Thought this was really unique for a romance series in the way it was set up. I enjoyed getting POVs from main characters other than the primary couple, I really look forward to continuing the series and seeing what happens with the boys and their overarching storylines.
Welcome to Sandover Prep, where the delinquents roam...and you can't trust a soul. This new adult series set against the backdrop of an elite prep school where the only thing more dangerous than the powerful seniors who rule without consequences are the secrets they're keeping. RJ and Finn meet when their parents get married where they get shipped off to Sandover Prep for their senior year. RJ automatically doesn't fit in, and has no plans of setting down roots and making friends until he meets Sloane, the headmasters daughter who swears she's swearing off guys. But when her ex boyfirend and "king" of the school challenges him, his new friends Lawsom, SIlas and Fenn will have to have his back to get him ready to take him on. If RJ wants to survive prep school and win Sloane's heart, he'll need to figure out a way to use all the secrets hidden in the walls of Sandover.
I am an Elle Kennedy Stan and was so excited for this book. Unfortunately it wasn't my favorite of her series. This felt a little too Riverdale-esq for me. It's a little too dramatic and unrealistic and that got in the way for me to enjoy this book more. Not to mention all the characters, especially the men, were super toxic. I mean the headmaster threatens expulsion if anyone dates his daughters, but allows an underground fight ring on campus? I think this is something I would have liked more if I was closer in age to the characters. What I really enjoyed, and wished there was more focus on, was the mystery of the headmaster's daughter Casey and her accident. That really kept me going because I wanted to see who did it. It kept me from DNF-ing this book. But with an ending like this book, I will definitely be picking up the sequel to see how the cliffhanger wraps up. I need answers!
Thanks to the publisher for the ARC in return for an honest review.
3 Stars I’m a big fan of Elle Kennedy, especially her Off Campus and Briar U series, but Misfit was a bit of a disappointment for me. It should definitely be considered more New Adult Fiction rather than Romance because there wasn’t much of the latter, at least compared to her other books. I will say that this feels like the start of the next Gossip Girl kind of series and I could see it being adapted into a teen TV series just like Gossip Girl was. There is plenty of angst and misbehaving wealthy teens at the New England prep school, Sandover, where Misfit is set. Not a bad book, but not what I was expecting either.
Okay so I didn't love it but I didn't hate it?
I enjoyed the concept of the story - delinquent boarding school, headmaster's off limit daughter, and a little mystery, I just didn't like how it all played out,
I don't mind books with multiple POV but for this book I felt like it was too much and also some were not necessary. I think that if it was just Sloane, Fenn, and RJ it would have been better.
Silas is annoying af, he's obviously in love with Sloane and that's why he's such a crappy boyfriend to his girl at his old school. His point of view is just not needed, he could be focused on later on in the story if he needs a main role. I do have some suspicions about him because of how he doesn't seem to tell his whole story about why he got kicked out of his old school and think it might connect to the bigger story, so we will see if I change my mind about him.
I also could have done without Lawsons POV. He's obviously in a dark place, has family issues, drinking and drug problem but apparently it doesn't affect him at all, he can still compete in sports and have sex with anything that moves including both his teachers (yes he is your resident bi character that needs mental health but won't get it). If we are going to dive into Lawson I want that separate because it's A LOT.
Again, I wish I didn't have their point of view and focused more on the other story, I obviously wanted more of Fenn and RJ's growing relationship, and Casey's story with her car crash mystery so I guess I will just have to read the second book and hope I don't hate the way it's written because I obviously have to know what happened because of the epilogue and RJ finally getting the evidence!
SIDE NOTE:
Duke - he's the worst, obviously the top dog bully and of course Sloane's (MFC) ex boyfriend/F-buddy. He was such a minimal character and there was all this build up with him and RJ and then it faded? Like they fought and I feel like RJ could have screwed him over first instead of fighting but whatever, that's not by biggest issue, I just hated his character and I have a feeling I will be seeing him more in the 2nd book because he is super sus to me as well.
I am SUCH an Elle Kennedy fan and honestly will read anything she writes! This was fun! I typically expect a fun steamy read from her and this was no different. I got some Gossip Girl vibes and I adored that. I loved jumping into these characters and can't wait to keep reading the series!
This book had so much potential but I could not connect with it at all. You follow 3 POVs with a large amount of characters I couldn't keep straight. On top of that, they all seemed too surface without much depth.
Misfit is an Elle Kennedy New Adult read. It's told from multiple POVs and while normally that enthralls me, this one had a tad much going on in terms of story lines. Even so, I found the book interesting and devoured it in one sitting.
I'm excited to continue to the story in Rogue, the next installment, and find out what happens to the characters!
I love Elle Kennedy’s writing. I always have. I keep trying different romance tropes and authors to reinvigorate my love of the romance genre and this just wasn’t one to do that.
