My son had found Zombie Makeout Club shirts and I really loved the style and when I saw this on Netgalley I had too check it out. This was interesting to say the least. I read it because it’s spooky season and was curious. It was ok but some parts might be disturbing for some readers.
This graphic novel was not for my taste. I don't know if I like it or hate it. The gore was disgusting and I didn't like it. Also, I didn't understand which was the beginning and which was the end
Since Halloween is only a few weeks away, I'd like to read books about horror, gore, and science fiction. Fortunately, I came across this intriguing title on NetGalley's Read Now list. I was hesitant to put this book on my shelf at first because of the cover, which I thought was an odd attempt to make the protagonist appear iconic and feisty. But I did want to try something new.
Yume is the protagonist of the manga, a girl who died after committing suicide (trigger waning) and has been resurrected by Gasmask, the main antagonist. The book follows her adventures after fleeing the lab where she was resurrected until she learns what happened to her.
Because of the short chapters, which frequently focus on character introductions, I barely had time to figure out what was going on during my first read. I even read some of the chapters twice to appreciate the format and narrative style because the dialogue and art didn't provide enough context. Its visually stunning pages, on the other hand, make me pause and wonder if the fault lies with me, as I rarely read manga and am only familiar with the style of superhero graphic novels. The author's note at the end persuaded me otherwise.
The manga lacked storytelling brilliance and became preoccupied with creating remarkable aesthetically pleasing illustrations. Probably because it aims to be more experimental, using multiple character illustrations per chapter to present each character's narrative. Despite these flaws, I'm excited to read the next volumes in the series (I've already added the first episode of volume 2 to my Webtoon to-read list.) and will recommend the manga to anyone looking for a quick Halloween read.
Thanks to NetGalley, Diamond Book Distributors, and Ablaze for the digital ARC in exchange for this honest review.
Actual rating: 3.5/5 stars
(P.S. After seeing the cover gallery at the end of the book, I grew to like the main cover, though Gasmask's portrait is my favorite.)
I was surprised to come across this little graphic novel and a little excited, I had seen the Zombie Makeout Club clothing brand a few months ago and had really admired the art style. I had no idea that a webtoon had been created from the series and being a fan of all things horror, I thought it’d be cool to check out.
Unfortunately, this graphic novel was all style and very little substance. I shouldn’t have been surprised since this is a tie-in to a clothing brand seeking to appeal to anime and manga fans, but I was hoping for a little more from it. The author mentions in the afterword that he was inspired by classic Japanese cyberpunk films and I can definitely see the influence, it provides some context for sure for the experimental style, but I don’t feel that it translated well to the far shorter comic format. The story is almost nonexistent and rushes from scene to scene, the plot beats are explained in just a few short panels before moving on to the next character. What little story there is makes little sense, and the characters feel paper thin.
There are a few pages included at the end from the author’s Demons Zine which helps to understand one of the characters a little better. There is some potential in the plot in the zine pages, though it is a rough work that could use a little more time to develop and polish these ideas. At the very least, the art and aesthetic is fantastic and a real treat to flip through. Overall though it just wasn’t for me.
Zombie makeout club vol. 1 Deathwish in my opinion was a great graphic novel/comic. i really loved the artwork and the story line and i am looking foward to see where the story goes from here.
Truly original, Zombie Makeout Club takes the humor of Warm Bodies and the gruesome nature of The Walking Dead and creates a zombie manga that's full of creepy, wit, and horrifying ambiance.
I respect that this is the author’s first work. It’s a commendable feat to create something and have it read and critiqued by many. That being said, I didn’t really care for the story itself. I found it to be a bit too confusing to follow along to. I think adding the summaries at the end was a good idea because I could then see what the author was trying to get at.
The artwork is definitely my style. I like the dark, gorey, cyberpunk look and setting of the story. There is potential here, it just needs fine tuning.
I liked this but actually haven't got a clue how to explain it. I know that doesn't make much sense but it's the best I can do. I mean I feel like I had an idea of what was going on most of the time but then the story would get a bit off kilter like we were supposedly experiencing flashbacks of the girls life before her suicide but the transitioning confused me.
