i must say i thought this book would be rather cliche with a extrovert/introvert relationship. it definitely was in some aspects, but it had its own spin on it that i personally enjoyed. skye definitely is someone who i thought i would not like when i first began the book, however every chapter i found myself intrigued on her outlook on things. now she did do some bad shit to matthew but i think by the end she was really able to redeem herself. matthew definitely was a bit too good for skye but i think that’s what made the book work especially with the extrovert/introvert angle.
additionally, the way that humphreys include family ties with the canton cards was something i didnt expect but did enjoy. i love a good sister dynamic especially within a dysfunctional family like theirs. and it definitely opens up the opportunity for more books which is so exciting bc i cannot wait for sam’s book.
my favorite part had to be the end (SPOILER WARNING!) when skye does her grand gesture. typically guys do the grand gesture in books bc they are the ones who screwed up, but not here which is why i think i really did enjoy it. her grand gesture was something absolutely incredible especially considering all they had gone through beforehand and i think it was a perfect way to tie up the book.
Opposites attract in this story of an introverted artist trying to strike out and make her own name and her extroverted business tech wiz love interest. The romance between the two of them is enjoyable for the most part. I definitely wasn't expecting the twist in the middle that connects them. I felt like all of the pop culture and social media references were spot on and added to the story. I think the author really wrote to the introvert experience and captured a complex character within Skye. Skye has been through a lot and it has manifested into the life she leads throughout the book. That being said Skye does think/say a lot of genuinely rude, mean, and misogynistic things towards other women when she is feeling jealous or insecure in her relationship with Matthew. Whenever she would get caught up in her issues and have these thoughts; that's when I wanted to put the book down. I know that people get mean thoughts when they are in uncomfortable situations. But women hating on other women based off of assumptions and calling names was a little much. It brought down the potential sweetness of the romance and a genuine journey of a woman trying to maintain who she is amidst her burgeoning career plans and romance.
Thank you to Net Galley for the ARC; all opinions are my own.
There was something here. I liked the romance whenever it doesn’t lean too heavily on the miscommunication/willful non-communication to keep the tension going. The deeper parts of their relationship were great and they had this natural fun side when they were together I really liked. Skye’s friendships were very genuine, fun and supportive. The way the author portrayed the introvert experience in this book, also very nice. Incorporating text messages and social media posts nicely into the story, also well done, great.
What I didn’t like about this book however was some of the writing style, that just wasn’t my thing, and well the constant misogynist speech. If it had come from some dude or was in this to make a point about something this probably wouldn’t have bothered me this much but 99% of it came from our female main character. I get insecure behavior, I really do, I understand struggling with jealousy, but the horrible comments Skye kept making about other women - women she in all but one case never met, mind you - were not that. Calling women ‘bimbos’, ‘tramps’, ‘hoes’, ‘skanks’, etc. goes beyond insecurities and just makes you a nasty person. Do we genuinely need to resort on women-on-women hating over a man of all things? Or was this supposed to be entertaining?
In this book we follow Skye Canton, who is sweaty, quite awkward and very clumsy. Skye is an upcoming artist living in NYC, who wants her art to become her income. She sometimes still works for the family company; Canton. But she wants to prove her family that the arts can also be a way to get a stable income. However, everything changes when she meets Matthew James, the guy who sits next to her on a plane, and almost immediately fall in love (so, heads up for the people who don’t like insta-love). Matt is everything Skye dreamed of, however, even if everyone is cheering for them to become a couple, Sky has her hesitations. Matt reminds her of her past, where she learned that whatever is hot, will burn her in the end.
I have lots of thoughts about this book, there were things I definitely enjoyed, and some I didn’t. My “main” issue was the insta-love, and due to the insta-love the main characters lacked some chemistry in the beginning. Everything just felt a bit too forced and I missed the spark Sky and Matt should have. Everyone loves the romances for the spark, right? Everything just happened too fast, so there was no time for the chemistry to build up. However, the chemistry did end up being there, but it should have been there in the beginning, not at the end.
The forced feeling was overall something that was present in this book with certain scenes (especially in the beginning of the book), nothing really happened spontaneously or felt very natural. This made it a bit hard to get in to the book in the beginning, however, it definitely got better towards the ending! I definitely feel like everything grew in the book, the writing got more confident, and everything was so much more natural, which made the book so much more fun. The chemistry finally appeared between Matt & Skye and overall the book got so much better.
