4 stars!

"Her Father's Daughter" by T. M. Dunn surprised me in more ways than one. This is a dramatic, disturbing, savvy, pretty twisted book that kept me guessing about the direction of the story. I enjoyed the dual points of view and found the story to be mostly fast-paced, though I will admit that there were aspects of both Linda and Anthony's POVs that dragged the story down here and there. I found myself drawn into what was going on from the first few chapters and had to keep reading to find out the ending. It sure sucked me in! Some aspects of the plot could have been kept a secret for a little longer in the narrative, but I digress. The descriptions are gross, the mystery is tense, and the tea is piping. Fans of familial dramas, thrillers, and mysteries will probably be satisfied by the contents of this book. Try to go in knowing as little as possible for maximum payoff.

Thank you to NetGalley, Crooked Lane Books, and T. M. Dunn for the complimentary ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.

Her Father's Daughter is disturbing. It's well written with two parallel stories, one hopeful and one very dark. I admit that I'll be a bit more leery of service people after reading it.

Father-daughter exterminators, Anthony and Linda, face a horrifying discovery that implicates Anthony. His journals reveal a dark past, adding to the gripping thriller. T.M. Dunn’s debut is a must-read with shocking twists and a jaw-dropping conclusion. Prepare for a unique and creepy ride!

In this domestic thriller that crosses over into horror at times, T. M. Dunn examines the question -- is it nature or nurture? What traits are inherited -- and can we ever get away from them?

Anthony and his daughter Linda run Donovan and Daughter Exterminators. When she makes a gruesome discovery during a job, it turns out her father is under suspicion but he's nowhere to be found.

Turns out her father has left some journals for her, explaining his life and as Linda reads them, she discovers just how far her father would go for his acting craft. It's at times horrific and definitely disturbing. The dual POV between Anthony and Linda does help to break up the descriptions of the gruesome crimes, which I appreciated. Will Linda follow in his footsteps?

As a thriller, this worked for me. Although I wasn't surprised by too much, I did like the quick read format of this and wanted to know how it was going to end. Anthony's POV was appropriately creepy and I liked Linda's POV much more.

Overall, a good story, well presented through the two points of view.

This book was a little more twisted than I thought it would be. The father and Daughter own an exterminator company and look after many buildings. The daughter goes to check on one of the buildings on the same day that her father was going to visit her mother's grave. While this isn't the twisted part, everything that rends to unravel itself after it is.

There are more lies and twists in this book, the more you read the more that all comes unraveled. So you don't want to put it down for this reason, as you end up with this urge to get to the end and find out what happens. But I do think that the writing style, constantly writing/reading about himself in third (?) person was the most annoying part.

Nearing the end I was so shocked that what I had read about the dad doing, I thought for sure he had changed his ways all because he had a daughter... But I couldn't be more wrong. The way that ending played out was so fitting for the storyline also!

Would I recommend this to fellow readers? Yes I would, to anyone who enjoys a twisted thriller. This wouldn't be the type of story I find myself reading more than once however.

Teaser:

wenty-five-year-old Linda Donovan has spent her life working for her father, Anthony, at Donovan and Daughter Exterminators in New York City. On the anniversary of her mother’s death, her father makes his annual visit to his late wife’s grave while Linda heads to a Park Avenue apartment building to work solo.

When she arrives, she finds the body of an elderly resident, partially eaten by rats. The gruesome death not only speaks poorly of the Donovans’ exterminating services, it also points to foul play. When the cops show up, they demand to speak to Linda’s father. But despite her efforts to contact him, Anthony has gone off the radar.

As he evades a possible murder charge, Linda’s father records in five notebooks—and five damning acts—the story of how he met and fell in love with her mother, a previously untold history of familial abuse, tormented souls, and true love gone terribly wrong. Skillfully weaving together domestic suspense, a desperate police investigation, a love affair, and a serial killer on the loose, acclaimed author T. M. Dunn’s Her Father’s Daughter is perfect for fans of Oyinkan Braithwaite and Karen Dionne.

This was one creepy, unique, twisty thriller. I loved this author’s writing style. It takes a bit to get into her style, but once you’re in that groove, it’s so nice to experience the uniqueness of it! It’s about a woman that is raised by a serial killer and how she eventually finds out. Definitely recommend!!

This is an interesting take on the serial killer trope, and is told in two POV’s, Anthony and his daughter Linda’s. I enjoyed both but liked Anthony’s a little more. The father/daughter duo are exterminators, and on the anniversary of her mother’s death she takes a solo job while Anthony goes to visit his wife’s grave. Her solo job turns into a disaster as it appears a deceased elderly woman’s face has been partially eaten by rats… (I um, thought this was definitely a different way to go…) It appears to be intentional not an accident, and the cops want to speak to Anthony but lo and behold, he has disappeared. Linda is confused, and soon realizes she may not know as much about her past as she thought. She then sets out to find her dad, learning more than she bargained for in the process. I really enjoyed this one, it was different, the ending wasn’t what I expected and I thought it all wrapped up well.

