The Phantom Glare of Day is composed of three novellas, each following a young English woman struggling with adverse circumstances during World War One.
Sophie encounters a young man victimized by schoolyard bullies, Cäcilia faces decisions about abortion and euthanasia, and Manon confronts homophobia and antisemitism. I could not connect with any of the characters; they seemed aimless and prone to making bad decisions, so this book was not for me. The cover seems to have nothing to do with the stories inside. A picture of a rainy, nighttime London street would have been a better fit.
The Phantom Glare of Day is, however, thought provoking and well-written with flowing prose. It will appeal to those interested in introspective First World War fiction.

I was not able to finish this book because I did not agree with the author's writing style and choice of language. I was kind of disappointed because I thought it was a cool concept but it just was not for me.

Thank you net galley for providing me with a free copy of Phantom Glare day in exchange for a honest review.

Despite enjoying the writing, as the descriptions are lively and the prose beautiful, as well as the deep throught provoking themes, I struggled quite a bit with remaining interested in the characters.

Through the novel they seemed to make awful decisions quite often, and there was a lack of self development

Overall this was quite an enjoyable read perfect for people who care a lot about the writing of a book and less about it's characters.

This group of stories were often compelling and at times disturbing, but I couldn't put it down.

Thank you for my review copy!
