Purely out of understanding for why this was written?
Unexpected content. Meaningless info which is not worth of reading the way it was presented.
Cover is good and painting in the book too but for rest content was not meant to keep the reader in line to finish well.
For me it is very dissapointing: 2.0/5.0
Thanks to Netgalley and Greenleaf Books for the ARC of this!
This was not my favorite animal poetry, but there was nothing really wrong with it. I’d definitely pick it up again when talking about savannah habitats. My kids enjoyed it!
While a children's book, the easy language and the glossary of animals in the back would make this a fabulous addition to any Biology classroom. There are great examples of Biology themes like: symbiosis, biomes, animal relationships, and even conservation. I loved the illustrations and was DELIGHTED by the animal descriptions in the back because even as a science teacher, I wasn't familiar with a few of the animals.
Can You Spot the Leopard? An African Safari is a nonfiction picturebook written and illustrated by Karen B. Winnick. It is an African safari presented through poems and full-color paintings. Readers begin at sunrise, climbing into a jeep for a bumpy ride to view the wondrous animals as they would on a real safari. All the poems are based on real observations of what animals do in the wild, related in an accessible way. There’s even a sighting, finally, of the elusive leopard, before returning to safari camp under a starry night. At the back of the book, further information is related about each animal. A fun, informational, educational adventure to read and reread.
Can You Spot the Leopard? is a lovely and engaging read. I thought the artwork was very well done, and a perfect pairing to the text. The text had a nice flow and does a good job of capturing the animal life it focused on, and the terrain. I liked the speed and excitement changes, which keeps the readers engaged and interested. I think the animals covered were all the expected creatures, favorites and familiar to the target readers. I did really enjoy the information at the end of the book about all of the animals that make an appearance in the story. The only thing I might have liked added was some suggestions for further reading or perhaps zoo websites where young readers (with their adults of course) could learn more about a favorite animal and maybe see them in action or in photographs.
This children's book (target audience 7 or 8 years old) takes young readers through a day on an African safari. Beautifully illustrated, it shows a wide variety of animals and gives some facts on each. A treat for animal lovers.
My thanks to Greenleaf Book Group Press for allowing me to read a copy of this book through NetGalley. All opinions in this review are my own and are given freely.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. This was a great read about the various animals you would see in Africa. The drawings were great as well. I like that the back had incerpts about each animal in the book. This would be a great book for kids learning or wanting to learn more about African animals.
Join us for an African Safari an learn more about 🦒🦁🦓🐘🦩and more!
It’s perfect for children ages 7-9 years old, so kids in elementary school would enjoy this the most!
The illustrations are beautiful as is the writing.
It’s a book that I think is best savored bit by bit, reading a little before bedtime each night or perhaps in a classroom where a few pages can be read at a time and then we can talk about what we learned and saw on our journey. It’s engaging for kids and the back of the book tells you more about each animal which I thought was cool.
Can You Spot The Leopard ? by Karen B. Winnick is a good book to learn animal. The illustrations are beautiful along with facts about them
A day in the life of Africa, as we see all the safari animals we might possibly wish to see, in this picture book. Simple but very nicely done portraits are accompanied by verse that rhymes half the time, perhaps, but is neither too weak nor intrusive. It's just allowed to be a gentle accompaniment to the visuals, and to kind of frame it all in the structure of a day's trek. I don't think I'd have rushed to re-read it as a kid of the target range, but any teacher worth their salt could easily use this as inspiration for our own animal verses and observations. To that end, and for the visual craft, four stars seem right.
An adorable story book spinning a new tale on safari animals. The art is whimsically beautiful, and the storyline is easy enough for children to follow along to as they learn about exotic creatures.
Can You Spot the Leopard?

This book is a collection of beautiful oil and pastel-ish animal illustrations. They're done in a rustic art style with a muted color palette. With every animal illustration, we learn fun facts or poems about each animal. I really enjoyed this book and learned something new. I'd recommend this picture book for all the animal lovers out there; it would make a great addition to anyone's library.
Thank you, NetGalley and Greenleaf Book Group, for an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This children’s book showcases many safari animals and teaches kids a bit about each one. My kids were searching for a leopard on each page, so the title was slightly misleading for a kid! The illustrations are well done, though there is a picture of lions and vultures shredding and eating meat that my younger child didn’t like. The writing is poetic, and I liked the pages at the end that gave facts about different animals.
Thank you to NetGalley and Greenleaf Book Group for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion!
The artwork in this book was breathtaking and the poems were interesting to read. I would 100% recommend this book to people of all ages. I found that the information in the back of the book was very descriptive and helpful for younger children who may need more knowledge about specific animals. Overall, I felt like the author did a great job with this book! I find children's books difficult to rate due to length but I believe this one deserves 5 stars!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!
The pictures in this book are beautiful. The book does a really good job of showing all the different animals and their purpose in the circle of life. The book does depict a lion with an animal in its mouth, so I would recommend this book for older children. I love that there is a description for the animals in the back of the book. Great animal book for kids!!