Two perspectives across two time lines make for a cleverly written plot. The interplay between characters is very well drawn and I found the writing style very descriptive, painting a vivid picture of the locations and actions - including a pretty nasty scene involving rats.

This book is such a unique and refreshing look at the serial killer trope. There’s also a dysfunctional family and some NYC rats which gave this book some surprising twists! I listened to this one in a day because it’s completely bingeable and the narrators, Cara Swingline and David Bendena, are truly captivating.

Told in dual points of view and dual timelines, HER FATHER’S DAUGHTER shines a light on how a psychopath can truly see how their actions are necessary and conscripted. Linda and Anthony are two completely different people. Anthony, Linda’s father, has been running the “family business” ever since his father passed away and now it’s time to teach Linda the ropes. His POV is told through notebooks he’s written for her describing his life, his infatuation with her mother, and how everything changed once she entered the picture. Linda’s POV is present day and follows her through her search for Anthony after his recent and sudden disappearance. She thinks their family business is the pest control service they run together but once she finds the notebooks, her entire world changes.

I thoroughly enjoyed this fast-paced twisted tale. The ending was a tad rushed but it was solid all the same. I hope you pick up a copy to enjoy as much as I did!

This was such a unique thriller! It was dark, disturbing, and suspenseful! This one was told from two different points of view. One being Linda's in present time, and the other was her father's in a form of journal entries that reveal his past leading up to present time in the story.
Linda grew up with just her father and once she was as old enough, she began helping him run the family business. Once she finds his journal, she learns that she knows absolutely nothing about her father, the man who raised and loved her. I felt so bad for Linda as the journal revealed her father's past and who he truly was.
This was a great, fast paced thriller.

The story follows the life of an exterminator and his daughter. She goes out to a job alone only to find a dead women being eat by rats! What happened to this women and why do the police believe her father was involved. The story is told through alternating POV's and was a page turner from the start! A great suspense thriller you do not want to miss full of twists and turns.

Thank you Netgalley, they author and the publisher for my ARC!

Thank you NetGalley, Crooked Lane Books, and T.M. Dunn for the advanced copy of Her Father's Daughter in exchange for my honest review!

I did not expect to be so thoroughly sucked in by this one! It was super fast-paced and there was a somewhat subtle sense of dread that just stuck with me throughout the entire book.

I was never quite sure who I was "rooting for," so to speak, until the very last part of the book. I found the ending to be pretty compelling as well.

I will definitely be adding Dunn to my "must read authors" list!

Loved this dark and disturbing domestic suspense!
The pacing was excellent and I was especially drawn to Anthony Donovan’s chapters, which were journal entries for his daughter, Linda, explaining his life. He had one crazy life!!
So many twists and turns in this book. Had me guessing what the heck was going to happen next! Really enjoyed Linda’s POV and her interesting love affairs.

This was a strange read...there were elements which I really enjoyed; the style of writing and element of suspense to name a couple. However, there were also elements which I did not enjoy; the flipping between narrators didn't work for me, along with what felt like a lot of drawn out irrelevant details which I didn't feel bought much to the storyline. I have read other books from T.M Dunn previously and really enjoyed them, but unfortunately, this one was not for me.

Her Father's Daughter by T. M. Dunn is a recommended domestic horror story following a serial killer.

Anthony is devoted to his daughter, Linda. Now twenty-five, Linda is working for her father Donovan and Daughter Exterminators in New York City. While her father visits her mother's grave, Linda continues on to an apartment building do her job. In an apartment she finds the body of an elderly woman who was clearly murdered and sees that rats have been at the body. This looks bad for their exterminating services.

Alternating chapters are personal written accounts by Anthony, detailing horrific abuse from his father and his subsequent life as an actor/serial killer.

In this case presenting the narrative through the alternating voices of Linda and Anthony didn't totally work for me. Readers will know right from the start that Anthony is a killer with major issues, which reduces the amount of suspense and tension. Anthony's written accounts of his actions are oddly paced and worded, which can be just as off-putting as his actions. They do provide a deep look into his insanity. Linda's narrative is more interesting, but uneven. This was more horror than thriller or mystery.

Wow! What a great psychological suspense Her Father’s Daughter by T.M. Dunn is. Very crazy, twisty and creative. I was surprised by much of what happened and couldn’t stop reading. The dual POV’s and dual timelines worked perfectly here and enhanced the story. I can’t wait to see what Dunn writes next. Thank you @thrillerbookloverpromtions and @crookedlanebooks for my copy!

Wow, powerful read for me. I love a good thriller and can see this as a movie for the thriller lovers.

NYC as we know can be rat infested in some parts. Donovan and Daughter Exterminators are the go-to for infestations of that sort and Linda and her father Anthony Donovan work this business. When Linda comes across a dead body well things start to change. Anthony has a few secrets and WOW what secrets they are....

This is/was a fast read for me and even though it has some creepy parts it was still fun to read.
