Intriguing and romantic, a great combination. The title captured me on this one, sounded like a fun adventure and Pineiro delivered!
This isi thebreakout book of the year for me. I didn't know what to expect at all. This story had all the items that make a story awesome for me. It was suspense, action, romance, friends to lovers, and lots of emotion.
When trouble comes up in the Miami police department, Roni and Trey will work together to figure it out.
You will be on the edge of your seat throughout this book. It is really a page turner.
Roni is a detective looking into the case of Detective Trey and his partner who might be a dirty cop. Roni is there to find the truth and prove their innocence and find the people ahead of a trafficking ring.
I really enjoyed this book, didn't have as much action as I thought there would be but there was plenty enough to keep me hooked till the very end. I enjoyed seeing how they worked together to solve the case but then again there was something else Roni was working on that Trey didn't konw about which was looking more into him and his partner to make sure they weren't dirty cops. Then there was a bit of attraction between the two but I liked that it didn't overwhelm the book I mean they are working on a case with lots of things to do and there really wasn't much time for that kinda stuff. Overall great book I really enjoyed it.
Good book that starts with a rush and keeps up the intensity to the very end. As the book opened, we had three Miami cops undercover at a Miami club. Trey and his partner Doug were there watching for drug activity and trying to contact their confidential informants. Roni is there investigating the disappearance of two young college women. Things begin to go sideways when Roni witnesses Doug talking to her suspect, and he is later killed under suspicious circumstances.
Trey received a tip from his CI about women being trafficked, so he and Doug went to check it out. Trey felt something strange was happening, and Doug's actions added to that feeling. In the ensuing shootout, Doug was killed, and Trey was injured. While in the hospital, Trey discovers that Internal Affairs is investigating Doug.
Roni, who is best friends with Trey's sister and has been friends with the family for years, is asked to help IA with their investigation. The thought makes her uncomfortable, but she agrees, mainly to ensure they don't suspect Trey. Telling him is not an option, but keeping it secret eats at her because she had a crush on him as a teen, and those feelings have grown in the years since then.
I liked watching the development of the relationship between Trey and Roni. Trey had always looked at her as his little sister's friend, but that had changed since the shooting. He's a little freaked out by his sudden attraction to her and does his best to keep it under wraps. When Trey asks Roni to help investigate Doug's death, she's happy to help. This throws them together, and it isn't long before the sparks between them grow stronger. I liked how Trey was protective of Roni while still respecting her abilities as a cop. But their budding relationship hits a bump in the road when Trey learns of Roni's work with IA, and he wonders if he can trust her. I ached for them both as they faced this issue. I liked seeing them overcome this obstacle and realize the importance of their feelings. I loved the role reversal at the end.
The suspense of the story kept me hooked from start to finish. I could feel Trey's anguish at Doug's death and his rock-solid belief that Doug was innocent of any wrongdoing. As he and Roni began investigating, they quickly realized they didn't know who they could trust. The deeper they dug, the more complex the case became. Dead witnesses, a growing number of suspects, and attacks meant to stop their investigation kept me glued to the pages as the book progressed. An unexpected twist sent the investigation in a slightly different direction, and a nail-biting confrontation brought it to a fantastic conclusion.
Lost in Little Havana, the first book in Caridad Pineiro’s new South Beach Security series, is the story of Detective Roni Lopez and her reunion with lifelong friend Detective Trey Gonzalez as they seek to find who killed his police partner and who the dirty cop is that caused this to happen.
With an inside look into South Beach culture and the Cuban American society of South Florida, this mystery takes it’s readers on a police procedural ride. Add in an underworld force trafficking young women and the urgency felt to save them, and you have an intriguing new story. Add in the unrequited attraction between Roni and Trey and you have an explosive story on so many levels!
This is a well written, expertly plotted story which followers of this genre should surely enjoy. I know I did and I do recommend this book!
This story follows Detective Roni Lopez who’s had a crush on Detective Trey Gonzalez since she was little, but he’s her best friends brother, a secret she’s been keeping from him for years. So when his partner is gunned down in a Miami nightclub and is asked to work with Internal Affairs to find out what happened, another secret she had to keep from him. But when both their lives are on the line will she finally tell him the truth?
This one had me guessing up until the end, just when I thought I knew who the killer was another player was put in to bat. I’ve always enjoyed the best friends brother troupe so I’m always here for those types of reads. Harlequin has really diversified their genres and I love all of the intrigue and romantic suspense books they have been releasing lately. I want to thank them for sending me this ARC via NetGalley for my review. This is a start of a new series called South Beach Security and there are two books that follow they are stand alone books. Releases November 29th!
