Absolutely loved this book and i really didnt expect to develop such an amazing bond with some of the characters i.e. Jenny and Amy and what an amazing role they played in discovering the truth behind the so called beauty clinic and Dr Cavendish well what can i say without spoiling the book a truly bitter and evil woman to the very core of her being. This book really was fadt paced and from half way through i really didnt want to put it down. I really enjoyed Sally Annes writing style and i hope to see this story continued into the outside world as i feel there is massive scope to do so.
Now this was a really great book, enjoyed it so much, could not put it down at all and it kept me guessing …
The Clinic will make you into the woman that you want to be. Led by a no-nonsense doctor and a few support staff, women with self-esteem/body image issues come to The Clinic to lose those last few pounds that are holding them back. But the methods are unorthodox and The Clinic is actually a former inpatient psychiatric facility. Nothing is as it seems.
Narrated by a current patient of The Clinic and a former patient of the psychiatric facility, we find out what the earlier occupants have in common with the most recent occupants. The story is a little slow with a lot of background, but once it picks up, it as enough twists and turns to keep you interested.
Thanks to the publisher in NetGalley for a copy. All opinions are my own.
Trigger Warning for Diet Related Topics, Fat-Phobia, and Diet Culture
Set in a old closed down psychiatric aslyum, the Clinic, is a new renovated beauty clinic that gives women programs involving exercise, beauty treatments and more. Six women out of over a dozen are chose to attend this clinic and when they arrive they are greeted by Dr Cavendish, her two assistants: Kim and Tina, and a physical fitness coach: Robert. For the first weeks the women start to settle in but as they do they start to notice some oddities such as the contract they had to sign. They start to wonder about why their suitcases were searched for contraband and why there is such a restrictive diet along with the vitamin injections, nightly pills but even though they question this they all seem to be losing weight and leeping well.
The clinic is isolcated from the nearest town and other than the four staff and secruity, the six women are isolated and they dont have their phones since they were taken. While this is occurring a previous patient is being paid by a gutsy housing developer who wants the Clinic land to sneak into the property and do whatever she can do to shut down the place and luckily she knows the ins and outs of the building. As this patient tries to do what she can to help this housing developer she realizes something is very very wrong and it needs to be dealt with.
This novel was mostly told through one of the current patients named Amy but we do get some perspective from the doctor and others. Amy has to go through some crazy things while in the clinic and discovers the rules are extremely strict and when broken come with bad consequences. At one point Amy is given laxatives when chocolate is found in her room and that was rough for me to read.
Personally I did not enjoy this book because it really showed the toxic culture of dieting and weightloss clinics. For someone who struggles with weight and health issues this made me very angry. It is a gripping tale though of how much pressure the world puts on women and the need to look perfect. it was well written and the style of writing was strong. It was really easy to follow along. I would not recommend though because of the triggers it has.
The Beautiful You Clinic is an exclusive treatment program that promises extreme results after its four-week period for desperate women willing to pay a fortune to lose weight and change their outward appearance, should they be lucky enough to be one of the chosen few to enter the clinic’s doors. Every day, the women are fed mere morels of food, but given plenty of pills and injections under the supervision of the mysterious and demanding Dr. Cavendish. When Amy arrives for her treatment course along with five other women, she is already spooked to find out the clinic is housed at the site of an old asylum, but as the weeks go on, she swear there’s something sinister happening behind the polished veneer of the clinic’s doors. Especially once her fellow patients begin dropping out of the program mysteriously.
This book is told from several points of view, including Amy’s, Dr. Cavedish, and a woman named Jenny, a former patient at Pine End Asylum, who we get to know throughout the book.
I really flew this book, it was so intriguing and I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next. I would classify it as a slow-burn thriller, as things really built up toward the epic conclusion (and I would definitely call that conclusion epic!). But the entire time, the spooky atmosphere was incredibly foreboding and you could feel the tension in the air. It was like ou were just waiting for something big to happen and then *BAM*, it came!
