I loved this book - I worked with children in a yoga studio for years and would have loved to add this to the studio library for the kids and parents to check out together. Lovely book
I'm not sure how do review this book since I didn't much like it. Yet I can't pinpoint exactly why.
Perhaps it's how I felt it repetitive, even for litte children. It also seemed quite all over the place.
However, the message this book means was fine.
Kenzi Sits Up Tall begins with an author's note about teaching good posture, breathing and mental health which are really important for children in this day and age. The book features a rhyming story that talks about the importance of a good posture. You can tell its written by a chiropractor, as disclosed in the author statement, due to the thorough detail about posture. I am not sure if young children could sit through the length of the book and the story.
Kenzi Sits Tall is about a little girl who is struggling day-to-day with sadness, shortness of breath, and many other things. When Kenzi visits Dr. Bhattman, she learns a couple techniques that help to get rid of her ailments. The book helps to explain these techniques, so children of most ages will understand, all while keeping it fun with bold, bright pictures and striking fonts.
I honestly didn’t know what to expect from this book. The synopsis made it seem incredibly clinical, rather than a fun read for kids. And wow, was I so glad to be proven wrong. The “7-minute huddle” seems to be a great way to start the day and I love how Kenzi walked the readers through it. It allowed for the reader to feel like they were the friends/classmates she was explaining it to.
This book would be a great guide in implementing these techniques for classroom management (taking a breath, brain breaks, start of the day, etc.) and at home, as well.
My daughter enjoyed the pictures, techniques and gave it two thumbs up.
Thank you to NetGalley and Greenleaf Book Group (River Grove Books) for an advanced copy of Kenzi Sits Tall in exchange for an honest review.
This book teaches about posture and breathing and how a 7 minute daily practice can help improve your mental and physical health. The breakdown includes 2 minutes of deep breathing, 4 minutes of stretching and 1 minute of doing something kind for someone else. The author is a practicing chiropractor and is able to take the knowledge he has from his field and translate it into kid-friendly and simple information and instructions. The illustrations are unique, in that they are made of mixed media including photographs of hair and clothing and I think they would capture the interest of children. The text is also made up of a variety of fonts, often including 3-5 different styles and multiple colours and sizes on each page. While this might also be interesting to look at, it might also be challenging for younger children or struggling readers to read. I think the messages of taking care of your body, the importance of proper posture and mindfulness are all really great and would definitely recommend this book to parents and teachers of children in the 4-9 age range. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and voluntarily review this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC. This could be a good resource for older kids who are learning about the body and the importance of good posture, and what effects good posture has on the body.
I received an ARC of this book through Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is a great reminder for children to take care of their minds, bodies and spirit.
I don't feel the verbiage was always in line with the age group the photos appeared to target. There should be a glossary at the end to explain some of the terminology.
I appreciated the "fun facts" at the end. My 7 year old found them cool and a couple of them neither of us knew beforehand. I do think that the illustration seemed to be more attractive for kids 3-6, but the terminology used was for more of a 8-12 age group.
Either way, this book is a nice addition to a chiropractor or doctor's office to assist with explaining to children why they should take care of themselves.
Kenzi is so cute! I really appreciate a book about good health habits, especially as someone with chronic pain. I have EDS which causes lots of joint pain and immobility and I wish I had a book like this as a kid so maybe I would have had a better chance at managing my pain. The art style is so cool and I can’t wait to read this to my nephew when he’s older and my nanny kids. The only thing I didn’t love is that Kenzi gets up in her friend's business and assumes the 7 minutes will work exactly the same for all of them. Health is individual and I appreciate the message but it feels preachy.
Kenzi Sits Up Tall teach kids how to mind their bodies in fun way. The illustrations are cute and attract kiddos.
the story is about kenzi, who, besides being afflicted with headaches, feels unwell all over. as a result, she schedules a consultation with dr. bhattman, who helps her by demonstrating the 7-minute huddle, which teaches good breathing methods and practical exercies resulting in healthy postures.
this story is a great lesson for kids and a great reminder for adults! it is filled to the brim with eye-catching illustrations and charming couplets. all in all, a lovely read which ceaselessly highlights the relevance of meditation and good posture!
Kenzi sits up tall is a good book which tells the importance of good posture, breathing and meditation.. the liked the motto in the book -
Care for mind and body ,
keep your spirit light,
in only seven minutes,
you'll start your day right.
The book is full of rhyming couplets which made the reading realy interesting. if the kids follow the 7 minute huddle instructions of Dr. Bhattman daily than it will make their day better.
My Thoughts:
This book would make for a good read out Loud or share in a circle story at school or at the library. It teaches children or Adults the benefits of good posture and how that can change so many things that you are unaware of like your breathing your anxiety, back pain and headaches.
The only complaint I have is the way the book is laid out it has a lot going on and I found my eyes not knowing where to read first on a few pages. This may have been because it was a E-book? But beside that any book that can teach children how to help with their well being is a good book to read to them.
Thank @netgalley for letting me read this
Kenzi, an adorable little girl, is experiencing headaches and generally feeling poorly all over her body. She makes an appointment with Dr. Bhattman and he works with her to show her the infamous 7-minute huddle which teaches proper breathing techniques, doable exercises that result in good posture, and calming gentle mindfulness.
Truly desiring to combat her maladies Kenzi faithfully puts into practice the wise advice of the doctor in her every day life. Miraculously she begins to feel so much better. Due to her success she becomes an ambassador of spreading the good news about her recovery to her friends to help them feel well too.
The illustrations are vibrant, colourful and quite busy. I love the positive healing rhyming message of the book and highly recommended it.
Overall premise is good idea for little ones to be mindful of, but the first couple pages were hard to pull me in. There felt random rhyming & would’ve been better to have been more consistent throughout the entire book.
This book is adorable. The information is a great reminder for adults and a fantastic lesson for kids. On top of that, I love the rhyming in this book, it's singsongy and so fun to read. Also, the art is beatiful. The combination of photography and shapes creates a really unique effect and I loved the textures that resulted from that technique. All in all, this is a great one!
I think this book would be a good way to start a classroom lesson or use in a physical class such as occupational therapy or P.E.. I liked the creative use of found materials incorporated with the illustrations. I also appreciated the specific directions imbedded in the story, along with examples of where to apply them.
I admire that the purpose and end goal of this book is to promote posture, but I have to be honest, and say that I wasn't a fan of the layout. It was far too bright, and busy for me. I found myself trying to fins the message of each page and my eyes were just getting confused with all the colours and fonts and images. I wouldn't say it's a particularly child friendly book, especially for children who find reading difficult, but the ideas and methods in it are good to take on board when teaching children about posture.
