Haha well where do I start. I think that it’s so relatable for me age wise, cats, Netflix etc it’s why I just had to choose it.
Did not disappoint, it was a cute read. Had me chuckling in places too.
Also well done on the mental illness side. Handled so well.
Really enjoyable
I am writing this review for Net Galley. I really enjoyed this romance story.
We are following two women who have been best friends since elementary school. Julie is confident, which Kate is not. This is just one example of how opposite these two women are. However, they are always there for each other through thick and thin. Kate is 43 years old and has not had a relationship in years. It never bothered her until she went to this wedding where she got very drunk and made a fool of herself. She decided to make a goal that she was going to find someone to kiss by the end of the year for New Years.
Kate's friend Julie helps her set up an online dating profile. She finds herself very busy going on lousy dates. During this time, we learn from Kate's past why she is content not being in a relationship. On top of her online dating, she is going to a job that she just hates every day. However, she has two good guy friends at her job that support her. Kate also tried speed dating.
This story was so cute. It reminds me of the movie Never Been Kissed. I loved main character Kate and how the author decided to portray her as 43 years old. I really appreciated that the author added some of Kate's past to the story to better understand why she was where she was in life. Overall if you are looking for a fun easy read then I highly recommend this.
Such a unique book, I loved the plot and oh my god the characters we're so amazing!! I definitely will be recommending it!!
This book was not what I expected, but I really enjoyed it. The main character, Kate, is a single woman in her forties. On New Year’s Eve, she drinks too much and pledges to find “somebody to kiss” by next year’s NYE. The book has several flashbacks for a few of the characters, which helps you to understand their actions and their mental health challenges. I enjoyed Kate’s journey as she explored online data, speed dating, friendships, and love (I mean, it is a romance novel). I appreciated that the author looked at mental health disorders is a mature and positive manner. In addition, not only did Kate grow in respect to her relationships, but she also learned to stand up for herself in her professional life. My only critique would be the way the different points of view were written. I enjoy books with different POV, but the chapters were randomly assigned. I think I would have enjoyed it more if the chapters had equally alternated between the three main characters.
Thank you to NetGalley and BookGoSocial for the free copy in return for an honest review.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a hard one to rate. It started off really well and was funny and engaging. However, as time went on, I found the main character to be annoying and really lacking in many ways. I just couldn't become invested in her at all.
What I LOVED and what kept me reading was the way the author handled mental illness. I particularly appreciated the discussion about how we sometimes need medicine to fix a chemical imbalance. Overall, it had funny moments along with serious reflection and it was well written.
Very good book, funny and cute story, highly recommended this one!
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the book
While the outcome was predictable by the time I finished the first chapter, I really enjoyed this book. Being a single woman in her 40s who hasn't had a date in a billion years...Kate, the main character in this book is pretty much me in a nutshell...Always imagining the outcome 20 years in the future when the first word or thought hasn't even been uttered, wondering why it's so hard, hoping to somehow run into the guy who is mesmerized by your quirks and charm, what's with "Hey" , "How's your day?", etc conversations (you'll get it when you read the book)...
Honestly, I think Kate is probably one of the most relatable characters I've ever encountered in a book I was reading, LOL. I don't know if it makes me feel better to be able to relate to the main character in this book so much because it means that it isn't "just me" or if I should feel bad because maybe we are the extreme end of the spectrum. I too can relate to Kate's best friend Julie, not her lifestyle, but her attitude towards men and wonder why other women feel it's odd that I would be totally fine just having someone to hang out with instead of looking for my everlasting love for life. I also related strongly to Julie and the fact that an event occurring so early in my life, had a lasting impact in my willingness to get close to men...probably even till this day.
I don't want to give away too much information, but if you are looking for a read that dives into both serious topics, one of the standard girl being totally oblivious to the obvious stories, which can also give you a good laugh, I would definitely recommend this book.
i think a lot of women who have experienced the joys of online dating (insert sarcasm) will enjoy this book.😅
while single at a wedding on New Years Eve, Kate drunkenly makes a pact with herself that she will have someone to kiss by the end of the year. with help from her friend, Julie, she reluctantly signs up for online dating in search of Mr Right.
💁🏻♀️what i liked
-the friendship between Julie and Kate
-Julie’s brother, Ben
-it was relatable, comical, and realistic
-the discussion about mental illness and the realities of living with it
This book just came out on September 23. I highly recommend picking it up!
This was pretty good despite its trite simplistic initial premise. I liked the character of Ben & his longstanding persevering love, and also the middle-of-Canada setting, which is not somewhere you usually find rom-coms set. I actually wish they’d made more of the location.
The two main characters though were a bit tough to love - we find out some reasons why, but overall, they both seem to have some pretty big problems that are glossed over a lot.
Overall, I liked it, but Kate did not inspire tooo much empathy & they characters did seem to act younger than their 40+ ages, though I do appreciate a rom-com featuring main characters in this age range.
This book handles some tough topics. Make sure to review the trigger warnings before reading the book.
Overall this was a nice book to read
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Someone to kiss was an ok read. It touched on some important things such as anxiety, rape and self esteem. I liked the message that ran throughout the book of not changing for others, but I wasn’t particularly attached to any of the main characters and I didn’t find them particularly likeable. The book was funny though and still an enjoyable way to pass some time.
A sweet story, with a rather predictable formula, but still very enjoyable. Whilst there was nothing truly innovative, it was well written with likeable characters and it left me with a happy feeling.
