Same Time Next Summer is the perfect beach book to give you all the warm fuzzies. It is the story of Sam, an engaged woman who returns to her family beach house only to be reunited with her first love and confront all of the unhappy components of her life. This book warmed my heart. It was funny and sweet and full of female empowerment about doing what you love, following your heart and standing up for yourself. The cast of characters were all so endearing and lovable. I loved the banter, I loved the nostalgia of Sam’s childhood summers spent at the beach, I loved the family dynamics. A quintessential beach read as summer is coming quickly to an end. I did the audio and it was fantastic.

Thank you to Netgalley and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam, G.P. Putnam's Sons for the e-arc copy of this book. I am actually surprised how much I enjoyed this one. I had never read anything by Annabel Monaghan before, but I liked how easy her writing was to read. I found myself wanting to keep picking this one up and was engaged with the story. Although it was fairly predictable, I liked the two different timelines and two different perspectives of the main characters. It also had great therapy representation. I'll definitely be looking into other books Annabel Monaghan writes.

Beach Rules:
Do take long walks on the sand.
Do put an umbrella in every cocktail.
Do NOT run into your first love.

But it never quite works the way you plan. While the authors first book focused on love found later in life, this sophomore novel focuses on first love and the impact it can have on the rest of your life. This is a fun read you won't regret taking with you to the beach.

I read Same Time Next Summer as part of July group buddy read. I’m not usually a romance reader (with the exception of a dark romance now and then), so I wasn’t sure what to expect or if I’d like it. Although it took me a little while to get into it, it ended up being my favorite book of July.

What I like most about the book is the conversation on fear and what it costs us to live our lives from a place of fear. It’s something the main character, Sam, struggles with and that I believe a lot of us can relate to.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book. It’s heartfelt and sweet, and you’ll find yourself really rooting for the characters. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Monaghan.

I loved this book! Definitely one I didn’t want to put down! I couldn’t wait to see how it ended. The perfect quick read set on a beach! Two of my go to’s for summer reading!

This was adorable and hear breaking and all of the things that go along with first love. A second chance romance this story meets Sam as she plans her wedding to Jack and is visiting her family summer home. The problem is her first love Wyatt is back next door.

This story follows dual timelines, one in their teenage years and one in the present.

I think what I liked the most about this was the exploration of who we are with a partner and how the best parts of us sometimes get inadvertently left behind in childhood.

4 stars- definitely a fan of Annabel Monaghan!

Same Time Next Summer is one of the most enjoyable novels I’ve read lately. I was immersed in the story from the get go. The narrative made me feel what it was like to be a summer kid on Long Island, experiencing repeated carefree summers away from real life while growing up. The author developed the tale of first love in what felt like a realistic way. Both Sam’s and Wyatt’s POVs were so well done—thoughtful and relatable. Sam’s relationship with her current fiancé was complex— understanding dawns for the reader as the past is revealed. And Sam and Wyatt coming to terms as adults with the hard things that separated them all those years ago was so satisfying. Great job, Ms. Monaghan!

I had high hopes for "Same Time Next Summer" because of how much I enjoyed Monaghan's previous novel, "Nora Goes Off Script." Thankfully, my expectations were not only met, they were exceeded. I thought Sam was a wonderful main character to whom I could not only relate, but empathize with and root for. Her fiance, Jack, was not a villain, which I enjoyed, and it was obvious why they were in a relationship and why they shouldn't be in one. I found the reveal of why Wyatt and Sam broke up to be one of the best parts of the novel because I think it did a great job explaining Sam's character arc and was a genuine reason for their relationship to fall apart. Suffice to say, I cannot wait for Monaghan's next novel.

It’s an immersive and heartfelt journey. Dual timelines and dual POVs had me feeling all the feels, some that I didn’t even expect. Hopeful but ill-fated, watching first love bloom all the while knowing it was doomed, but desperate to know why. The story jumps back and forth, doling out relationship tidbits and morsels of love and despair. Reclaiming life, family, and fate. And then bringing it back to an emotional and hopeful love story, all set in a summertime escape, perfectly described.

My only criticism is that I thought it was a little too short. I wanted just that little bit more. But overall, I love Annabel Monaghan’s writing and will binge it every time.

I received this book in exchange for an honest view from Netgalley. I enjoyed Monaghan’s first novel and was excited to find that I enjoyed this one just as much. I found it had some similarities to Every Summer After and would recommend it to fans of Carly Fortune, but it stands well on its own for those who aren’t familiar with that reference. I enjoyed the world the author created and the characters. Great summer read.

Summer days and summer nights build a store of memories to last until next summer. Sam loved her time at the beach, and she loved Wyatt until he broke her heart. Fourteen years later she comes back to the beach, her doctor fiancee in tow, to plan their wedding. The memory of who she was at the beach threatens to undermine her carefully curated existence. Good summertime read, I barely put the book down for the last 150 pages. And then I was sorry it was over.

I loved Monaghan's first novel but I just couldn't get interested in this book. I tried for several months and it just didn't happen. Thanks NetGalley for the advance copy. #NetGalley #SameTimeNextSummer #didntfinish

Another hit from Annabel Monaghan! After reading Nora Goes Off Script, I was committed to reading anything else this author put out into the world, and Same Time Next Summer definitely held up to my high standards! It's so easy to get sucked into the storyline and find yourself relating to the characters and rooting for their happy endings. The way the settings were described made me feel like I was right there in the book with them! Thank you NetGalley, for the ARC!

I adored Nora Goes off Script and Annabel Monaghan became a must read author for me. Same Time Next Summer was a sweet second chance love story with excellent character development, a fun dual timeline, and a heavy dose of nostalgia. Loved it!

I really enjoyed Nora Off Script last year so I knew I needed to read Same Time Next Summer. While I think it was decent, Nora was definitely better overall.

A perfect read for the beach if you enjoy second chance romances and don’t mind a few eye rolling moments.

I didn’t vibe with this writing style at all. It’s a dual timeline (which I’m already not a fan of) but the “now” chapters were in first person and the “then” chapters were in third person? but also rotated perspectives? It just felt very fragmented and awkward and didn’t flow at all. Aside from that, the rest of plot was pretty good but I wasn’t really rooting for the second chance romance. The breakup was so awful when they were teenagers I just don’t think he really deserved a second chance hahaha obviously, it had been many years and people change, but I just wasn’t a fan of him.

I very much Annabel Monaghan's first novel. I was less enamored by this sophomore novel. As a heroine, Sam read as immature and clueless. I was unsold on her still being so hung up on her high school summer love. Given her hang up, I found it implausible that she was unaware that he was a famous songwriter and that a song called Sam I Am about a youthful summer love was about her. It was eye-rollingly convenient.

"Same Time Next Summer by Annabelle Monaghan is an absolute gem. The captivating storytelling, alternating timelines, and strong character development had me hooked from the very beginning. It's a must-read for anyone who loves a heartfelt and nostalgic love story."
This is an easy read and an amazing beach/summer book that will capture you from beginning to end.

I discovered Annabel Monaghan on NetGalley last year with her adult debut, Nora Goes Off Script. When I saw this title come up this summer, I jumped at the chance to read an early ARC. Then life showed up and my reading life was decimated. When I came up for air, this was the first title I jumped into and it was the greatest gift. It is everything I look for in a novel: a great story, characters I’m rooting for, phenomenal writing, and that special something that makes me never want to stop reading. This book had all of that in spades, and more. This book truly made me feel on a visceral level. On a side note, I can’t imagine for a moment the pressure of the second novel after a debut like NGOS, but Ms. Monaghan exceeded any and all expectations. Highly recommend.
