. But with their background, you have to ask whether they need to keep quiet, whether they would frame someone, or whether they have something to hide.
A suspect is eventually called in for questioning. And you would think that means the case is closed. But, the story keeps going with several twists and turns that I did not see coming. These people are not just liars but tricksters, imposters, criminals, and there’s a murderer in the mix to boot.
There’s a satisfying conclusion to the story in the epilogue, which is written first from Claire’s POV, and then from her neighbour, and the murderer is finally revealed.
I really enjoyed this book, especially the last quarter of it when more insights and truths about the characters just kept coming. It became quite the page turner, and I just had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next.
Some of the scenes felt more drawn out than was necessary, and it may not have started terribly well, but the end of the book more than made up for that, and I would definitely recommend it.
Liars Anonymous is a fun and interesting read that will keep you on the edge of your seat!
Nothing is what it seems in this story, and I could not put this book down at all
Fantastic read and so well written. When everybody is a liar but one is also a killer and you can’t even trust the narrator. It sounds a lot but it was easy to read.
Welcome to liars anonymous where everyone is a pathological or compulsive liar. Marnie Thorpe joined the group and never intended to make friends. One girl from group, Claire, needs a ride home after group so Marnie obliges. When they get to Claire’s apartment someone is outside, Claire’s vengeful ex, or so she says. Marnie let’s Claire crash on her couch and when she’s gone in the morning Marnie doesn’t think much of it. Then, Claire misses group and nobody can get a hold of her. When she is finally found, she’s dead. Marnie thinks someone in group did it. Will she ever get to the bottom of this mystery when it involves a bunch of liars?
.
I looooved this book. It is told through Marnie’s POV and Naomi’s, who is in group because of a court mandate. The first part of the book is told by Marnie. It makes you love Marnie and feel for her when you realize a very big tragedy happened in her life. It also makes you think Naomi is a stuck-up brat. The second part is told by Naomi. This makes you start to feel sorry for her and wonder what the heck she did wrong to end up in group. It also makes you see Marnie from her eyes and gets you wondering if the whole first half is just Marnie telling lies. The whole thing weaves together until the truth finally comes out. The ending is straight bananas and I didn’t see it coming at all. You think you have some closure and then you read the epilogue 🤯. This book was seriously amazing and I highly suggest it for a thriller, whodunnit, is anyone telling the truth, read
Brilliant!
If you are a reader of thrillers and haven't read this book, I highly recommend you do. Full of twists that'll keep you gripped till the very last page.
Marnie Thorpe lives alone apart from her cat, Mr Peabody, & works as a home help for the elderly. She also attends Liars Anonymous, a self-help group run by Dr Quick. Some of her fellow 'Liars' include Claire, Oliver, Naomi, Ki, & Eddie. One day at the meeting, Claire confides to the group that she is pregnant, although most of them disbelieve her - they are all liars after all & Claire tends to lie for attention. Marnie offers to give Claire a ride home, & when Claire spots her ex-boyfriend skulking outside her apartment, Marnie ends up offering her a place to stay for the night too. The next morning Claire is gone & although Marnie texts her, Claire never even reads the messages. A few days later she goes to Claire's apartment & is surprised to find that another member of the group, Eddie, lives across the hall. Eddie hasn't seen or heard from Claire either. They try the door of Claire's apartment & it opens, & going inside they find Claire's body. It seems she died several days ago & it looks like murder.
Naomi is a forty-something mom who's attending Liars Anonymous as part of her sentencing for fraud. Her rich successful husband kicked her out of their home & she only sees their teenage daughter once a week. Marnie & Eddie realise that Naomi knows who Claire was seeing & who the father of her baby could have been, but she refuses to tell the police - mainly because the guy has something on her & it could ruin her progress towards getting her family back. Marnie decides she has to get justice for Claire & ne-one can be allowed to get in the way.
