Very Enjoyable 90-Day Devotional
Oswald Chambers has written a very good 90-Day Devotional. The topics discussed in the devotional are all biblical based and backed by pertinent scriptures.
This devotional was very easy to read, understand, and a delight to read. It would make a great gift for anyone or a worthy reference devotional that can be used at any time.
I love devotionals, and I highly recommend this one.
Thank you NetGalley and Our Daily Bread Publishing for accepting my request to read and review My Utmost for His Highest.

For the purposes of this review, I want to share. My personal copy of My Utmost for His Highest is a one year reading that took three to four years. Post-it notes, tabs, taped, glued and stapled notes holding my thoughts are attached in what is now the rubber-banded loose pages paper clipped and placed in a large Ziplock Baggy to keep them. There is some resemblance of a book, the covers are readable, and God alone can read my handwriting as I've written in the margins, the line spaces, and over the printed text.
This devotional has nice features and is published by the well-known Our Daily Bread organization. I am not a theologian, nor did I attend a seminary. I study and I like one source consistently throughout Christian/Biblical material. I am not an expert. I do know interpretations vary.
Ephesians 6:11:
KJV -- Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
NIV-- Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.
Changing for readability purposes the English leaves an opening for error in translation, both source and English changes I've documented above.
There is a lot to be learned in this devotional, and it can take 90 days to years to read, resonate, and do your own text comparison.
I would buy this for myself, and will. I prefer a physical copy. Gifting is different: I want to be comfortable that the material is consistent, and different sources leads to manufacturing truths.
I grew up watching my mum read from the Daily Bread Daily Devotionals, and though she couldn't always afford to buy fresh copies, she would do the same three months over to have that special time with God each day. I admired that in my mum, so was delighted to pick up My Utmost for His Highest by the same publisher.
I love the simple, straightforward nature of each devotion and the glossary of terms that is helpful for the new reader. or someone who hasn't read the work of God in a while. I like that it is a great choice for new and old christians alike and has simple messages that speak straight to the heart.
This version of My Utmost for His Highest is a 90-day devotional that condenses many of Oswald Chambers' fantastic and deeply intellectual writings into a quick and easy read. I read half of it in one sitting, as my introduction to Chambers' book, and plan on picking up the full version next. Each entry is easy to follow naturally from one thought to the next, building on one another. This would be an excellent introductory gift to Chambers' writings, excellent for anyone wanting to take their spiritual journey to a deeper level.
I have enjoyed Oswald Chambers’ My Utmost for His Highest for over forty years. This modern edition makes the wording more understandable, and pairing these devotions with the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible further reduces barriers to grasping the heart of the messages.
This book includes the backstory of the lives of Chambers and his wife, and how this time-honored devotional came to be written.
I don’t like that this edition is so far only available in a condensed 3-month book. It is nicely bound and set to be released just in time to target gift buyers for graduation and Father’s Day.
The full volume is slated to be available in the fall. That’s when I’ll get mine, unless I wait for the convenience of the e-book.
A classic worth while! This book has been around for decades. It's inspirational writing will cause you to take a moment to consider, again, God's calling.
A revised edition of the classic. This is a 90 day devotional with a modern rendition of Oswald Chambers’ classic work. It is one of the most compelling writings in Christian literature. A must read.
I had a really hard time reading this book in the format in which it was shared with me. I couldn't tell where one devotional ended or the next one began. It was strange indeed. Therefore, I am unable to actually give feedback on the book itself.
Updated language and NIV Bible translation make the teachings from Oswald Chambers’ My Utmost For His Highest accessible to the contemporary reader. This Modern Classic Edition is a valuable resource reaching a wider audience demographic.
My Utmost for His Highest Modern Day version is a rewriting of the Christian classic by Oswald Chambers. It takes a portion of his original devotions and rewrites them in a modern vernacular making them more accessible for people than the more formal language and denser, weightier topics of the original.
The Scripture for each devotion is in the New International Version of the Bible, instead of the older King James Version. This a 90-day devotional as opposed to the original 366 day format. This devotion is definitely a more user-friendly version in comparison to the King James Version and offers insights and teachings to deepen your faith. I did find the writings to be a bit disjointed and each day’s selections not only short, but also unrelated to one another. I think this devotional has value in any form, and has been a favorite of countless others throughout the ages, but It’s not one that has always worked for me personally due to it’s rigid nature and stringent tone.
