In 1914 Remington Culbreath meets Louisa Adair when he visits Ocracoke for the summer with his cousin. Remington is spending one last summer of freedom before he has to settle down to the career his parents have chosen for him that is deemed suitable for the family name. Louisa’s best friend is in Paris, and she dreams of someday traveling as well and going to college, which would be a big step for an innkeeper’s daughter. Rem and Louisa don’t plan to fall in love that summer, but they do. They come from two very different worlds, though, and when war breaks out Rem is called back to England to serve his country.
In 1942 Evie is delivering breakfast treats to the men at the Coast Guard station on Ocracoke who are on high alert for U boats and U boat victims when she stumbles across an unconscious man on the beach with horrible burns. He wakes up enough to tell her his name is Sterling Bertram but not much else. He obviously came from the British ship that was just torpedoed, but he is not in uniform. She decides to secretly care for him at the inn with Grandma See and Uncle Garrett until she can find out more about him, and in the meantime she’ll wire Davie to see if he can confirm his status as a British operative.
As Rem and Louisa’s possibly doomed love story and Evie and Sterling’s hunt for a German spy on Ocracoke unfold, ties between the two timelines and the mystery of why a spy would come to Ocracoke are revealed.
This starts off a little slow, but once I started figuring out that there are ties between the people in the two timelines, I was turning the pages faster to figure out how those ties were possible. Rem and Louisa’s story seems doomed from the start. It is stated that Louisa has slightly darker skin though her mother is blonde, but her mother refuses to tell her anything about her father, just that he was a good man and is dead. The woman Louisa has always called Grann is a former slave, but Louisa doesn’t know if she’s really her father’s mother, or just an adopted grandmother. As her story unfolds readers really get to ponder what it must have been like for those of mixed race in the South in the years not too long after the Civil War and the lengths their families went to to try and give them a better life. Figuring out if or how Rem and Louisa could end up with a future was what kept me turning pages, and there are little clues dropped in the WWII timeline with increasing details as you get closer to the end of the book and the grand reveal in the WWI timeline. It was a tantalizingly written time slip plot line with just the right amount of reveals to relieve some tension while enough questions left to keep you turning pages as fast as possible to see how in the world things worked out to get to where they are in WWII. I also really liked Evie and Sterling and how they both use their training in undercover ops to puzzle each other and the German spy’s location out. What made this an extra fun novel was that White wove in characters from all her other series. Rem eventually works in room 40 with Barclay and Margot, and their “family” adopts him. It was quite fun for me to spend more time with them. That’s the only other series of White’s I’ve read in its entirety thus far so they were the ones I recognized the most. The author lists in the back of the book all the other characters from other series who appear. So this will be an extra fun read for fans of the authors other series as well as a good pick for fans of WWI and WWII historical romance thrillers.
Notes on content: No language issues. No sex scenes or anything beyond a kiss on page. Part of the WWI plotline involves a woman who was given the impossible choice of having her loved ones killed or becoming a Nazi officer’s mistress. There is a ship sunk by torpedoes in the WWII plotline with deaths mentioned but not described and a survivor with burns (only minimally described). There’s a WWI battle scene in which two people are shot (minimally described) and it is mentioned a family member has died in battle. Other deaths in war, storms, and past hate crimes are part of the story but not described. Louisa and her family experience racial prejudice. Two mothers are threatened with children being taken from them, it happens to one of them.
I received an ARC of this title from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
“That’s the best way, I think, to handle what life throws at us. Grab hold of it. Make whatever we can with whatever pieces we have.”
I was so moved by this story- about people who face difficulty and hardship with bravery, love and hope in the One who is best at making beauty from ashes. The author weaves two timelines in such a beautiful way, with characters that will stay with me long after I close the pages.
If you are a fan of historical fiction, I can’t recommend you checking this one out enough!

In Yesterday’s Tides, Roseanna M. White jumps between World War I and World War II to tell a sweeping story of faith and family. I loved how White explored both of these conflicts from a different location than normal: Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. Through this location she was able to explore themes of race, class, and more in a way that was both thoughtful and thought provoking. As with every one of her books, White has clearly done her research which is evident in the depth and texture of the story. I loved the characters in this book with Evie, Sterling, Remington, and Louisa capturing my heart and interest as I read about their individual struggles and stories. I also enjoyed the references to characters from other books by White. While it took me a minute to find my footing in this story because of the multiple timelines and narrators, in the end it all came together in a wonderful story that was well worth reading.
*I received an e-arc of this novel. All opinions are my own.
