Sammy, Pip and their teddies went back through time to learn about music. From a button in each page, we can hear a song (I presume) from the story unfold. From Germany, to Arab, India, Norway, Brazil. From famous persons we knew, to the music style founded in the said country. Should be an interesting book, mostly for children who loves sounds and music.
The only issue I had with reading an eARC of this book is that I was unable to listen to the music samples that the physical copy is sure to have; I might just get the physical copy for that reason – plus the book takes readers on an amazing musical journey through time and place!
Through the young fictional protagonists of Pip and Sammy, readers are introduced to music and musicians across the world as they literally time travel, starting from the nun Hildegard in Germany in the year 1155 to listening to Indian ragas in a Udaipur palace in 1767; from listening to ragtime by Scott Joplin in 1899 to joining in the celebrations at the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro in 1911.; and more!
The vibrant and detailed artwork is the perfect accompaniment to the narrative and shows us details of both the place and time. Look for Pip, Sammy, and their teddies on each page!
Disclaimer: I received a digital ARC of all the featured book from NetGalley, and these are my honest opinions of the book.
What a fabulous book for introducing children (and adults) to different musical styles and influences from around the world. The summaries and the accompanying illustrations are gorgeous and I was delighted to see some of my personal favourites included ( Peer Gynt and anything by Scott Joplin). A super idea to include the sound buttons to enable you to listen whilst you read. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy which will enable me to listen to the music too.
Once they found out how to switch it on, the children loved it. Hope it will teach them to listen to classical music.
(Thanks to Net Galley for this Amazing Book).
Oh I do love these musical books! I only wish I had the tracks on the digital version I read to hear the songs but I can imagine them! Kids will love pressing the buttons to hear songs from all around the world and from different time periods and cultures. Full colour illustrations are gorgeous on every page. Loved it.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publishers for letting me read this book in exchange for my review.
I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Used a copy where I wasn't able to access the sounds but a fun story nonetheless!
Such a great history and wide overview of various music styles! It's diverse and spans a wide time of history. I wish I had the physical version to press the button and actually hear the music that was presented! It has full page and beautiful illustrations as well!
Thanks to netgalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review!
A very unique picture book about styles of music throughout history and around the world. Beautiful pictures and synopses accompany each type of music along with a song. This would make a wonderful gift. Children will love pushing the button to hear each song.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC. All thoughts are my own.
'Listen to the Music' is a lovely interactive book for young children to expose them to some different music from around the world. The book has beautiful illustrations and text appropriate for primary school children that explains where in the world the music originates and some of the history behind it.. For some of my youngest students I would need to explain some details and for my older students, 9+, I would use this as a jumping off point for them to find out more as they would find the detail lacking.
The back page provides a good summary of each clip with additional details and the it seems the opportunity to hear the clip again without having to go back through the text. It also numbers them so you can listen in the same order should you choose to.
It is hard to comment on the quality of the sound clip, as I viewed a digital copy. For this reason I will currently rate this at a three. When I am able to review a physical copy, I will update my review.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for gifting me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to Netgalley and Quarto for the ARC of this!
There is so much that I loved about this : the art style, the diversity of composers and music types, and the overall readability. I was really disappointed to see the G**** slur included in this modern book for children, even though it was describing the plot of a famous play, I think they could have chosen to not use the full word or to swap it for a different one. We had to pop back and forth to look up songs as the ebook had them listed in the back, but I know that won’t be an issue for readers who have working buttons on the page.
I thought that this was a really great idea for a book.
I liked the mix of music that was chosen and that there were some lesser well-known as well as the famous composers in there too but it wasn’t pitched right for me as its not suitable for the age range with them being young readers.
It would be a great introduction to composers but I think it needs a few tweaks.
It is 3 stars from me for this one
A treat for the eyes!
A very well done compilation of celebrating different cultures around the world regarding music! The writing is so beautiful and well versed. The reading age group will enjoy it very much.
It’s the illustrations that made me go crazy! It’s perfect! So magical!
Thank you, Quarto Publishing Group- Wide Eyed Editions, for the advance reading copy.
I think this book is a very fun idea for exposing kids to music/music from around the world! I think music is a great tool for children and I know how important singing and story time is for young kids.
This book reminds me of the Vox books we have at the library and those are a huge hit with kids and parents so I think this is something that will do very well and I loved that it included music from different places around the world and different time periods.
My only complaint is that the language seemed to be geared towards older children, but the idea of the book and addition of being able to listen to the music felt like it was for a younger age range. This could be good in covering a wide range of kids, but it was something that stuck out to me.
Thank you to NetGalley for making this available in exchange for an honest review!
I love this book! I will definitely give it to my niece when she is older. Right off the bat, one can see that the art is beautiful and whimsical. I was pleased to see women like Hildegard von Bingen, Anna Maria Mozart, and Clara Schumann featured, and not just their male contemporaries.
As a music educator, I love the questions the book asks - they help children think about and talk about music. For example, they are asked to think about how the sound of the violin makes them feel, or if they can imagine being in a garden when they hear the Indian Raga.
I wish I could hear the musical parts of the book along with this ARC, but I got the idea and really loved this anyway. Thank you for the sharing this with me, Netgalley and Quarto Publishing!
