I suspect this book will divide opinion regarding the answers to kid's questions. Much will depend on denominational leanings but as a basic primer for further discussion it is useful.
Kids Big Questions for God by Sandy Silverthorne is an informative book about huge questions about God that kids have. I liked a lot of the answers and respected the ones thatI didn’t necessarily agree with (and it’s ok, not to agree with everything). I did learn a lot and gleaned from it. Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book. My review is also on Goodreads.
While I understand that this book is for kids, I would argue that there's no reason to lie to them. This book does have many good points, but the errors in it are glaring. Because of the theological issues, I would personally not recommend or purchase this book.
-Within the first few questions, we read that God loves everyone exactly the same yet then Jesus is the only way to eternal life. The logical question of thought would be, "if God loves us all, why does anyone go to hell?" It's possible for us to teach our children that God loves all in some ways and some in all ways (That's a J.I. Packer quote).
-"Hell is completely cut off and separated from God" - why is this stated as such a fact? You can read a lot of differing opinions on this but if God is omnipresent, then He must also be the one ruling in hell.
-Sin is sin. We don't have to dress it up and call it "bad stuff". Bad stuff can be cooked broccoli, sin is not that.
-The language of this book flows between universalism, semi-Pelagianism, and Arminianism. That God gave Adam & Eve a choice between following Him or not isn't what Genesis describes. God gave them a choice in obedience. They didn't even have knowledge of evil so they couldn't comprehend what their sin would result in.
I was given a digital ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Do your kids have hard questions about God? Do you want a great resource that’s fun and full of faith building facts? This is the book for you.
When we don’t have the answers we look to the Word and that is exactly what this book does. Presented at an elementary age level there are easy to understand answers with room for discussion. Sometimes as parents we don’t know what to say to our children’s questions about God. This book helps clarify scripture and stirs up a child’s natural curiosity, allowing them with parental help to come to conclusions that build the foundations of faith.
I worked with children in a Christian childcare center for years and this book is one I wouldn’t have hesitated to give to each one of my teachers and to the parents. I recommend this book not just for the children who learn from it, but also for parents who might have been seeking answers to some questions of their own. Great book!
I was given a copy through NetGalley courtesy of Revell. This is my honest opinion of the book.
Wonderful book to help answer kids questions about the Bible! I would purchase this book to add to our bible class.
I requested this to read from the viewpoint of my Y3/4 class who always come up with amazing questions on a number of different topics. The book is simply laid out with the text carefully broken up into manageable chunks. Each section begins with a question followed by a relevant biblical quote. There are also talk it over and did you know boxes to enable full engagement with the text.
I enjoyed reading this and can it being a book that I could easily dip in and out of as required.
As this was an advanced copy, the art work was not available to view.