The conclusion was really amazing, and I have to say, while I didn’t see it coming at all, looking back, there were clues along the way, so someone could figure it out if they paid close attention to all the breadcrumbs the author leaves along the way. But hey, hindsight is 20/20 after all. I loved how everything came together in the end and my jaw was just on the floor with each new revelation. I loved it.
The author was great at crafting a complex, intense story that really unfolded at a good pace, not too fast, not too slow. I would definitely read more from this author after finishing this book. It was an excellent thriller!
Highly recommended!
I'm going to find this hard to review. It took me a good few weeks to finish this book which is usually a sign that I'm really not enjoying it. But I don't know why I didn't enjoy it. It had a great plot and all the creepy ingredients that I love but I just didn't find myself desperate to grab my kindle each night.
One of the biggest issues for me was time line, as one of the main characters, Jenny must've been around 40yrs old but she didn't read as a 40yr old, I couldn't help but picture her in her early 20's but then that didn't fit the plot.
I will say that the final 20% or so was gripping but just a little too later. I could imagine this working quite well as a film or mini series though, more of a visual thing maybe?
Thank you for the opportunity #NetGalley #TheClinic
Amazing book really enjoyed this one ....is told from few different people but so easy to keep up with I will be looking for more books by this author ....loved it 10/10
Absolutely brilliant, well written, interesting, brilliant pace and a mystery you will need to get to the end of quickly.
A really rare joy to read.
Oh wow even starting this book I was intrigued from the very start. I enjoyed the full book and I was always going back to it to read. From start to finish a fantastic thriller.
I love a good mystery. I more so love a good mystery with a shock factor. And this book delivers.
There is a slow build to this story. We are introduced to a group of women, unhappy with their appearance. They all have stories behind them, their drive to weight loss - and so many of the stories are relatable. As a reader I felt an instant connection and I was invested.
I loved to see how the author brought the history of Pine End into Beautiful You. Some chapters were confusing at first - but then they all add together and the pieces all fell together.
If you enjoy a mystery with a slow, steady burn - then this is for you. I will absolutely be checking out other titles from this author.
Well if you’re looking to go to a beauty camp, which basically turns into a fat camp I would definitely stay away from The Clinic! I couldn’t put the book down and had to keep going to find out what was going to happen! I loved the fact this was completely different story line than the normal ones! Good read!
Six dewy-eyed women from different areas of life start what they expect to be a glamorous makeover stay in a supposedly luxurios beauty clinic. What they get is a horrendous ordeal in an isolated derelict former lunatic asylum where they are being starved and drugged, detained by grated windows and threatening security guards…detailed horror scenario, not for the faint-hearted.
The Clinic was so intriguing I had to get my hands on it. I'm glad I did.
Women will become their very best selves at the clinic under Dr. Cavendish's care. Her clients become today's beauty standards. The facility was once an asylum! I absolutely LOVED this aspect of the story and how it's woven in.
This was deliciously disturbing. Very Stepford Wives. Chilling and full of suspense. Fantastic page turner.
It is a gripping read that puts societal pressure on women to look physically “perfect.” I can’t stand books about diets and wellness centers. I still read them though lol.
I really enjoyed the ending of this book, about the last 25%. The first 75% was a really slow build up. Dr Cavendish wants to help women be the best they can be, beautiful. She hand picks women to be clients at her elite weight loss clinic. As long as you listen to her and do everything she says, you will be the most beautiful you. The building she has chosen for the clinic used to be an asylum and has quite the history, The women start to feel as if there is something not quite right about the clinic when some of the women start to "leave" the clinic.
This book was a very quick read. The premise was incredibly interesting and disturbing which obviously works for this type of story. That being said I strongly recommend checking the content warning before reading this because there are some very sensitive topics covered.
The concept of this book was so different which was something I thoroughly enjoyed!! Loved the twists and turns and the anticipation of where the story was going to go next!
I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I had expected. It was quite dark and disturbing and this just distracted me. I can see how many would like it but it really was not for me.
This was a new author for me and I will be keeping an eye on her. I liked that she had a unique twist on the popular theme of when wellness and beauty goes too far. The writing was good and it kept me interested from beginning to end.
This was a new author to me and will definitely be looking for more by her this book was good and kept my interest all the way through
