As someone who isn't quite old enough to recall the Clinton scandal fully, Nason's memoir was a fascinating read for me. The book did have some quirks that took me out of it—some errant commas and the absurdity of using pseudonyms for people who were obviously very well known—but it was otherwise a good read that felt like a more meaningful life story than simply gazing at a train wreck (even if the train wreck is your own life at the time!).
A part of the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal I didn't know about and you probably didn't either. Kate Nason memoir is raw and well written. Her words flow off the page in such a way that you understand how she feel for her (ex)husband's charms. He is a master manipulator.
Before, Charlie, Kate and her young daughter were living in Los Angeles. Charlie entered the picture. He was younger than her, handsome and charming. Kate was crazy about Charlie but her instincts kept her saying no each time he proposed. The 10th time she accepted his proposal. Over the course of the marriage, they moved, got new jobs and he cheated over and over again. Kate sticks by his side until she discovered that her husband's mistress was also the mistress of the President of the United States.
I am going back and forth wondering if I would like this book as much as I did if Mallory wasn't actually Monica Lewinsky. That part is fascinating.
It is interesting to hear exactly what went on in a cheating relationship, from the woman's point of view, and how important decisions are made.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this.
My first words after completing this memoir is: "Wow".
During these events, I was a child (basically around 10 years old), however, the media that I saw at that time, was mainly focused on Clinton, then the other side of the story.
This is the other side of the story, where another family is also affected by the scandal of Monica Lewinsky (which I learned about after some googling).
I really enjoyed reading this memoir, that at times I actually forget that I'm ready a memoir. During the events, we see Kate Nason grow to stand up for herself and protect her young children, and its very clear the events help shape the person she is today.
I requested this book because I enjoy memoirs. I jumped into this one without a lot of background information on the situation that inspired it. It's no spoiler that this book is about a woman whose husband cheats on her with multiple women, one of whom is particularly infamous. At 55% in, the author is still collecting evidence of the affairs, which are denied by her husband. Struggling to get through, I googled the story. It seems that eventually everything comes out, the press become involved, and the situation devolves. I learned from my googling that one of the affairs was with Monica Lewinsky prior to her involvement with President Clinton.
While there is some inherent interest in the story, especially for those with political leanings or interest in political scandal, I found it tedious. I feel compassion for the author. Her treatment is deplorable. It isn't however, unique. The elements of this story that I was waiting for-the political aspects, the media-were slow to arrive. I have to wonder if the story wasn't connected to the Lewinsky presidential scandal would it be sensational at all?
Perhaps there is more "meat" to the story, possibly even redemption. I'll never know. As a person with a backlog of reading material and limited time I made the choice to DNF this one and move on.
I'm giving this book 3 stars. It wasn't for me, but for the right person (and based on the reviews I've already seen posted) this book does resonate with the right audience.
II read a lot of memoirs, so I was excited by this book.
It took everything I had to push myself, to read to the end.
I just could not connect with Kate and the pacing was ssooooo slow.
If hindsight were 20/20, we'd all spare ourselves a lot of unhappiness, but unfortunately, that's not the case for most of us. Kate Nason's memoir, Everything is Perfect, is an example of one woman's look at her life and the realization that our gut instincts should always be trusted.
With a first marriage behind her, Nason isn't interested in getting married, so when "Charlie" comes into her life, she keeps it light, despite her growing affection. After 9 marriage proposals, she accepts the 10th, but with some internal misgivings on her part.
Everything is Perfect leads us on Nason's journey through a second marriage of betrayal and lies all the more painful when it's played out for the public when "Charlie's" former mistress happens to be having an affair with the President of the United States.
Nason lays bare the pain of her past. Everything is Perfect is a powerful read and testament to the fact that we are all stronger than we realize.
Thank you to #NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC of #EverythingisPerfect.
Everything is Perfect by Kate Nason is an honest and raw memoir. The author's husband is a predator so this was a very interesting perspective to read about. Especially about watching the American Crime story about my beloved Monica Lewisnky.

I am still blown away by this book. I’m most likely going to read it again one day. I’m also going to read anything else about this that I can. There are so many things that I didn’t know. I mean, to be fair, I was basically a kid when most of this went down. This book covers a scandalous affair. It also covers some of the heavier side effects of affairs. There are references to gaslighting and mental abuse as well. I went into the book blindly and I’m really not sure what I was getting into. Once I figured it out though, I was blown away. I definitely recommend this book.
The story of Kate's life, it was only as the book progressed that I realised who she was and why her story was important. Saying that, the start of the book is interesting and makes for interesting reading.
Written from her own point of view, the book is easy to read . She is honest about her emotions and the events which have shaped her life.