Yesterday’s Tides by Roseanna M. White is an exceptional work in historical fiction/romance. Spanning two generations, two world wars, and the Atlantic Ocean, this dual-timeline story will immediately grab your attention. I always love the mystery between timelines in stories like this, and in Yesterday’s Tides I was completely obsessed with knowing how Louisa and Rem’s story from the WWI era would blend into Evie and Sterling’s WWII era story. The history surrounding the U-boats off the east coast of the United States is fascinating. Ocracoke Island is charming and inviting, a perfect setting for holding secrets. And the romance is genuine and swoon-worthy. I fell in love with the strong women in this story who battled through prejudice, injustice, and persecution with strength, grace, and faith. The spiritual wisdom and maturity of these ladies inspired me and challenged me in my own walk of faith–a mark of a great Christian fiction novel in my eyes.
There are many references to Roseanna’s other books in Yesterday’s Tides, but I haven’t read them all and never felt out of place. Historical romance lovers will want this at the top of their TBR stack.
I was given a copy of this book by the publisher with no expectations of a positive review. All opinions are my own.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Y’all, I have been waiting for this novel for years. When I first began reading Roseanna M. White’s books back in 2016-2017, I found her blog and scoured her archives, digging up details about old stories she’d been working on. One of those was Yesterday’s Tides, a contemporary about Remington and Louisa and an inn on an island.
Suffice to say I immediately fell in love, but this story never came into fruition...until The Codebreakers series released, and one of the cryptographers in Room 40 was named Remington Culbreth.
As my younger sister once said, “I just knew, ew it, ew it.”
Yesterday’s Tides was to be reborn. Naturally, I bugged Roseanna about it until the day FINALLY arrived, and YT was on its way.
Cue my anxious anticipation for the culmination of my years of patient yearning.
To be honest, I hadn’t the foggiest notion what to expect from YT—I just knew that, despite it all, I would love it. See, I typically hate dual-time fiction (okay, not quite hate; it’s just not my favorite), but this is Roseanna M. White, y’all. And two historical timelines. And a dude named Sterling, for crying out loud! (I adore that name, FYI.)
I was right, by the way.
I loved it.
I loved it so much that I downright hated it, let’s be honest. This book had me literally feeling the panic. There was so much of that evil angsty back-and-forth and just plain good writing and all the questions and omgosh I barely survived this book.
(SPOILERS SECTION: Okay, so like, I knew Rem and Louisa were going to get together, stay together, etc., and have Evie and Davie, but SWEET LORD did Roseanna put me through a lot of crap to get to that! I LOATHE the divisive mother trope—although Rem’s precious father made up for it—so just everything that Edith did drove me absolute NUTS, and I couldn’t get over how well Roseanna wrote it, to keep everyone guessing about who was who and what was what. I mean, in my heart of hearts, I knew Aunt L was Celeste, but HOW?! HOW?! And Y’ALL THE ANGUISH. THE ANGUISH. MY SOUL COULD NOT BEAR IT. I could not stand for Rem and Louisa to be separated for SO STINKIN’ LONG. *sobs*)
Basically this book was just a huge slab of heartache made from tree pulp and ink.
I loved it.
Apart from the mutilation of my heart, my only “real” qualm is that IT WAS TOO SHORT. In the plot/development/characterization/romance department, that is. I had more than enough anguish, believe me. I wanted so much more of Sterling and Evie, and Louisa and Rem, and just the beautiful, sweet romance stuff...and the war-related intrigue and that situation at the end (both situations, actually, which was really the same situation in two separate timelines). I feel like we missed out on the wonder and the beauty and the intensity of it all—and to be honest? The characters were lacking some development, in my opinion. For example, I knew very well the differences between Evie and Louisa, I just had such a hard time keeping them straight regardless. And Sterling and Rem deserved so much more page time, because they were such lovely boys—men, I mean.
But technically, for me to want more of something means it was good, so there’s that.
Also, please read this in one sitting. Don’t read this over the span of three days, trust me.
If you couldn’t tell by now, I loved both timelines equally (very much a rarity, if that’s ever happened) and all four of the characters. And aaaalllll however-many of the side characters, which were SO fun and well-written! THE CAMEOS THOUGH GUYS. THE CAMEOS.
