This book was mostly suspenseful and an enjoyable read. It was not my favorite but I would recommend it to others.

A great story with a twist at the end.

A small town with big lies.
This story is a page turner from start to finish.
A story about love, lies, manipulation, drugs and death.

I loved the relationship between Jenna and Olivia.
The way they connected upon meeting and how that friendship opened up Olivia’s mind to the life she was living in.

Just a good, solid story.

I had difficulty getting into this book and thought it was okay but underwhelming. Nothing incredibly memorable but well written nonetheless.

What happened to the 3 girls who disappeared one night on their way home - and what does the 4th girl who was left behind know?

I enjoyed this thriller. It kept me guessing for a fair chunk of the book. The POV is mostly between Olivia, the girl left behind, and a journalist who's come to town twenty years after the disappearance to do a story on the mystery. I liked both of their characters, but particularly the journalist, Jenna, was compelling.

I think this could have been a 4 star book for me if some things hadn't gotten in the way. For one, we suddenly get some flashbacks to a different group of people in the middle of the book. This was distracting and also gave away a lot of the mystery. For another, some the answer to the mystery of where the girls were was underwhelming although the mystery of why it happened was more interesting.

A huge thank you to the author and the publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

Another wonderful page-turning mystery from Claire Douglas. After being so pleasantly surprised by The Couple at No. 9, I was excited to pick this one up.

Once again, we have a story with dual timelines, a mystery from long ago, and missing persons. Douglas writes with such care about these troubling circumstances, and the characters feel very realistic. I liked that the main character was a journalist searching for the truth. That's a trope that typically works well for me. And of course, I love a small English town, as well as the slight folk horror elements of a small town being so unwelcoming to an outsider. This is my catnip. If you like any or all of these elements, pick up this book stat!! You will find a new favorite author.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an early copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Good story and twists. Intriguing. Eerie at times. Atmospheric. Good writing.

Ive been reading this for more than a year noww coz it was that slow paced. And I took a lot of breaks from reading because it dragged so much but the good thing is even though i took those breaks whenever I came back to it I remembered everything so I dint have to go back and reread . I never woudlve seen the twist coming but I wasnt shocked or anything because it took so long for me to get to itt.

This thriller was taught and a real page turner. I was confused by the Thailand story for a while, although I knew eventually it would pay off, and it certainly did. I really liked Jenna and was rooting for her throughout the story. The only reason I knocked a star off was because something about the ending felt like a let down, although all threads were resolved. I think I just wanted something for the missing girls. Still a great read!

This kept me reading but the end got all weird and convoluted. It was ok but not the best. The inserted scenes didn’t add too much to the story.

After reading the description of this book I really hoped to enjoy this book but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. This book follows Jenna a journalist who had come to town to interview Olivia. Olivia survived a horrible accident after all her friends died.

This book was so hard for me to get into something interesting would happen I’d start to get into the book the would get bored not long after. I also really had a hard time caring about the characters. Overall this book was a little too much of a slow burn for me. I would like to thank NetGalley and the publishers for a chance to read this book for an honest review.

The Girls Who Disappeared by Claire Douglas - 3.5
General Fiction (Adult) - Mystery & Thrillers

A journalist investigating a 20-year-old mystery involving a car crash finds out her life may be in danger from digging too deep.

When Oliva wakes up after a car crash, she learns that three friends who were with her are missing.
Jenna, the journalist, is investigating the disappearance for an episode in her podcast. I enjoyed this character and her drive to uncover the truth of the car accident even when some of the residents of the town are not happy about her sniffing around.
I love a mystery story, the twists, turns, shocking truths and the suspense leading up the end. This book was a slow read, which made the suspense fall short. Overall a good read and would still recommend to others.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read this book!

This was a solid mystery with lots of twists and a host of characters who were surprisingly well-fleshed-out for being such a wide cast. I had my suspicions, but I was still ultimately surprised on several points. I did have a bit of a hard time getting into this as it moved pretty slowly in the first 30% or so, but I’m glad I stuck it out! Part of the slowness for me was the second timeline as it’s not revealed how it connects to the main timeline until far closer to the end. The reveal fit well with the plot and did actually make me pause and think through everything I already knew and fit a lot of pieces together. My only dislike, besides the slow beginning, was the somewhat rushed ending. It was almost nonstop action/chaos for the final 25% roughly and while it mostly fit the story’s build-up, it was a lot, and hindered the drama of the final reveal a bit.

This is great if you need something quick to read -- nothing overly complex, but it is well-written and kept me guessing until the end.