This is an intriguing read as the reader is warned at the start that you can't trust a word that any of the characters are saying. The first section is from Marnie's point of view, until midway when it switches to Naomi. It's jarring at first as the reader has gotten used to Marnie's narration, but it's interesting to see the difference between what Marnie says happens at certain events, with how Naomi sees it. Who is telling the truth? Are any of them telling the truth? It starts off quite slowly but gathers pace, & by the end, all hell has broken loose & there's reveal after reveal. In fact there's perhaps too much going on in the finale. If you like your reads dark with unreliable narrators, then you'll probably like this.
TW: lying, stalking, kidnapping, brief mentions of historic child abuse.
My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op, for the opportunity to read an ARC.
“We are Liars Anonymous, a support group for pathological and compulsive liars. Every person in this room is a known liar, high means not a single one of us can be trusted—including me.”
Welcome to Liars Anonymous, the support group for compulsive and pathological liars. Marnie Thorpe is at Liars Anonymous for one reason, and it isn’t to make friends. Still, when beautiful, ephemeral Claire finds herself in trouble, Marnie steps in to help. Claire says she’s being stalked, so Marnie let’s her crash at her house. She’s half convinced that its all a lie - until Claire turns up dead. Claire’s murder triggers something for Marnie. Memories of another loss, another young women taken too soon. Her gut tells her someone from their group is responsible, and that none of them are safe.
The first half of this book was a little slow paced and redundant to me. The constant back and forth about whether we could trust anything the narrator said had me questioning whether I wanted to continue reading. Surprisingly, the second half of the book picked up and I was genuinely shocked after reading the epilogue. This was definitely an interesting read. I rated “Liars Anonymous” 3.5 ⭐️‘s.
The difference between how you see yourself and how others see you is actually pretty profound once you start looking...
A SHORT PREVIEW:
While in a therapy group called Liars Anonymous, the main POV, Marnie, who's signed herself up for the class, narrates her seemingly normal comings and goings. As her relationships with the people in her group take turns, you start to realize that there is something more sinister at play when a fellow group therapy member turns up dead. As Marnie is increasingly caught in a web of lies, she starts to be triggered into reliving trauma-suppressed memories of another girl that died under suspicious circumstances. Read the full unraveling of the characters' psyches and find your heart beating faster and faster with every lie uncovered.
MUSINGS:
- I've always maintained that what others think of you is none of your business... unless you're an ACTUAL PSYCHOPATH? And while psychopaths definitely deserve at least some pity because many times, environmental / 'lack of nature' factors create their horrible tendencies... it's still wild and semi-crazy to think about how many people walk around every day on the verge of straight-up snapping. I have a few other recommendations for books from a psycho's POV, and this one is definitely one of the better reads!!
- This is the first thriller in a while that I've read where you truly need to read every page and not skim. You can't skim even a sentence because you might miss something so crucial!!!
- If you're the type that loves true crime podcasts or movies like Inception - you will absolutely love Marissa Finch's Liars Anonymous! Every time I turned around, there was another tiny clue and things that I picked up on but only made sense at the end of the book!!! Gah, I need someone to read this just so that we can talk about it together!!!
- Another thing this book did was highlight the absolute frigid nature of humanity these days. Do we notice when our neighbors go missing? Do we know what people are really like behind their manicured lawns and crisply painted front doors? This book will make you that suspicious old lady neighbor!!
- Other questions this book made me consider: How far do you go for strangers? How do I rationalize gut feelings about strangers? (You'll understand what I mean when you start to read!)
- The ending is EVERYTHING. The last 30 pages, I literally read 3 times to make sure I picked up on everything. I can't even explain how good it was?! And if you start thinking there's just a lot going on... well, there is, and that's what makes this story so attention-grabbing!
FAVORITE QUOTE:
'There's a reason most probation terms often forbid fraternizing with other felons. It's too easy to get ideas. Too easy to find people willing to act on them with you.'
Notes:
- Alternating POVs
- Unreliable narrators
- Character and plot-driven
- Available on Kindle Unlimited
- Satisfyingly wrapped up ending. (None of that left to the imagination stuff!!)
- Trigger Warnings: childhood s3xual abuse
A group of liars, some of which are court ordered to be there...all discussing their lies...