This book is in no way bad! It was quite enjoyable actually, but just basic.
Misfit is book 1 in the Prep series by Elle Kennedy and it was way more than I was expecting and I loved it!
I love this brilliant author's work. She continues to blow me away after every book.
Her Avalon Bay series is the absolute best and I've had the honor reading them.
But her Prep series is phenomenal! Actually it's so addicting! And I need more.
The drama with these characters, I was hooked after one chapter. I literally couldn't stop myself I I tried.
I've seen some compare this to Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars which I freaking loved and I couldn't agree more. So if you're into that this is thebook for you.
I loved the banter, romance, steam and all the rich kids that came along with it.
This is told in multiple POVs which I thought was great.
The whole Prep School vibe, drama, mystery and forbidden romance was top notch.
It's truly the best book I've read so far this year. And I'm dying to start book two.
Don't wait dive into this new adult romance! You won't be sorry!
It's addicting and so enjoyable I had the best time with these people!
"I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
Thank you to NetGalley and Bloom Books for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
At first, I had a hard time getting into this book because there are multiple POVs and I was a little confused at that.
The story is well written though and once the plot started going a bit more I didn't want to put the book down.
I think it would have been much better if only it had been mainly focused on the main couple instead of introducing us to all those characters in one book.
I am giving this 3.5 stars
Misfit is Elle Kennedy's newest addicting read. It's been a long time since I read a book that hooked me so thoroughly within the first few pages. But not only did this book hook me, it kept me glued to the pages until the very end.
In this story we follow RJ whose mother recently married Fenn's father. RJ has been to his fair share of public schools, but now he's in this new all boys boarding school for, well, misfits. Misfits, delinquents, all of them have one thing in common. They're rich. All but RJ.
RJ meets Sloane and he's enthralled by her. The thing is... she's off limits. She's the headmaster's daughter. This book has a lot of drama, and a lot of POV's/characters to follow. Not only do we get RJ, Sloane, and Fenn's perspective, we get their other two friends- Silas and Lawson.
LOVED this one and can't wait for Rogue and also more from this author.
Misfit is a mature prep school romance following multiple perspectives with a little bit of mystery. I picked up Misfit without reading the synopsis because it’s Elle Kennedy and I’m glad I went in without any preconceived notions.
Misfit is told from multiple perspectives. At the beginning of the novel I thought there were too many perspectives, however after I quickly learned all the characters and appreciated all the storylines Kennedy set up. The main characters of the novel, RJ and Sloane, have a forbidden romance with Sloane playing hard to get. Their banter was sexy and fun as they traded barbs while fighting their attraction. Their angst is truly palpable.
Like I mentioned previously, I didn’t think I would like the other perspectives, Fenn, Silas, and Lawson, however I found myself quickly invested in Fenn’s daddy issues, Silas’ unrequited love, and Lawson’s truly raunchy behavior.
Under all the rich kids drama and debauchery, there’s the beginning of a little mystery with Sloane’s little sister. While this plotline takes a backseat for most of the novel, it slowly develops behind the scenes until an explosive reveal at the end of the novel. I wouldn’t call the reveal a cliffhanger, but I will say I’m very excited to get my hands on the sequel.
Overall, Misfit is a drama and angst filled romance in a prep school setting. The multiple perspectives may seem like the story has no direction, but Kennedy weaves an entertaining story rife with drama, romance, and violence.
Misfit is perfect for fans of Gossip Girl. I enjoyed the story of Sloane, RJ, Fenn, and Casey and will be reading more in this series because of that cliffhanger ending.
I Loved the multiple characters and how the author included all of their view points through out the book. Elle Kennedy can never go wrong. The characters where so easy to fall in love with.
A mindless, addictive read that reminded me of the New England prep school version of Gossip Girl! The perfect read if you’re in a slump !
Read if you like:
-Academic setting
-Multiple POVs
-Steamy scenes
-Elle’s off camp series
Misfit follows RJ who is being sent to Sandover Prep for his senior year. RJ has a feeling that he won't be at Sandover Prep for very long so he doesn't really care. But then he sees Sloane and she is the most beautiful girl he has ever seen. There is a problem: she is the headmaster's daughter and he has to stay away from her. But RJ is determined to win her over. Sloane's father isn't the only one trying to stop RJ from Sloane, so is her ex-boyfriend Duke. If RJ wants to win Sloane over he might just have to learn to adapt.
Elle Kennedy is one of my favorite authors so of course I read this. This book was so cute like most of Elle Kennedy's books are. But it also had the perfect amount of spice. Overall, I really enjoyed this one and so happy it is going to be a series. Because I need more. I also really liked how this book dealt with some serious issues. This book had some Gossip Girl vibes and I was so here for it. I mean at this point anything that Ell Kennedy writes is a must read for me.