I’m a bit ashamed of myself that I missed Elsie, but in my defense, it’s been years since I read Circle of Spies, and since then I’ve read at least three hundred other books, so. *shrugs*
The cameos were easily the best part, as well as how vibrant and lovely the setting was! Of course, Roseanna wrote everything in her typical excellent fashion, including the setting. Ocracoke came to life, along with its people, and now I simply must visit! (Granted, I’ll probably visit the Scillies first, but then again, Ocracoke is a heck of a lot closer, so we’ll see. 😂)
Even though there was far too much plot for there to be any real character arcs/growth, there were some lovely themes that I know everyone will love and enjoy! Really every novel of Roseanna’s just leaves you with this beautiful feeling and appreciation for life, and I think that’s one reason why I love her work so much. I never feel depressed or ranty or confused or angry or apathetic after reading one of her books. I feel a little more inspired and in love with life, you might say, and grateful for the wonderful God who gave it to me.
Yesterday’s Tides is no exception, and it truly was worth the wait! (Even though I still want a contemporary romance from Roseanna one day. 👀)

I've read and enjoyed many of this author's books and I now have a new favorite! Yesterday's Tides is a stunning historical fiction saga with dual timelines that cover the lives of several family members through both WWI and WWII. Author Roseanna M. White weaves mystery and romance in this book that's primarily set along the North Carolina Outer Banks on Ocracoke Island, and her fans will recognize her dedication to in-depth research. This book showcases her amazing ability to combine true facts and fiction, and I especially loved that so many characters from her previous books are featured in this story!
I've come to expect characters with strong faith and moral values and White certainly didn't disappoint me! My heart was stolen by the intriguing human connections and the touching faith message, as these families deal with the ugliness of discrimination, deception, death, and war. This time-slip novel is truly a testament to the power of hope, faith, and love and a compelling reminder that our actions of yesterday may very well alter our tomorrows. I highly recommend Yesterday's Tides to all who enjoy historical Christian fiction!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and publisher. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.
Yesterday’s Tides takes place during 1918 to 1942.
A intriguing historical fiction that gives more insight and details into code breaking during the War. The author also provides awareness of the hardships citizens experienced living in an occupied country.
I dearly loved the main characters.
The faith based message throughout the story was beautiful.
Definitely a very engaging story line that kept me engaged and intrigued right to the end of the book.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Thank you to Bethany House & NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book before it's publication date! This in no way affected my review, opinions are my own.
More & more often I'm finding myself reading books thinking, "Oooohhhhh this would be such a good film!" and this book was one of them!
I really enjoyed the dual timeline narration in this one, and loved that it took place primarily in the Outer Banks (a string of barrier islands and spits off the coast of North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, on the east coast of the US) because I've spent some really great time on so many of those islands! (Including Ocracoke, the island where the female MCs live)
I thought the premise of both timelines was intriguing (albeit occasionally slightly *too* convenient) and I really liked the main characters - both strong principled women willing that didn't take any sass from anyone!
The only thing that felt ~slightly~ lacking for me was the Big Bad character (oh believe me, you'll know them when you see them) because they were just SO horrible and I felt that without a POV from them it was hard to really wrap your head around their motivations (in theory, sure, but I wanted to really understand instead of just being told).
There is faith content in this book, and it's described by the publisher as "faith thread: medium" which I think is pretty fair. It all seemed completely appropriate and realistic, and I enjoyed its inclusion.
Ultimately this is one I will for sure find myself recommending!
Roseanna M. White has penned yet another fascinating historical fiction tale in her book Yesterday’s Tides. This dual timeline story is set mainly on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, during WWI and WWII and is populated with many intriguing characters. With obvious deep historical research, White made these perilous times come alive for me and gave me a desire to visit this location. I enjoyed meeting Louisa and Remington, Evie and Sterling, and all the various people in their lives. The two intertwining stories were well-written and kept me turning the pages. I will admit to a little bit of confusion during the first part of the book when there were so many different characters to keep straight and two different timelines, however, I soon sorted it out and thoroughly enjoyed the tale.
Brimming with adventure, intrigue, history, romance, and inspiration, this is a riveting story that historical fiction lovers will find enjoyable. It was such fun to meet up again with characters from some of White’s previous books which she was able to work into this story. I highly recommend her books to those who enjoy clean, wholesome, and beautifully written historical fiction. 4.5 stars

Yesterday's Tides is a compelling, engaging, and absolutely lovely story! Roseanna M. White weaves together a dual-time novel set during both world wars, with complete mastery. It covers two wars, two continents, and two generations. Additionally, she has at least mentioned, characters from all of her English-set novels. What a treat!
I loved all the different characters with just as different backgrounds. From the courts of England to the beaches of North Carolina. Each one with a profound and crucial impact on the story. I also really loved the setting of Ocracoke Island in North Carolina. Especially knowing it's a real place, I'd like to start planning a trip today!