Kate wakes up after New Year's Eve with a massive hangover, a dubious photo, and a napkin where she has vowed to wake up the following year with someone to kiss! Her best friend Julie offers to support her, and helps her to create an online dating presence, whilst Julie's brother Ben watches over the two girls to ensure they are alright. Julie gives the appearance of being always fun, incredibly beautiful and sailing through life too easily, but is hiding a secret. Ben has been through troubles of his own but has arrived in a good place. All three are hoping for different things by the following New Year's Eve, and all want to find their own happiness.
A sweet, quirky story, with a high feel good factor.
I absolutely adored this gorgeous romantic read. It was so charming. With great characters and a wonderfully romantic storyline that will have you smiling from ear to ear and your heart bursting with happiness if you are a romance fan don't miss this one.
What a charming tale! Such a rollercoaster reading this book was. When Kate, who is in her 40s and is still unmarried, attends a wedding on New Year's Eve, she drunkenly makes a pledge to have someone to kiss the following year.
The protagonist Kate and her friends set out on a journey of self-acceptance and healing in the novel about loving oneself as much as finding love in others.
I truly appreciate Kate's character since she was genuine and didn't attempt to alter herself for a man. Even yet, I did find myself feeling a little annoyed with Kate, especially when she still lacked the courage to do something about the possibility standing in front of her the entire time. But it also helped to give her character a more grounded quality.
I really liked all of the characters in this since they were all so well crafted. Ben was quiet and how his tale unfolded. Although Julie's story had a harsher tone, I was deeply moved by her throughout the entire book.
I loved the author's focus too on mental health and anxiety, and the hints of vulnerability they revealed by using several points of view gave me more understanding of these weighty subjects and the hidden battles many people wage.
She demonstrated the effects they had on the person, people around them, the power of a support system, as well as the resistance to admit you need help, particularly if you don't think you deserve to recover.
Even if the writing style is not my favorite and has certain flaws, I believe you may still enjoy the story's tempo and narrative.
This book is certainly not the kind of romance you had hoped for at first, but in my perspective, it is more of a journey for someone who feels lost and behind especially given the pressures of their society and anyone might connect to it.
Nevertheless, everything worked out in the end. A delightful book surprise.
Thank you to NetGalley and BookGoSocial for providing an ARC in return for honest review.
I was surprised by this author's committment to address tough issues in a what many would just consider another romance novel. But the layering of deep, mental health issues with the possibility of a true loving relationship was more than welcoming.
At times, it was a bit disjointed. However, it all came together in the end. A happy surprise of a book.
Thank you to Netgalley and BooksGoSocial for providingan eARC for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to read an ARC of "Someone to Kiss", writtne by Jamie Anderson. It was released on September 23rd, 2022!
Overall, I rated this novel a 4.5/5 stars!
This book tells the story of Kate, who is 40-ish years old, and makes a New Years' resolution that the following year, she will have someone to kiss on the special holiday so she doesn't actually feel so alone. This may prove to be more difficult than expected, though - because Kate's life is mainly focused on Netflix and spending time with her cats. Needless to say, she has no idea what she's getting herself into once she dips her toe into the waters of dating apps and speed-dating.
Will Kate have someone to kiss next year? Read to find out!
Who doesn't love a book about new intentions/beginnings/new years resolutions, etc?! I do!
This was cute, a great, simple, easy to pick up and read kind of story.
I think we were aiming for this middle age love, but come on!!!!! She was in her 40s!!!! Not her 60s looking for love. This was the one thing I didn't love.
Other than that I thought it was a sweet story and one that was easy to cruise through in a day or two.
Loved reading this book its described as a hilarious and heartening romcom but it is definitely so much more, its like reading someone's journal knowing all their thoughts the highs and the lows, all the characters were so well written and you could feel how they were feeling at each point during the story. I was hooked from the start and could not put it down
This book is so relatable. I see myself in the main character. As I’ve gotten older I’ve found myself giving up on the idea of dating and sadly I don’t have my own Ben.
I absolutely loved all of Julie’´s dates. I’ve had friends who’ve had similar experiences to this. Why do I even need to go on actual dates when I can just read about them here?
I also want to note that I was proud of Julie. I could see her growth and I was internally screaming for joy at what she did at the end. I’m so pleased that despite her insecurities she does not remain a pushover.
I also like that we saw short glimpses of the other main characters lives and thoughts. It was just enough to know what they were going through without being confusing and taking away from the story.
I appreciate that this book was available on NetGalley and that I had the opportunity to read it.
If you minus a few drinks, and add a couple extra cats, then I think I may have just seen my future play out in this front seat view to Kate’s dating life, unfolding in a splash of chaos and awkward memories.
Kate is desperate for someone to love her as fiercely as she loves, and, after a few too many drinks on New Years and an unconscious pledge scrawled on a napkin, she finds herself diving deep into the chaos of the singles scene in search of the one.
In this story about loving yourself as much as finding love in others, Kate and her friends embark on a journey of self acceptance and healing. Packed full of laughs, awkwardness, and unrestrained thoughts, Somebody to Kiss was an often light and entertaining read about the trenches of dating and the search for Mr. Right. A search that was in no way easy, and in many ways relatable as a reader.
I appreciated Anderson’s spotlight on mental health and anxiety, and the whispers of vulnerability disclosed through their use of different points of view allowed an additional insight into these heavy topics and the silent battles many fight. While I did like the few chapters from Ben and Julie’s POV, and the opportunity to explore their learnings in loving themselves, I wasn’t entirely sold on the idea of the dual POV as it was and would have preferred to see a little more consistency in these to give it that seamless effect. As it stood, the scarcity left me craving more, and I hope we will be seeing more of Julie and the rest of her journey unfolding in future works.
Featuring all the laughs and awkward moments of your favourite rom-com, and a cast of 40+ characters, Someone to Kiss is suitable for all seeking that extra rush today.
TW: mentions of rape (recalled, not on page)
