Great stories told from the best. It felt like watching her shows live. Highly recommend. Hilariously entertaining with the Ilizia style.

I love the author's stand up so I was very excited to get an audio ARC from NetGalley to preview. I absolutely loved her observations and descriptions of everyday occurrence. I recommend this book for fans of Iliza or anyone looking for a few laughs.

Interesting stories about what it is like to be a person, be a woman, being pregnant, and more. It does get a bit rambly, which works well as an audiobook but I worry that this may not translate as well if you are reading the book.

Just as each of Iliza Shlesinger’s stand-up comedy specials gets better, her books seem to be on the same trajectory. Girl Logic was great, but All Things Aside is more grown up, just as Iliza herself, and even funnier. From stories of 90s nostalgia to miscarriage, Iliza documents pieces of her life with wit and honesty. The audiobook is especially good as Iliza narrates it herself, so fans of her stand-up will love her voices and intonations. This is a must read for some lighthearted essays that put into words how many have been feeling during the pandemic. It’s relatable, it’s fun, and listening to it is a great way to pass the time on a long walk or drive.

From nostalgia to scams and mushrooms to motherhood, Iliza Shlesinger gives readers a look inside her mind. The narration was well done and a fun listen. The stories were timely and full of sharp wit and refreshing humor that even those unfamiliar with her standup will enjoy.

I enjoyed this audiobook so much. I adore Iliza as a comedian. I find her perspective brutally honest and intelligent while also laugh out loud hilarious. Listening to the audiobook is really a must. She might not be for everyone, but I love her.

Let me start by saying I am not a fan of comedy shows, I know this makes me a weird person on the planet but I just am not into them. There is one comedian however that I will always watch clips of her jokes and that is Iliza Shlesinger.
So when I was given a chance to listen to her audiobook by NetGalley I had to say yes!

Iliza covers almost everything and anything in her book even going to talk about her own miscarriage as hopes of normalizing it so other women don't feel alone. Listening to this book was like listening to your best friend rant about everything going on in her life and I just soaked it all in!

I highly recommend the audio book because Iliza telling her own story leads to humor in all the right places and just adds that much more to the story.

* Thank you Netgalley for a copy of the audiobook in exchange for my honest review.

I liked this book, it felt almost like listening to a podcast instead of a book. I found it to be a bit too ranty in some spots and I didn't agree with some of her (strong) opinions. I would have liked a little more humor, but the book was relatable and I liked that the author narrated it herself.

I am only a couple years younger than Iliza and we both grew up in the same metroplex. I like her stand up shows because even the ones about marriage and dating (things I don't quite understand the way she other women my age do) are funny and relatable.
One of the only hang-ups I had with this book is the term/idea canceling (my hang-up won't matter because all of Iliza's thoughts presented in the book are correct). I don't like when famous people refer to people deciding to quit listening to someone or deciding to quit patronizing someone by giving them money for a performance they no longer support as canceling or cancel culture. These are usually consequences of bad/criminal behavior or an opinion their fans didn't agree with and while there are financial stakes, most performers make a come back regardless of what they did. It just felt a bit flippant, the way she used the word/phrase.
Otherwise, I thought the book was extremely funny and interesting. There were a quite a few thought provoking sections and instances where I remembered exactly why I have never interacted with so much of social media. Iliza is a public person and there are things that come with that an introvert will never understand (and some I roll my eyes at realizing my sister does similar things). I really do want to recommend this to my sister who may enjoy it as well.

Every woman who enjoys stand up comedy should read or listen to this book. It is honest, it is relevant, and it is laugh out loud funny.

This was a quick fun listen written by a comedienne who was new to me.
I was attracted to the cover because for some reason I kept wanting to scratch the green off of her teeth, But besides that point, this was a fairly entertaining comedy which I mostly could relate to as I'm a little older than the comedienne. Overall quirky jokes making fun of our American culture and how overly sensitive we can be as humans these days. I didn't agree 100% of the time but it was by no means offensive. And if someone takes offense , they have no sense of humor and should be reading historical non-fiction books!

Iliza Schlesinger has been my hands-down favorite comedian for many years, and I was so thrilled to find her book on NetGalley. “All Things Aside” was hilarious and sentimental - a must read!