I have been on a nonfiction kick recently and this one stood out for many reasons. I loved the honesty and emotion. I felt like I was in the moment with the author and I felt like the articulation of the circumstances were easy to understand which I appreciated with such a complex issue.
very interesting story of Kate Nason's life. Her husband cheated on her , very easy interesting read.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the Kindle ARC in exchange for an honest review. Kate Nason's memoir, Everything is Perfect, is a sad but true story of betrayal in a marriage. Kate was married and divorced in her early 20s and swore that she would never marry again. She is a single mom of one young daughter, living in L.A. after a personal tragedy. She meets Charlie who asks her 10 times to marry him. She loves him and his company and he seems to feel the same way. She tells herself: twice married is ok, twice divorced is not ok. She resists as long as she can and eventually marries Charlie. Her misgivings haunt her as she suspects Charlie is having an affair or multiple affairs, which is turns out he was. Ms. Nason's writing is so strong on the subject of betrayal - and I'm writing as a person who knows. Not only does her husband cheat but it turns out one of the women he was cheating with also had an affair with the President of the United States later down the line. She describes what goes through her mind with suspicions and facts, all while her husband gaslights her.
It's heartbreaking to read but also very compelling and honest.
Kate Nason’s memoir was an interesting read. She bared her heart as she discussed how the men who she chose to spend her life with disregarded her feelings and nearly broke her. I grieved for Kate as she shared her trauma shortly before her first child was born, and again as she shared “Charlie’s” blatant disregard for their marriage vows. Once I realized who “Mallory” was, I felt even worse for Kate, being so publicly humiliated thought no fault of her own. It seems like Kate has wonderful family and friends who helped her though extremely difficult times.
I’m happy she found the peace and success she craved. Her “spiritual” guidance was sad to me, but I’m happy that she came to realize that she needs to listen to that little voice inside.

Kate didn't listen when her instincts told her not to marry her second husband. She didn't heed her gut feelings when she felt something was wrong in the marriage. She ignored the clues that said her husband was cheating. She forgave him and tried to work things out, continue in the marriage, and protect her children. She chose to do all of this until her choices were taken away by her husband who had been intimately involved with the mistress of a high powered politician. She found out hours before the story broke in the news and her husband and family became fodder for the current scandal plastered nightly on the news. She tried to stick with her husband through the upheaval until she found him on the couch with the babysitter in the middle of the night. She stayed until he made it impossible to stay anymore.
Facing her fears and packing her determination she set herself and her children free.
Everything is Perfect is a story of the lies we tell ourselves, the lies we believe, and the personal power we possess to survive and thrive through more than we thought possibe.
I finished this book in tears. The trauma, the pain, the anger, the depression, the confusion, the journey towards freedom and healing. The author’s mention of her PTSD getting reactivated: I appreciated that. It’s so honest and real. I can relate to her emotions so much, even though my trauma and pain is completely different.
As a non-US citizen this was not a story that even hit our headlines in South Africa, the intern and the president was all we were aware of. Which in turn made it easier for folk this side of the world to assign labels as to who was the victim and who was the predator. So it was rather interesting to read of another perspective which puts the carefully assigned labels into a bit of disarray.
What I especially enjoyed about this book is the honesty that Ms Nason uses to disclose personal, private issues with dignity - her breakdown of her first marriage and what caused it comes to mind immediately.
What was shocking to me was how quickly the school forgave Charlie after his press conference, major red flag to me especially given his inappropriate teacher/student relations. Not sure how things like this would be received in today's society, but I don't think he would have been welcomed back with a standing ovation.
A good read all in all.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to read this book.
.
Everything is not perfect in Kate Nason’s remarkable memoir. While many names have been changed to protect some bystanders and to not reveal the true nature of Ms. Nason’s husband’s (Charlie, a pseudonym) extramarital activities, the core story is completely true.
On her second marriage, Ms. Nason is either blind or in denial that her husband is a philandering fraud - hiding in plain sight his ongoing relationship with not only “Mallory” but other women as well. When she finally has had enough and the person “Mallory” is is revealed, it’s truly down the rabbit hole for Ms.Nason. Eventually she dumps her husband and moves on to repair her life.
The book, while clearly non-fiction, reads like a novel in voice, pacing, narrative, and point of view. Once I got into the story I could not put the book down.
Bravo to Ms. Nason for telling all in such a captivating way.
I received this book as an ARC from the publisher and NetGalley.
The authors writing style drew me right in to her shocking story. She shares her life her marriage and her husbands shocking betrayal. Her husbands affair with the young woman who later gained notoriety as the intern who had an affair with the President.Kate Nasons personality came through she is a strong resonance sharing her most intimate raw moments and somehow keeps her sense of humor, her awful ex never deserved her.#netgalley #everythingisperfect.
A useful and close look at family, marriage and betrayal. I was glad for the sharp humor in the book as well, and I appreciated the vivid look at the author's struggle.