My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers is one of those books that it is timeless. This updated devotional holds true to it’s reputation with meaningful devotional thoughts based in scripture with updated language. It is easily understandable and very helpful for a deepening understanding of scripture and how it can be applied to your everyday living. #netgalley #MyUtmostforHisHighest
This is hard to review because some of the readings have great insight, but some have points so trivial that they came across almost as patronizing. The overall way in which the book is put together makes each day feel like being dropped into the middle of a conversation, rather than starting from a beginning; I guess it's that, to me, the verses don't always seem to tie in well with the elaboration provided by the author. I was really thrown for a loop when the author claimed that Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son was a mistake, which I'll reflect upon to see if I agree with, but my understanding of that story has always been basically not what the author is saying about it.
The short readings are handy for getting a small dose of spiritual growth to ponder throughout the day, and there are great reminders throughout (like the repeated principal of waiting on God). This overall isn't a book that I'd purchase for myself or anyone else, as I believe there are far better ones already available, but it was good to dive into it and examine what it has to offer.
Chambers’ treasured book is condensed a rewritten into this beautiful 90 day devotional. I have to admit this version is an easier read with the NIV being used instead of the KJV, but there is still so much lovely, rich teaching and left me feeling inspired after each reading. I think this book would be great as a personal devotional, and also as a family devotional.
This devotional by Chambers is a classic. This edition is beautifully arranged for ease of use and the artwork contains a modern aesthetic. Great resource for those looking for supplemental reading to the Bible for the devotional times.
I use this book for a daily devotional as a part of my bible study. I have bought and read two different copies of it. Obviously, Oswald Chambers was one of the finest Christian writers who ever lived. He has been gone for almost 100 years now. But still his writings are classic and faithful today, just as when he first wrote them. His understanding of the scriptures was simply wonderful, considering his young age, and the times in which he lived. And he not only talked the Bible and the Christianity, but he inspired and walked it also, giving his life in service to the British troops in WWI. Such a great tool for growing in your faith! One will not find a finer example of Christian writing than this, truly a great collection of works from which to learn.
I just reviewed My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers. #MyUtmostforHisHighestModernClassicEdition #NetGalley. Thank Netgalley for an Advance copy for my honest review.
I requested this book for my own selfish reasons. I read this book many years ago but wanted to revisit it. I quickly looked through it but didn’t finish because I was expecting something else. While I love that this book has been updated, I forgot that every entry has a date. I wish there was a format that didn’t have dates. I know, like a devotional, it is to be read every day but sometimes I am not diligent.
This updated version provides devotionals that are to the point and provide much to meditate on during the day and beyond. The 90-day format will allow the reader to repeat it fun to four times during the year providing their spiritual life with many challenging thoughts. As there are no dates indicated, the reader may start at any point during the year. Whether it is used for 90 days or 12 months, the reader will come away changed.
This book is an excellent devotional for personal use or as a gift.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley but the thoughts expressed are my own.
My Utmost For His Highest: A 90-Day Gift Devotional, Modern Classic Edition by Oswald Chambers. Book review.
In this updated book, the language is written to blend with the New International Version (NIV) Bible. You’ll notice this is a 90-day book and not the original 366 daily format. It’s a shorter version of the beloved devotional. Many will find this easier to read as the King James Version is replaces by the NIV. Yet, fans of the classic devotional might prefer the original writings.
As a fan of devotional writings, I do enjoy seeing the full Bible verse on the devotional page. This traditional format is helpful for a daily devotional experience.
I have gifted many copies of the 366 version of My Utmost For His Highest. The book is wonderful in classic or the new 90 day modern format. In either format, the authority in writing, discernment, and conviction remain timeless. A fantastic author for all to read!
I received an Advanced Reader Copy from Netgalley.
This book tends to be very legalistic. It is not an easy read for that reason. Some will enjoy this book , however I did not.
I think that there is a place for this book. I would not part with the original version of this book.
Because this has been “rewritten” to be modern and for me rather simplified, I would utilize this for my kids. For example I would read the original version and have them do their own devotional using this book and come back together. That way we can marry the two together for a very rich family time. I think there is a lot lost in the modern version but the NIV verses and some modern language changes are perfect for kids.
I’d have received an ARC in order to review this book. All opinions are my own.