The one thing that did end up being confusing from time to time where the way the text messages where written down. That could’ve been a bit better, but maybe that is also due to the format I read it in (on my ereader)
Overall I ended up giving this book 3,5 stars. It was definitely a fun romance book to read, and I would recommend it to friends.
This was a cute rom com that had me smiling for most of the book. I felt like the beginning was a bit slow and I felt disconnected from the characters. There was a lot of sisters and I the relationships weren’t as developed as I had hoped but the last half really hit home for me.
This was too good - I laughed out loud A LOT reading it. Skye was so endearing and I really rooted for her. I finished this and immediately downloaded Things I Always Wanted because I couldn’t get enough of Skye’s family, and I cannot wait to read the rest of the series.
I really enjoyed this one and can’t wait to acquire it forever our women’s romance fiction section. They had me at living here best introvert life as I can certainly relate to Skyes artist lifestyle which gets abruptly interrupted by Texas boy Matt. I loved the dynamic between Skye and Matt and loved reading their chemistry develop and flourish throughout the course of the book. It was a great 5 star read.

Skye Canton is focused on her goals: Make it as an artist in New York, quit her dayjob, finally prove herself to her family back in Oklahoma. Noise canceling headphones on, brush in hand, #livingherbestintrovertlife.
All of which gets blown to bits by a gorgeous, smart, magnetic Texas boy turned Manhattan man-about-town.
Matthew James is full of surprises, tempting Skye to give in and reveal her own secrets. Her bestie, her sisters and even her grumpy cat are on TeamMatt. But he doesn’t fit into her well-drawn plans.
Plus, he’s so smooth and so hot…he reminds her of her past, where she learned the hard way - when there’s this much heat, she’s bound to get burned.
Review:
Skye and Matt are perfect for each other and Skye is the only one who doesn't know it. I loved their ineractions from start to finish. It was hard reading about Skye and her anxieties and insecurities, but I felt like I knew her and she was a friend I wanted to watch suceed. I wish we'd gotten more perspectives from Matt to better understand some of his decisions, but I liked their relationship trajectory and how they learned to trust each other.
The Canton family was so interesting and I literally cannot wait to read about Sam's story.
Synopsis:
When an introverted artist catches feelings for an extroverted executive, exactly how sweaty, awkward and embarrassingly painful will her fall be? (Spoiler alert: very.)

This is opposites attract taken almost to the extreme. A chance encounter on a plane is the starting point for a slowly-developed relationship that shouldn't work - at least, according to Skye. I was a little concerned that her "I shouldn't - but I want to - but no - but yes" vacillating would get tiring if it persisted too long, but fortunately the plot progressed at a good pace, showing Skye's complexities, her awareness of her strengths and weaknesses, and the glorious level of snark she displays in her internal monologues, her texts, and her interactions with Matthew and the others around her. It's a well-rounded cast of characters: a best friend who supports but doesn't enable, sisters with just the right balance of mutual annoyance and unconditional love, and Matthew, who is utterly straightforward compared to Skye but saved from being two-dimensional by the way he acts (and a too-brief glimpse of his POV). Solid four stars, and I'm very interested to read the follow-up when it appears.
An introvert/extrovert romcom.
Being an introvert myself, I really connected with Skye. The need to have alone time after “peopling” too much, then throw in some anxiety, some social awkwardness, and a splash of klutziness. Yep, that’s me!
So will her relationship with an extroverted, life of the party, tech guy work out? She’s not so sure.
Their relationship goes through several ups and downs but I really enjoyed it. Loved the funny banter via text and in person, as well as their supportive friends and family.
Thanks to NetGalley for this book in exchange for my honest review. Watch for Things I Should Have Said to come out November 1, 2022!
We've all had those moments where you think of the best responses hours after the conversation because you've replayed every cringy minute in your head. No? Just me?
Skye is an introverted introvert who is having an existential crisis on a plane ride home, where she meets seat mate, Matt. To her surprise, he seems interested in her. He has to be a player, right? She is determined not to fall for his game or let him get too close. Solid plan, poorly executed.....
I loved, loved, loved this book. I felt every cringy moment Skye had. Her inner dialogue is brilliant and hilarious! I can't recommend this book enough!!
An introverted artist falls for an extroverted executive.... Skye just wants to make it an artist and avoid everyone... Matthew tempts her to reveal everything...
Love Matthew and Skye. The LOL moments overwhelms me. So many sassy and snarky dialogue too. Totally enjoyed it.
Thanks to the publisher for the arc.