So who is telling the truth?
Marnie offers to give Claire a ride after the meeting, but when pulling up to her apartment, Clair sees her ex-boyfriend, so Marnie takes her home with her....despite knowing she's a liar. The next morning, she wakes up and Clair is gone.
But then Naomi is curious about Marnie and she investigates....and finds out the truth about Marnie...
This is a group of liars, so it's lie upon lie....
It's a fun read, full of lies and truths and lies. A fast read and a fun ride all the way through.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this book.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of Liars Anonymous.
I thought this was a clever book with interesting characters. I appreciated the difference in perspectives told by the 2 main characters and the use of unreliable narrators. I enjoyed the twists and turns and would highly recommend this to others!
What a concept!!! I loved this, its very character driven with not a lot of events unfolding but i loved the fact these characters were all liars so you never quite knew who to trust! A really nice spin on the traditional "who dun ut"
This is a good character lead book. It is full of good thought-out twists. I really enjoyed reading it and will definitely be recommending.
Loved the premise of this, unreliable narrator, liars anonymous, can’t trust anyone. Murder, lies secrets.
Loved the twists and turns, got a bit annoyed towards the end because I wasn’t loving the resolution but the final final twist absolutely shocked me
Thought the beginning of the character swap was a bit much repetition-wise but then LOVED it as it started to diverge.
Shades of girl on the train. Super interesting.
I thought this book was fun and a little crazy but it totally worked. A group of dysfunctional people and a slightly unreliable narrator, it was a very interesting experience xx
Fun, clever read that keeps you guessing until the very end. How could a book full of compulsive liars be any other way? Recommended for mystery and suspense lovers. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
Talk about unreliable characters, my favorite kind in a suspense book!
Liars Anonymous by Marissa Finch features a support group for pathological and compulsive liars. The book alternates between two members of this club so of course the reader is kept guessing every step of the way. I loved it. I want to be surprised and enjoy the ride on a literary roller coaster.
Here’s the plot:
Marnie Thorpe is at Liars Anonymous for one reason, and it isn’t to make friends. Still, when beautiful, ephemeral Claire finds herself in trouble, Marnie steps in to help. Claire is being stalked, she says, so Marnie lets her crash at her house. She’s half convinced the whole thing is just another lie — until Claire turns up dead.
Claire’s murder unlocks something in Marnie. Memories of another loss, another young woman taken too soon. Her gut tells her someone from their group is responsible, and that none of them are safe. But how can she uncover the truth when she’s surrounded by lies?
How can she catch a killer when everyone around her is a liar?
Give me all the books with lies and deception. I can’t get enough.
A superb fast paced thriller. I absolutely loved the story and couldn’t stop reading it. It’s perfect for all readers, especially thriller lovers.
In the novel we meet a group of people who attend a liars anonymous group. They are all there for different reasons. When one of the participants is murdered three of them try to figure out what has happened.
We follow two main POVs in the book. First there is marnie and then Naomi. We get their perspective on the same events, and sometimes it got a bit repetitive for this reason. It was still interesting, but I might have liked it more if there was a bit more back and forth, letting the whole story unfold.
Being in a group for liars was an interesting idea, but I must admit it made me a bit skeptical. Would such a group really be a thing? I can’t quite imagine it. But putting that aside, it made you instantly wonder who was lying and priming you to pay extra attention. When you came to the end, you realized there were a lot of actors in the group, and when I thought about some of the reactions described early in the book, I though ‘well, is it possible to react like that when..’
It’s very hard to write a book where the POVS are hiding things, because it demands that everything makes sense in the end, and unfortunately in liars anonymous it often didn’t. I also found the intricate web of different things going through on at the same time a bit too far-fetched. There were so many unlikely scenarios. It felt like the author tried hard to write a book that would shock you, and that was a bit off-putting.
On the plus side, the writing style was to my liking. Your eyes flew through the text, nothing blocking the flow which was nice. I liked the pacing too, there was always a reason for reading on.
I will read more of the authors work, since I can see she has potential.
