I gave this book to my 18 y.o ahead of starting his engineering degree as lateral thinking is key. He said; It was very good, it taught me many new ways of generating ideas, as well as giving multiple methods for making those ideas better. Some of the riddles and lateral thinking puzzles in the book are a bit of stretch which I don't think many people would get, even if they are well-versed lateral thinkers but overall it was a great introduction to Lateral thinking.

Paul Sloane is an excellent advocate for lateral thinking and has written many books on the subject, including several with puzzles. This book starts at the beginning but rapidly takes you deep into ways of thinking that will improve your creativity, keep your grey cells busy, and just entertain you.

The book is full of stories of people who have taken a sideways look at a problem and found clever, innovative solutions. But throughout there are enough ideas and guidance that any one interested in the topic could learn new skills.

I enjoyed reading this book and I will definitely be revisiting it to take some notes on the skills and ideas described. I was given a copy of this book by Netgalley

I enjoy reading books about thinking and making decisions, including findings ways to approach things differently. So, this book certainly appealed. Having read the book, I have mixed feelings about it. The first part of the book was about examples from history and business and sport on thinking laterally, or from unexpected angles, to achieve new or different outcomes. However, as I read this part, I kept asking myself - where are the women? Based on the examples given, you might think no woman has ever had a new or original idea. For a book about lateral thinking and challenging the normal take on things, well, it wasn't very innovative and appeared to only see examples of what men have done as worthy of inclusion. Odd to say the least.

Later parts of the book were practical examples of a range of techniques for how to think about things. But not all of it was about lateral thinking, some of it was about things like memory techniques for public speaking, which seemed only tangentially on topic. Perhaps slightly bucking the trend of this book, there was also one example (of the many given) in this part, which was about a woman - a former CEO of Xerox. It's good to know there's at least one woman we can learn something from.

The book was useful but not groundbreaking if you've already read more widely in this area. However, many will find it useful to at least think about whether they can take a new approach to tackle things in a different way.

I really enjoyed the beginning of this book, it had me totally sucked me in. I did then find there were so many short examples of lateral thinking that they had less of an impact once I reached the middle of the text. I would have enjoyed more tips on how to achieve it at that point. Overall though, I think if the book intrigues you from the get go you will find some value in the insights it provides. A quick and easy read.

This is a solid personal development book with short easily digestible chapters that challenges you to think differently. With sections that provide both historical & modern example as well outlining tools and exercises to encourage lateral thinking I’d recommend this for anyone interested expanding their thinking.

This had a couple of fresh ideas which were interesting, and I will be using them. I've heard a lot of the anecdotes and companies.
There wasn't much about the moral aspects of the solutions that come out of the exercises. The push for profit seems to be the emphasis here.

A lot of good intentions, thoughts and holds good potential. Sadly it didn’t quite deliver in the way I had hoped. Chapters feel a little disjointed and Paul’s ideas become hard to follow. Great concept, but execution could’ve been better.

A first class guide to lateral thinking. I read the de Bono book on lateral thinking but haven't read another one since, until now. And I am not disappointed. The detail of how Freddie Mercury got his record of Bohemian Rhapsody accepted by the record company was particularly interesting, but the book was fascinating and needed an update done well, since de Bono's book was published years ago. I stress the done well bit, because the book was done well. Well done to the author, Paul Sloane. It was a difficult task, but he achieved it.

‘Lateral thinking involves deliberately adopting an unconventional point of view in order to conceive unusual ideas and solutions.‘
This is an extensive review of lateral thinking and the many formats of ways to think it has encouraged us to think differently, or what used to be called ‘out of the box’. There is the Disney method, the Six Hats. and there are lots of examples of businesses started by lateral thinking and of businesses still using this approach.

I enjoyed the section on examples of lateral thinking in warfare, Wooden Horse,Hannibal, Nelson etc, but I also liked the section on asking questions. Here he stresses the importance of lateral questions to finding out. An example is ‘what does a tickle look like? ‘ which lead to Mr Tickle, Many great examples in the book of how curiosity lead to great things.

This is suitable for beginners to lateral thinking. It is also suitable for those who enjoy a good dip into a book.

I read a copy provided by NetGalley and the publishers. My views are my own.