I just cannot say enough good things about every single aspect of this book...from beginning to end, this is an exquisite work of Christian Historical Romance!

Have you ever read a story that was so thoroughly thought out with tiny nuances that made the story completely compelling and fascinating the more you read it? Because that here is this book, my friends!
I didn’t think I could love @roseannamwhite books any more than I already did, and then she sends this perfect little (heartbreaking!) story out into the world.
This isn’t only dual POVs, but it’s a dual timeline. Tracking the story from 1914, from the throes of The Great War, through 1942, until the start of World War II. And both story’s were so effortlessly combined while being wholly separate and complete on their own.
I had my heart shattered in the “Yesterday” timeline several times. And the way it ended made me cry ugly tears, but happy ones (for the most part). And honestly, I couldn’t have asked for anything more, considering I thought it was going to end solemnly.
Remington and Louisa (and their family) have my entire heart. And I don’t think I’ll forget their story anytime soon. It is forever written on my heart, especially the ways we saw God play a part in everything that occurred in theirs lives for the entire 4 years they were separated. I’m not kidding when I say I cried SEVERAL times.
The “Today” timeline was thrilling and helped put all of the puzzle pieces of the story together correctly. I loved seeing how the past had affected Evie and her Ocracoke family after WWI, but I loved watching her and Sterling sort out the pieces together and fall in love in the process. Their story was just as heartfelt as the first, but offered more healing.
This entire story was filled with deception, love, intrigue, faith, friendship, family, grief, strength, codebreaking, and secrecy.
If you love artfully mastered tales woven between the World Wars, and the trials and tribulations that they brought to families near and far, filled with love of all kinds, than this is the book for you!
Beloved author Roseanna M. White returns with a heart-rending story of war, love, and loss spanning decades.
When one considers the close proximity in which the two world wars took place, it is only logical that lives would have been deeply impacted by both conflicts. This idea is played out blatantly throughout Yesterday’s Tides. In this work of historical fiction, we are offered dual timelines on the becoming island of Ocracoke in the outer banks of North Carolina. We see not only the effects both wars had on the lives of those living on the island, but the effects of the different ideas held by society in each era. Themes of racial inequality as well as the oppression of women are portrayed through Louisa in the WWI timeline. Her romance with Rem is a sweeping whirlwind, though it comes with seemingly insurmountable challenges. It is heart-rending to read of her separation from Rem, the two divided by ignorance. Yet Louisa proves a strong heroine that is as charming and intelligent as she is beautiful, making her a delight to read about. And in the WWII timeline, Evie carries on her mother’s legacy as she runs the inn. A woman of strong faith with a big heart, she is so caring of everyone that she comes into contact with. Her habit of collecting sea glass as a reminder of prayer is endearing. And while it takes a backseat to the unraveling of family secrets, Evie’s romance with Sterling is enchanting, as well.
Long-time readers of White will relish all the threads of her past stories woven into this book. Myriad characters from her prior series make appearances in Yesterday’s Tides, providing a plethora of fun little Easter eggs for readers to look for as the story unravels. We’re also introduced to a new cast of varied and complex characters in the pages of this book. Generations of Louisa and Evie’s family make appearances throughout, adding depth to this richly layered story.
Ocracoke Island is a character itself in the book. The enchanting setting with its mysterious nooks and crannies creates the perfect backdrop for a story of war and romance and family secrets.
Fans of historical fiction won’t want to miss this mysterious, endearing, and tenderly told family saga. Highly recommended!
All opinions expressed are my own. Many thanks to Roseanna M. White and Bethany House for a complimentary copy of this book.
When I pick up a book by Roseanna M. White, I always know that as gorgeous as they are on the outside (seriously, this cover!!), the story on the inside will always be just as beautiful. Yesterday's Tide is no exception. It is a beautifully written dual timeline that draws the reader in. There are times that I struggle with dual timelines, as it can be difficult to fully be drawn into both equally. This one was not like that at all. Even with it's two historical timelines and multiple POVs, it all came together quite effortlessly. I found it to be a beautiful blend of historical content as well as romance and drama. If you enjoy dual timelines or historical romance, this is certainly one that is worth checking out.
