The Disney chapter books are a good fit for middle grade readers who want to read a familiar Disney story at their level. This was cute and made me nostalgic for camping, while also giving some insight into friends and kids we don't get along with. Cruella de Ville is a tricky character to introduce because her villainous behavior leads to animal cruelty. Sensitive readers may not like her attempts to harm animals. Ultimately she decides to leave the camp without a redemption story. The main character is able to apply the lesson of looking beneath the layers to her other friends however.
I think if we look at this on the surface of "what was Cruella like as a kid?" and a magical camp adventure, it's a fun read. Good for readers who want a familiar character as they begin reading longer chapter books.
Ever wonder what Cruella was like as a kid? Look no farther! This is a story about when Cruella went to camp.. She was more interested in the rare and exotic animals than in all the other camp activities... a little too interested. Can Cruella resist her instincts?
What I loved: Bloom is constantly trying her best to make camp the best it can possibly be, the magical creatures are delightful (and I love their drawings), the magic and magical mishaps.
I liked this one for what it was. I can see why littles would enjoy it too. Recommended 7-10.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own."
I enjoyed reading about Cruella's adventures at camp. I'm guessing there was a book prior to this one that explained the narrators story, it reads like we should know who Bloom is, but I was at a loss.
I really enjoyed how that Cruella stayed a villain the whole way through. It did not go the poor misunderstood girl root.
I'm going to see if I can find a first book for my niece
I expected more Disney references in this early chapter book and was disappointed. While I think the author did a good job of laying the groundwork for what you'd expect a young Cruella to act like, the storyline lacked pizazz and I think they could have done so much more with these characters.
For fans of "Unicorn Academy" by July Sykes, look no further than "My Bunkmate Hates Puppies" for your next favourite series! This book is filled with humorous antics, gorgeous illustrations, and valuable lessons on learning to get along with others.
It was so wonderful to read this with my 6 yo. She absolutely love Disney princesses and of course 101 Dalmatians is one of her favorites. We enjoyed several nights of reading both her me and together. Thank you netgalley for the arc and exchange for a honest review
There is a lot going on at this camp! The characters are unique which helps make the story interesting. I enjoyed their interaction and the main characters' thoughts spelled out for you made for a fun read. I liked the story, there were just a lot of "new" words. An example of what I mean...they created creatures for the story, so the names of these creatures are made up names. For the age group this was written for I felt that might hinder them from enjoying the story. Some children may find it difficult sounding out the names or trying to remember which creature name goes with what kind of creature. Overall, though, it was a great story for children who enjoy magic and peculiar characters.
I want to love this book for my library, because I know so many little villain fans. It is an interesting premise — a summer camp style setting with magic, where one of the campers is a young villain. However, I think many of my readers will be expecting more of the Disney story / more Disney characters. I also have difficulty figuring out where I would place this in the library. Based on the plot and story length, I would have expected it to have many more illustrations. By the time my readers are reading chapter books with very few illustrations, I worry they will have outgrown this plot. Others may feel differently depending on who their library serves.
I love these books about Disney characters that expand the universe. This is a cute one. I do think the trend towards villain focused stories is interesting.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This one was a DNF for me. I read a lot of beginning chapter books. A lot of them. Some are incredibly enjoyable, some are decent, others are tolerable but I only read them for my son or daughter. This one was rough. Once I stopped reading I simply could not make myself start again.