Do yourself a favor and just listen to the audiobook, which reads like an extended stand up routine combined with depth of personal experience that you would get with a stage performance. Very entertaining and has the depth of a memoir. I listened to it all in one day and felt like I wasn't quite as alone in my thinking as when I started the day. Fans of Iliza's stand up will enjoy this performance.

Thank you to Net Galley for the advance audio copy of this title. I had never heard of Iliza before I selected this audiobook. She is a whip-smart "millennial" whose social commentary is delivered with a healthy dose of humor. In this book, she describes the heart-wrenching experience of enduring a miscarriage during the pandemic without the support of her husband, and having to endure tone-deaf medical professionals. She is hysterically vocal about the treatment of women in the healthcare system, and the possibility of the right to choose being taken away. Although these are heady topics, her tone and delivery keep you chuckling out loud during the whole book. After listening to this titles, I was compelled to view all of her Netflix specials, and am anxiously awaiting her next move.

I've just recently discovered this amazing comic force. While watching Celebrity Jeopardy, the author was a contestant and turned a serious, trivia-driven show, into a relaxed and funny one. Then, I was thrilled to be able to listen to her comedy, thanks to Net Galley. It was a hilarious listening experience mixed with her own special brand of right-on realism.. Having her as the narrator made it even more of an event.
I am a new fan and anticipate being an old fan because she's an introspective riot!

I am so glad to have listened to this book on audio! The narration by the author and the book itself were comedy gold. I love Iliza Shlesinger’s standup specials and the perspective on culture that she brings to her work. This book felt like the perfect pairing to her recently dropped Netflix special. I was hoping she would discuss motherhood and its many layers in todays society— and she did so throughly. She is equal parts funny and appropriately vulnerable. If you like her comedy, you will enjoy this listen! Thank you for the advanced copy.

“All Things Aside is a punchy, honest, incisive book that shares a view of the world through the eyes of the inimitable Iliza Shlesinger. From the macro to micro, Shlesinger tackles it all with her no-bullshit comedic style.”

This book was a gem.

How is it I’ve never heard of Iliza before? She and I are contemporaries. Her childhood was my childhood. Except, you know, she grew up in Manhattan (pop. 2 million), and I, in Beaverton (pop. 666).

The nostalgia was THICK in this book.

You can smell the Teen Spirit from here.

That generational connection (she calls herself an Elder Millennial) gave this literary interlude all the warm and fuzzies.

Her topics were deep and wide, but mostly just true and amusing.

Some of my favourite quotes:

“This isn’t a history book and, for the most part, the guys came first. They always do.”

“You ask women, “Is it hard to have it all?” women don’t answer, “You mean commanding a spice trade, enslaving an indigenous people, dominating the globe, and having as many children as possible with no regard for human life in general? Just trying to conquer outer space before Susan!”

“No matter who you are, you are constantly being told to strive for the opposite: Are you rich? Give more money away. Are you poor? Get rich, quick! Do you have things? Downsize. Are you not treating yourself enough? Get that that boat. Get this credit card. Rack up debt. Use our debt consolidation app with the cute, weird name that belies the severity of giving a random app all of your banking and personal information!”

The best part is, as always, having the author narrate her own stuff. She’s a comedian, so obviously, her timing is GOLD.

Maybe if you skew either Boomer or Gen Z, this might not hit you the same, but I still think it’s worth the time.

7.5/10

Thanks to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for this ARC.

Iliza is an amazing comedian, but I feel she is even more of an amazing author. I love her honesty and realism. She talks about subjects that most feel are taboo. She speaks openly about her personal experiences which are not always humorous.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book, and I know Iliza better for hearing HER tell her story.
Not only do I recommend this book, but I highly recommend listening to the audiobook. She speaks her truth and it is enlightening to hear her speak about the way she feels about being treated and respected as a woman.

I'm such a huge Iliza Shlesinger stand up fan and this latest book did not disappoint!! Not afraid to address sensitive topics, Iliza covers cancel culture, speaking up despite being afraid to offend anyone and everyone, life through the pandemic, misogyny, plus more personal experiences with miscarriage and infertility. Great on audio and highly recommended for fans of feminist women comedians like Amy Schumer. Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early audio copy in exchange for my honest review!