** I received a complimentary copy for consideration. All thoughts are my own.
What an amazing story! The way Roseanna wove this dual time story was spectacular! Fantastic characters and an unputdownable story make this one of her best, and I am an avid reader of all her books. This is going to be one of my favorites of hers, no question. I loved everything about this book. A truly wonderful read!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher but also purchased my own audio copy. I was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
It’s been a while since I have read a Roseanna M. White story. I totally forgot what I was missing out on. She has a way of writing a story that is so captivating and intriguing. The story is a dual timeline, which takes place during World War I and World War II. I will admit it was a tiny bit confusing at the beginning. Figuring out which characters belonged to which timeline, also learning twice as many characters and their unique backgrounds proved a challenge. But the storyline had me from the very beginning, and I knew pushing forward, everyone would fall into place. Roseanna is a master storyteller. She can weave words together, like a musician creates a beautiful Symphony. The complexity of a dual timeline, many more characters and plots is challenging, yet she was able to write a beautiful historical romance. Intriguing and compelling to keep you fully engaged and immersed in each page. The characters are deep and strong in their love and conviction. The history is well researched and portrayed. I appreciate the authors note at the end, that describes how this book came to be and the details of writing it. I also loved the appearance of many characters from her other books. They enhance the story, if you have read other Roseanna books. But this can certainly be read as a standalone. I plan to reread this book often. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres to read and when the story has a dual-time setting, it can’t get much better than that. Roseanna White has done a great job in writing Yesterday’s Tides. It is an amazingly captivating story of Intrigue, romance, wartime, and faith that spans across the two World Wars. The characters are vibrant, compassionate, and strong, and each with poignant backgrounds with which readers can easily relate. Interest is kept high with action and unexpected twists and reveals in the story. This multifaceted story kept me turning the pages, wondering how the characters were related and their stories would connect. Readers who enjoy historical fiction and romance with characters who will remain in one’s thoughts for a long time will not want to miss the riveting story in Yesterday’s Tides. I read a complimentary copy of the book and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.
Oh my…this book…is absolutely amazing! I could not put it down! This is no ordinary WWI and WWII book; the way both stories are connected with family and friends that survived both wars is simply captivating. It felt like a puzzle and throughout reading, each piece slid into place. I loved all the characters’ personalities and their growth throughout the book; they each had their unique qualities. This book was very well researched and wonderfully descriptive and emotional, with a perfect blend of intrigue. One of my all-time favorites! Highly highly recommend!

Dual timeline story about two generations of women running an inn on Ocracoke Island in North Caroline during World Wars I and II. The story was interesting, although I had a bit of a hard time keeping the characters straight among the two timelines. Still a worthwhile read.
Yesterday’s Tides - the latest release from Roseanna M. White - is a beautiful split time historical novel. At first, I struggled a bit with the WWI time period. While I loved the characters, Roseanna tackled some hard topics. I appreciate the way she handled even the difficult subjects that made me uncomfortable, because everything came together to tell the amazing story of Louisa and Rem.
In the WWII timeline, we meet Sterling and Evie. Roseanna expertly weaves both timelines together in such a unique way. Through all these characters we see the beauty of family, both family by blood and family by choice. Also, she writes some of the best grandmothers in historical CF. We can see their love and strength carried on in the children and grandchildren they help raise.
This is a story I grew to love, full of characters I did not want to leave. I definitely recommend Yesterday’s Tides - if you enjoy Roseanna White, you will love this. If you are new to her, but enjoy well-written historical romance, you will also love this story.
I received an early copy for review. My opinions are my own.
Yesterday’s Tides by Roseanna M White is a standalone novel which I very much hope turns into a series. I loved it, I hated it – the plot had my emotions swinging all over the place. But isn’t that what makes a book so good? My only “complaint” is that it took me a few chapters to realize that the story is split into two timelines – one set in World War I (Remington and Louisa) and one in World War 2 (Evie and Sterling). Had I read the synopsis on the back I would have known what was going on immediately.
The book was amazing. I’m not usually a fan of split timelines following separate couples but White did an incredible job of pulling you into the plot. The two stories wove together and intertwined across the years as you were drawn into the lives of each character.
Remington and Louisa were my favorites and I felt their relationship was much more fully developed than Evie and Sterling’s. They faced prejudices in several forms, deception, and separation as they grew and developed individually and as a couple. Evie and Sterling also had to deal with misperceptions as they fought their way to truths long buried. White will keep you guessing about all the connections right through to the end.
I loved the history and Ocracoke was a beautiful setting for much of the story. White really brought it to life in all its color and history. If you’re already a fan of her books, you’ll love seeing some familiar characters from all her previous series’ make small cameos or be referenced.
I highly recommend the book. History, romance, mystery. It’s got it all.