It's gory and is about suicide and rebirth (zombies per say). I love zombies and have just gotten into graphic novels/manga and am totally enjoying it so this was the best of both worlds for me! Even though I am a bit confused I would love to continue on with this and see what happens.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing this copy for my honest opinion.
The author's note at the end said that this was his first comic, and it definitely shows. While the illustrations were interesting, the story was difficult to follow with either too much or too little going on. It was also difficult to get a sense of when everything happened in relation to each other.
I will note that the page layouts were much more interesting than other print versions of scrolling webtoons that I've seen which shows a better care for the different needs of the two mediums than others do.
The author has some potential for interesting comics down the line, but the work shown here just isn't quite there yet.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
This was a massive miss for me. The story seemed almost non-existent and was all over the place. Maybe because it's the first volume and it's doing introductions to the characters, but it does a poor job of it. This story also has a TON of gore, and it all appears to be very gratuitous. This entire volume seems to be only focused on aesthetics and how much gore can fit in it, and is sorely lacking in the storytelling department. I know only bare-bones facts about a few characters, but I'm left mostly confused about who is who, and what everyone's motives are. The only thing it has going for it is a good art style. It's not my favorite, but it is good from a technical sense.
I absolutely love the art style in this manga. It's quite gory and very fun looking, good use of power tools throughout. I can't tell you what the story is at all I have no idea what happened at all but it was just so much damn fun to look at.
I really enjoyed the artwork of the manga. The style suits the genre.
This is more of an introduction to the characters and the story than anything else. The author gives the six characters small sections to give a glimpse of the past and what is happening in the present. He also includes how the this story came to be and from concept art and for that made the tie in better after the fact.
If I am honest, I was really confused at first but once I let it sit with me and go back and look at the tiny details that I missed it made me excited to see what is next for the story.

High school student Yumi wakes up in a weird lab after ending her life. Completely confused as to why she’s been brought back to life she starts navigating through the lab to find some answers.
Let me first start out by expressing my love for the art style in this comic. It drew me in instantly and held my attention, which is exactly what I want in a story heavily focused on visuals.
This is definitely very gory and I love it!
Unfortunately the story is kind of confusing (at least to me it was) during my first read through. I did read this twice and I also read the extra tidbits at the end explaining the story more in depth. Having that extra bit of information at the end definitely helps get a better feel of what’s going on.
I do think this is a very interesting story, I hope there is more to it that the author will release. I wish we got just a bit more information on the characters themselves, because from what we did get I was very intrigued.
I’ll definitely be keeping a lookout for other works by this author and to see if this story does in fact continue. I definitely recommend you read this if you like manga and horror!
Gorey, gross, hideous fun! A wild story from beginning to end with amazing horrific art. Right in time to get cozy with some screams.
im gonna give this one a 3/5 stars… so let’s start with what i didn’t like.
i’m gonna be honest… i have no idea what just happened. I found the story VERY hard to follow and i’m still very unclear on the storyline. Though, at the end, the author did say that it was abstract which I suppose is very very true.
I’m sure if I understood whatever was going on in the story, my rating would be higher, so i’m curious to see other reviews on this manga!
Now onto what i did like!
I absolutely ADORE this art style. The visuals in this manga are amazingly gory and just beautiful to look at. The characters have very cool and unique designs as well.
I do look forward to reading further volumes should they be released, as I do want to enjoy this story… whatever its about. lol!
Thank you NetGalley and Diamond Book Distributors for providing me a copy of Zombie Makeout Club Volume 1!
This manga has amazing artwork and it depicted gore very well! I can even see some of the pages being used as posters or wallpapers. One downside is that the plot was difficult to follow as it jumped from past to present back and forth without any indications. Overall, Zombie Makeout Club definitely has some cool elements and I am curious to see how the story unfolds!
This manga is a kick in the face in the best of ways. The art style is gorgeous - with a lot of gore. It does body horror well.
The plot lost me some however. The story seemed to jump around a lot, and I couldn't tell which scenes were supposed to be in the present and which were supposed to be in the past. I am certainly curious for more though.
