I loved this small town mystery. Dimpna hasn't returned to her small town of Dingle for years, as it brings back memories that she doesn't want to deal with. But the past is catching up with Dimpna. Her parents are being framed for murder, she learns her son has been in Dingle not too long ago and he has discovered her long held secret.
Her late husband killed himself when a scandal caught up with him and Dimpna has been targeted ever since. Her money seized her veterinary practice closed she is out of options. So when she returns to Dingle to help her parents she also finds that her father is in the early stages of dementia. To help his veterinary patients and herself Dimpna decides to stay and help.
This is a good mystery with ties to her past and an inappropriate attraction to the detective looking into the murder case. This is the beginning of a new series and it definitely made me want to read more about this small town and the eccentric people who live there. The narrator brought you into the story with her Irish accent and kept you listening.
A dark mystery thriller about a small town in Ireland where a prominent man turns up dead. I found No Strangers Here to be intriguing and well-written. My only complaint is that I typically prefer books with a faster pace. If you're a fan of gritty mysteries, I recommend this book for you (please check content warnings before reading, though)!
I really didn't know what to expect from this book. I enjoyed the author's cozy mystery books and I enjoy darker suspense mysteries, so I gave it a chance. What a well written story. Trauma, lies, deceit, on so many levels by so many people. There were several twists and turns that shocked me. I did not want to put this down.
I really enjoyed the audiobook and the narrator. I definitely feel like it added something more to the story.
I look forward to future books in this series.
Overall, this was a good thriller. Was it the best of its genre? Not really. However, this is Carlene O'Connor's first foray into the realm of a grittier thriller instead of a cozy mystery and I think in that context she did a great job. I liked the characters but they could have used more characterization overall. I would consider reading another book in this series, but I hope it will be a little more fast-paced than this one which ran rather slowly for a thriller. There were some random pieces that I didn't understand the context for - like the Tarot cards. Character
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington for this ARC.
Thank you Netgalley for the advance audiobook copy of No Strangers Here by Carlene O'Connor in exchange for an honest review. I specifically wanted this book as an audiobook since I was hoping the narrator would have an Irish accent, she did! It brought the story to life so much more than the mangled accent I would have had in my head reading it. I also tried this author because my mom loved her cozy mysteries and since this book was sans cozy, it was more my style. I loved it. A good, hearty mystery with a who dunnit, past rape and horse death, and lots of family secrets. Very well written and kept me engaged till the last word. I'll be on the lookout for more by Carlene O'Connor.
This amazing Audiobook, No Strangers Here, had me crying and screaming. I had to make sure not to listen around people because I was so emotional. I love that. I was especially moved by the lines about euthanasia. As a former euth tech those really resonated with me. It is a sacred act.
I also loved the Misty part. Oh man I was relating so much to that I started crying and then the emotions shifted.
It was lovely.
The narrator did an amazing job. She conveyed all the right emotions perfectly.
Don’t expect the cozy mystery vibe that O’Connor is famous for here, this is a dark and brooding mystery. Veterinarian Dimpna Wilde has returned home to Dingle, Ireland after the untimely and scandalous death of her husband, If she was hoping for a quiet respite from the upheaval she left behind in Dublin, she’s sorely mistaken. A bizarre murder has the local authorities looking at her family for the crime because of the bad blood between the Wilde’s and the murdered man’s family. Enter DI Cormac O’Brien and DS Neeley, who’ve been tasked with solving the murder. This is definitely a departure from O’Connor’s usual fare, but it’s a welcome one, leading many reviewers to liken her to Tana French
This was a wonderfully crafted novel with fascinating characters, gorgeous scenery, and a perplexing mystery. I loved getting to know Dr. Dimpna Wilde and her family, as well as the other residents of the small town. She’s such a strong character. There was so much wrapped up in the past that comes forward and gives the story more complexity. I really enjoyed this story and can’t wait to see how the series continues.
Thank you RB Media, Recorded Books and Netgalley for an audio copy of the book.
I just needed to read / listen cous I saw the cover and read it was happening in Ireland.
I have not read for a while an investigation book and this was really greeping. I could not stop listening. Ireland, a small town, secrets, family maters and crime. What do you need more?
