Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me free access to the advanced digital copy of this book, as this book has already been published, I will not share my review on Netgalley at this time.
This was "fine". I've really enjoyed Iliza's comedy specials in the past and was eager to see how her style translated into (audio)book form. She did a great job narrating, but I do feel her narration actually highlights the points where her stand-up would have been a better medium for a certain topic. Many of the chapters felt like preachy/tone-deaf/overly-personal-and-therefore-unrelatable rants. I haven't read any of her other books (is it books? or book?), and I think in a different format I could be more interested, but mostly I came away feeling that this should have just been a stand-up routine.
Iliza is HILARIOUS! Definitely listen to her reading her book. I enjoyed all the chapters but Nostalgia was a great one. I want to watch her stand up now. Get this audio book and listen when you want to laugh out loud.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher/producer for the audio copy of this book.
Well this was both silly and fun. I hadn't heard of any other books by Iliza, nor seen her stand up on Netflix, so this was a completely new introduction to her work.
And wow, does this woman like to rant. I swear the first half of this book covers why a whole bunch of things are rip offs or tricks played on people to feel like they need items when they don't. After that, she complained a bit about women's problems and having kids.
The parts I really loved most were the short glimpses of her life with Noah. She manages to be really respectful to her partner and it's clear the love they share between them. I mention this mainly because that's not always obvious when a comedian decides to use the people in their lives as part of their routine.
Yes, I completely see that she's a comedian first and she's obviously very self aware about how her trains of thought just run on and on. And maybe it's because she really let that part of her way of thinking/performing let loose in this, but I felt it was more of a memoir than a typical comedian novel. I definitely enjoyed the narration but, while it was definitely entertaining, it wasn't anything special that's lingered with me afterwards.
She pokes at least as much fun at herself and her expectations of the world around her as she's poking at everything else. Probably I'll go on to seeing what other stuff she's done after enjoying this.
I LOVE Iliza Schlesinger.
Of course, after listening to her book, not only am I her target audience of the “elder millennial” but I agree with her on the majority of her opinions that she wrote about.
I loved the nostalgic parts and being able to commiserate about turning 40 with the pressures of perfect appearances while dating or marriage, and her journey in pregnancy and miscarriage, moments were painful but still relatable and she made her point that we should discuss these issues more.
I’m glad I listened to this as an audiobook because it captures Schlesinger’s story with her humor and voice. I’d recommend this to fans of her show and others around my age who appreciate the wit and humor.
All Things Aside is a wonderful honest look at the life and opinions of Iliza Shlesinger. Her humor shines throughout the entire book. The side comments mixed with the main narrative were amusing and relatable to how my thoughts work. Shlesinger's remarks on product marketing and the scams women have to deal with are hilarious mic drops of truth. The honesty and compassion shown in sharing the details of her miscarriage and the state of the healthcare system are harrowing while offering suggestions for ways we can be better as a society. This is a great read for anyone looking for a comical glance into the mind of a woman.
Special thanks to Netgalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
First of all, I just. have to say, I love receiving acceptance for audiobooks on netgalley! It's a great way spend my time while also consuming both fictional and educational content on this platform. Memoirs are specifically my favorite content to consume through an audiobook, because whether or not the author is narrating the copy, I feel like I'm going on a journey with our main storyteller.
I love her stand up. I laughed the entire book. Thank you to #Netgalley for this advanced listening copy. Being a huge fan, I was thrilled to read her newest book. Iliza discusses her personal experiences with miscarriage and infertility, as well as topics such as the cancel culture, speaking out despite being afraid to offend others, surviving the pandemic, and misogyny. Excellent on audio and a must-listen for anyone who enjoys feminist female comedians like Margaret Cho, Ali Wong, Taylor Tomlinson, Chelsea Handler, or Amy Schumer.
Iliza is just as hilarious as always! I have seen Iliza’s work on her Netflix specials and read her first book as well. All Things Aside holds up next to the rest of her work. It is both funny and deeply relatable. Shlesinger is an excellent narrator, no one could have read her work and made it as funny as her. Loved this book and highly recommend for anyone looking for substantial, kind comedy.
I love Iliza Shlesinger. I loved this. The fact that she narrates the audiobook makes it that much better. It sounds just like one of her stand up specials.
I did not finish this book.
I could not get into it -- I will try again, but not as an audio. I thought that since I like the author as a comedian that she would he hilarious to listen to. This was not the case.
I have read a few of Iliza Shlesinger's book before but I think this may be my favourite. I really liked the authors narration and the whole book was a fast and very entertaining read. I will definitely be recommending this book to my library customers that are looking for a fun and relatable book.
I love Iliza!! She’s absolutely hysterical and I really identified with this book as we are exactly the same age and going through our fertility journey at the same time. Hearing Iliza read her book added so much to the novel.
Shlesinger is as funny as she is insightful. This book will grab the heart of all readers, but especially the millennial woman. Confronting some common situations with humour and a critical eye, Shlesinger makes us laugh and think!
Iliza Shlesinger's comedy doesn't translate as well into book form. All Things Aside felt more like aimless blog posts preaching her opinions, with a handful of bright spots of funny or touching anecdotes.
Thank you to the Publishers and NetGalley for allowing me the ARC of the Audiobook.
I really enjoyed the book overall and most of her opinions. I enjoy her comedy and her book did not fail to have me laughing along with her. I truly enjoy when the author narrates their own work because it is read they way they intended it to be!
If you are like me and have exhaustively memorized all of Iliza's specials and are seeking more of her wit, hilarity, and insight, look no further than this book! and you HAVE to do this on audio. It's literally like listening to her stand up, but with a bit more substance!
So, I’m probably the outlier, but listening to this on Audible, I needed to slow down the speed. She talks very fast. If you like Iliza’s comedy specials, you’ll like this. I enjoyed much of it. It did feel like the last 30 minutes were somewhat thrown together. I do like her unabashed opinions on topics. Thanks to NetGalley for a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
I really loved the format of this biography, a mix of topics and rant about and life moment of Iliza. I have read Schlesinger's first autobiography 'Girl logic' which has a few hot topics which were also handled masterfully and Schlesinger delivers again with humour and tact. Plus the fact that she is narrating the book herself adds to her comic style with the voices that fans already know and love. The book was written well and interesting all the way through which can be often hard to do with biographies. But this was more of a series of essays with anecdotes which were about some truly serious topics which fans would like to know about more.
I look forward to any other anecdotal essay-type books that Iliza produces and would absolutely love it if Iliza put her true feminist comedic genius into the fiction genre.
Iliza Shlesinger is one of my favorite comedians. Her stand-up is just so incredible, so I was excited to see her new book in audiobook form with her narrating! It was hilarious, poignant, and perfectly weird. Absolutely for fans of Iliza (duh), but anyone interested in hilarious essays on everyday life.
