My First Book of House Pets describes different pets that families may have. It encourages appropriate shelters for each animal. Recommended ages 6-10
This would make a great book for teachers when discussing different house animals, as well as for parents. The book was wonderfully illustrated and the story was simple. I would not recommend this for a kindle because the pages were split and maybe my format was not well suited for my kindle version. I liked that the author used a variety of house pets to introduce to the reader. The story was quick, but still gave detail for each animal included. I did not feel like I missed out on a certain house pet and felt that the author included some animals that I may not have even thought of which was a nice touch.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book.
My First Book of House Pets is an adorable read for any family contemplating pet adoption. The illustrations are colorful and the text is age appropriate. It made me really happy that the author stressed the importance of animal shelters.
This book would be the ideal gift for any child who wishes to get a pet. It offers some very helpful introductory information about the most frequent pets you can find. It's well illustrated, concise and useful.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The illustrations were cute and featured a fairly diverse range of kids and pets. We loved how the book asked questions for my little reader to answer. We’ll be checking out other books in this series to learn more about house plants, growing food, and recycling!
My First Book of House Pets was a cute story about the main types of pets that people would have in their homes. It laid out some traits of the animals, shows that they need to take pets to the veterinarian, and that they need to be played with. The illustrations were very good and my 5 year old son was able to identify most of the different animals.
Thank you to duopress labs and NetGalley for allowing myself and my son the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
I read this to my daughter and we had a fun experience. She was pointing and naming the pets that she recognized which was wonderful.
I give 4.5 stars for this fun and informative book with a quirky and engaging art style. I like that it's a board book made of non-toxic materials - perfect for my little one who likes to rip paper and put things in her mouth.
I appreciated that the book communicated important messages about pets. For example, it states which types of housepets like to be held and which do not, and it suggests choosing a pet from a shelter. However, I thought it was a bit too heavy-handed to capitalize some of those phrases. I also thought it was strange to emphasize pet safety and happiness, then depict a dog running loose in a park with no collar or leash. (Maybe that's just me being too picky, since I do not think a toddler would see that and just set a dog loose!)
Overall, this is definitely a book I would buy for my toddler. I think she will really enjoy it.

This is an adorable book with many different house pets in it. The illustrations are adorable and hilarious and I think kids will love it!
Love that this book focuses on getting pets from a local shelter! You learn about a variety of different house pets from dogs to turtles and more. Cute read.
Thank you, Netgalley and SOURCEBOOKS Kids, for the ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Cute and simple, this book explains different types of pets and why you may like to have each one as your own. Very easy to understand with interesting illustrations to look at, this book is great for a first introduction to the world of owning a pet for young readers!
Cute and nice little illustration book for kids to learn to love their animal friends even more. Thank you the author, the publisher, and Netgalley for sending me this e-ARC.
This is a great, simplified introduction to the wonderful world of being owned by, er, owning a pet. Written for young children, it's designed to both caution and prepare them for bringing a pet into their lives. I liked the fact it didn't only focus on the usual dogs and cats but included the likes of reptiles and even fish. No, it doesn't go into any real depth on the expected care needed for each but offers some guidance. My take on the book is that it's designed to be a stepping stool for dialogue between families as they ponder whether or not to make the commitment needed for certain pets, even noting that some do not particularly enjoy being handled.
Another plus, the fun illustrations offer not just a variety of possible pets but a variety, ie diverse, of humans. It's a subtle reminder that just as our pets may be different, so are their humans. It also suggests visiting your local shelter in your search for the perfect pet, another plus. I'd add contacting area rescue organizations, too, as my own Daisy dog came from that source.
Bottom line, while some may quibble about the sparse, basic info, remember who this targets: young children, not adults, although it should be a guide used by those same adults to guide the process. It should be used to open discussion. Thanks #NetGalley, #SOURCEBOOKSKids - #duopress for reminding me of the joy of not just a first pet but pets in general. They do help make our world better.
The book talks about different animals and encourages you to go to a shelter. It was a lot of fun to read.
4 stars
This book perfectly illustrates its title. It uses the picture book format to go through a variety of different pets that someone could have in a home and a bit of interesting information about them. One thing I particularly love is how in the beginning it says the best place to get a pet is the shelter. If more books would do that it would be very helpful to the shelters in all neighborhoods.
Already posted to goodreads this was a great book. Vibrant pictures wide scope of pets see full review on goodreads 5hanks
very cute book, it will help children know more their daily companions, the illustrations are adorable !
Such a lovely book about house pets! The drawings are cute, the text is great for reading aloud to a younger child. I love that there is a book out there that tells that house pets can come in various forms, not just cats and dogs, and I also love that the responsibility of taking care of them here is not pictured as a burden, but as a loving thing to do.
Overall Impression: Very cute baby/toddler book about house pets
What I liked: I loved the illustration style, very well done
What I would change: Some of the words are complex, but I wouldn't necessarily change it
Would I buy it? I would buy this for a baby or toddler, especially if they are interested in animals
Would I tell a friend to buy it? Yes, if their child is interested in getting a pet or learning more about house pets
This is a good book for kids to teach them about different house pets and how they need to be cared for. It's got bright pictures and many different animals.
